This Item is for describing "discoveries" made by helpers in the course of helping others. Such things are often just a little obscure, or non-obvious, or even particularly useful.

I was asked by a helpee for the phone number of M-Net. I don't have it written down, so I telnetted to M-Net, hoping to find the number in the welcome motd. It wasn't there, so I tried their menu "shell", to hunt for M-Net info. A little menu searching found a list of all the BBSs in the Ann Arbor area - and a place to get a lot of other information about Internet hosts, etc. So, back on Grex, I tried the same thing, and found that the M-Net and Grex menu shells are very similar, and the same BBS and other information is here too. Just follow the menu choices O, B and A to BBSs, and browse on other goodies along the way.

Thank you! Hmmm....first thing I did on M-Net was enter phones - or maybe, phone. I didn't notice which BBS list was more recent, though Grex showed a Sci Fi BBS, which M-Net didn't.
This suggestion/discovery didn't come about from dealing with a helpee, but I ran across it anyway. Since the "What book should I get?" question seems to pop up frequently from new users (and experienced users also have a need for book recommendations from time to time), let me suggest you helpers find a central place for the following file: /u/kentn/unix.books This is Samuel Ko's latest annotated Unix book list and is worth a look, I think. He lists not only books based on popularity, but also those recommended frequently on the net, and those he just plain likes. The list covers beginner's books through expert's books and topics related to Unix and the Internet. Have a look at the file and then grab it and put it somewhere if you think it's of value in your efforts. (It's about 54K long).
That sounds decent, I've only gotten that question a few times, but I'm always flummoxed by it. Come on, I didn't need any beginner's books, why should anyone else? >8)
I guess this is not *quite* what this item's about, but it's applicable:
Today I endeavored to read the helper cf (the whole thing, that is,)
and I've learned more about grex in the past hour than I have in my entire
year here. (And whoever handles the finances here will be seeing my
membership fee in the mail soon.... (= ) Great work, everybody!

I've installed a new command worth pointing newbie users at:
!forward
This is a little script for making, destroying and changing .forward files.
It is very wordy, and it does a trivial task, but enough users seem to have
trouble following simple directions like "do !pico .forward and type the
email address" that it seemed worth doing.
Very good idea. Thanks!
