Grex Helpers Item 140: Grex System Problems - Spring 2005
Entered by i on Tue Mar 22 12:11:57 UTC 2005:

This item is for system problems. If something on Grex isn't working
right (line noise on a modem, weird behavior from a program, etc.),
this is the place to announce it. Except for security holes. If you
find a hole in system security, mail information about it to "staff".

457 responses total.

so like what's up with the huge help banner thing that greeted me. I was so
scared I had to whack the space-bar several times to wake myself up.

#2 of 457 by i on Tue Mar 22 20:08:16 2005:

Agora has a big welcome/help banner that only shows up the first time
you enter the conference. When the seasonal agora rolls, though, the
system probably isn't clever enough to check whether you're an existing
user (of the prior-season agora).

#3 of 457 by naftee on Tue Mar 22 21:24:26 2005:

Ahh, indeed.

#4 of 457 by gull on Wed Mar 23 00:18:43 2005:

Backtalk and fronttalk both hang when I try to enter the conference. I'm
posting this from Picospan, which does work.

#5 of 457 by gelinas on Wed Mar 23 01:27:30 2005:

FrontTalk is working for me.

#6 of 457 by daan on Wed Mar 23 10:40:54 2005:

The 'HELP' option from the 'menu' program does not work:
tail: /usr/local/lib/menus/dialogs/help_doc: No such file or directory

#7 of 457 by johnnie on Wed Mar 23 16:11:11 2005:

I'm finding it impossible to access agora via backtalk. No problems getting
inot other confs. Entering this via telnet, which seems fine...

#8 of 457 by gull on Wed Mar 23 16:44:18 2005:

Backtalk is working for me now. I think it was having problems with the
new conference, but once Picospan had me registered in it, everything
worked.

That was very entertaining. I especially liked the
"HTTP_KEEP_ALIVE=300" bit.

I was experiencing extreme Backtalk slowness in Agora a few minutes ago
(but not in other cf's), but it seems to have cleared up.

#11 of 457 by richard on Wed Mar 23 18:40:20 2005:

both yesterday and today I have been all but unable to get into agora via
backtalk. The other conferences come up right away, but agora doesn't seem
to come up at all

#12 of 457 by drew on Wed Mar 23 19:32:32 2005:

Since the move to Co-lo, there have been numerous CRC errors and such
during downloads via lsz through direct-dialed connections, that almost never
occurred before the move. I think the last time I downloaded with lsz was day
before yesterday.

#13 of 457 by richard on Wed Mar 23 22:55:06 2005:

re #11 agora seems to be coming up fine now

#14 of 457 by rksjr on Thu Mar 24 22:40:53 2005:

Grex Web Server Statistics at:

    http://www.cyberspace.org/stats/

is currently reporting for time ranges no later than:

    October 03-October 09 2004

Is it possible to access current data at some other URL?

#15 of 457 by aruba on Fri Mar 25 03:52:31 2005:

I suspect that whatever script that was, it doesn't work correctly on the
new operating system.

#16 of 457 by jep on Sat Mar 26 05:23:40 2005:

I haven't been able to access Backtalk from either home or work all week.
I still can't tonight.

#17 of 457 by slynne on Sat Mar 26 11:45:55 2005:

That is weird jep. I havent had any trouble with backtalk at all. I am
using it right now as a matter of fact.

#18 of 457 by juicy on Sat Mar 26 13:10:16 2005:

picospan quit randomly on me a moment ago
byte 1655 [Press space to continue, 'q' to quit.]zsh: terminated bbs
... but seems fine now (0805 est)

#19 of 457 by jep on Sat Mar 26 16:30:50 2005:

Last night when I posted resp:16, I was seeing a big delay upon
logon. I left the browser window open and used putty to connect
instead, and a few minutes after I complained, Backtalk came up and
was fine from then on. It's working fine now, too.

#20 of 457 by gull on Sat Mar 26 21:52:33 2005:

Re resp:19: For some reason, backtalk can't seem to handle initializing
this conference. If you visit this conference first in Picospan, it
works after that.

#21 of 457 by slynne on Sun Mar 27 00:47:11 2005:

I have never visited this conference in picospan and I havent had any
trouble

#22 of 457 by russ on Sun Mar 27 13:56:26 2005:

It appears to be time - if not past time - to block the IP addresses
used by a certain set of twits.

#23 of 457 by other on Sun Mar 27 16:01:18 2005:

Vanilla interface of Backtalk does not seem to respect user filter
options.

#24 of 457 by naftee on Sun Mar 27 16:10:04 2005:

someone should fix the vanilla interface on GreX :(

#25 of 457 by gelinas on Sun Mar 27 17:27:14 2005:

russ, been there, done that, got the t-shirt, don't need to do it again.

re 24 Whoa, I meant "m-net"

#27 of 457 by scholar on Tue Mar 29 00:09:12 2005:

I scribbled a few responses in coop. Each time I scribbled a response, BBS
segfaulted.

Could this possibly be a result of i's recent idiocy?

#28 of 457 by naftee on Tue Mar 29 01:34:43 2005:

backtalk seems to scribble fine.

#29 of 457 by i on Tue Mar 29 02:33:04 2005:

Hmmm...Picospan also dies with "Memory fault" for me; it doesn't seem to
matter if i'm a fw or not. (The scribble does take place. When i go
back to look at it, Picospan looks like it's having to fix up the sum
file, though.)

I wonder if this is an issue with our BSD port of PicoSpan. Any other
circumstances where you've noticed Picospan bombing?

#30 of 457 by scholar on Tue Mar 29 02:45:34 2005:

I noticed errors after you unilaterally deleted benign user comments in coop.

#31 of 457 by bru on Tue Mar 29 06:45:57 2005:

I tried to telnet in earlier andd all th ports were in use. That has not
happened in a while.

#38 of 457 by tod on Wed Mar 30 16:31:47 2005:

The difference is that I abhor GUI usage the way Unabomber abhors the
industrial revolution. To me, replacing picospan with a browser friendly
version would be like NPR producing some kind of Fear Factor reality segment.

#39 of 457 by rcurl on Wed Mar 30 17:02:25 2005:

I pefer picospan because it is a simple text interface. I prefer text e-mail
also, also for simplicity and speed. Here is my .sig file:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
NB. To prevent HTML code from being sent with e-mail, see instructions
at http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/nomime.html

I want to apply this to conferencing too.
