Grex Helpers Item 130: Grex System Problems - Winter 2003/2004 [linked]
Entered by i on Wed Dec 24 02:24:24 UTC 2003:

This item is for system problems. If something on Grex isn't working
right (line noise on a modem, weird behavior from a program, etc.),
this is the place to announce it. Except for security holes. If you
find a hole in system security, mail information about it to "staff".

(the Pistachio interface for Backtalk appears to be "broken" in reading
the newest Agora in that, after selecting a series of items to read,
including new items, I find that trying to advance to the first new
item by using the "next item" button instead returns me to the very
first items, in order, likely never to reach the new items. this might
be because Backtalk has stuck "-1" where a different number should be.)

#5 of 384 by mynxcat on Wed Dec 24 18:28:30 2003:

Same here.

#6 of 384 by willcome on Wed Dec 24 18:43:22 2003:

Use Abalone.

#7 of 384 by bhoward on Fri Dec 26 04:24:33 2003:

I don't know whether this qualifies as a system problem, but I note
that the motd references item 80 in Agora for further information on
grex walks.

Can someone please update the motd once a grex walk item has been entered
in the Winter Agora?

#8 of 384 by remmers on Fri Dec 26 17:36:54 2003:

I updated the motd to reference OldAgora until someone gets around
to posting a walk item in the current Agora.

#9 of 384 by krj on Sat Dec 27 01:54:44 2003:

Usually I set the walk items, but winter Agora is always a problem because
I'm wrapped up with holiday stuff. I'll get it done for next weekend.

 /x is overflowing

#13 of 384 by janc on Thu Jan 1 16:29:42 2004:

/x does not matter.

#14 of 384 by naftee on Thu Jan 1 16:42:42 2004:

I'll take your word for it

#15 of 384 by cmcgee on Sat Jan 3 03:48:53 2004:

It seems to be taking an inordinate amount of time for email to get "sent".
I use pine, and once i "control x" to send it, I wait for maybe 10 - 15
seconds before it does anything.

It seems to me that it used to happen much faster.

#16 of 384 by keesan on Sat Jan 3 05:12:19 2004:

This has been happening for at least 3 days.

#17 of 384 by bhoward on Sat Jan 3 14:23:05 2004:

grex.org is not resolving from my japan based ip addresses
nor at least one isp in hawaii. is there a problem with
the dns server?

#18 of 384 by russ on Sat Jan 3 14:56:09 2004:

grex.org is not resolving from my Michigan ISP, either. I got here
using cyberspace.org.

#19 of 384 by keesan on Sat Jan 3 15:25:14 2004:

Mail is not being sent within at least 30 sec (I finally hit Ctrl-C) and I
have not received any mail, even spam, for the past 12 hours or so.
ssh from grex did not work for me this morning.

#20 of 384 by davel on Sat Jan 3 16:15:42 2004:

Earlier, when I tried to use lynx to access google.com, it sat for several
minutes. It then gave a message saying something about "my hostname", which
I think it gave as grex.cyberspace.org, not existing.

#21 of 384 by gull on Sat Jan 3 16:21:41 2004:

www.cyberspace.org is not resolving, and mail sending is failing from
Pine. When I try to send mail, it sits there for about a minute, then
exits with "Illegal instruction (core dumped)".

#22 of 384 by jor on Sat Jan 3 17:57:05 2004:

Just tested, incoming and outgoing email.
        Negative funtion.

#23 of 384 by davel on Sat Jan 3 19:19:56 2004:

I got that message again (out of the blue, while telnetted out from Grex, &
AFAICS manifesting no other problem except the message). Here's the exact
text:

My host name (grex.cyberspace.org) does not seem to exist!: Connection timed
out

#24 of 384 by naftee on Sat Jan 3 19:22:25 2004:

what up, grex.org don't work, but cyberspace.org does. Too much typing!

#25 of 384 by other on Sat Jan 3 19:41:48 2004:

grex.org DNS problem still unresolved.

#26 of 384 by drew on Sat Jan 3 20:08:48 2004:

grex.cyberspace.org also fails. cyberspace.org still works.

#27 of 384 by gelinas on Sat Jan 3 20:13:38 2004:

I've restarted named; we'll see if that helps.

#28 of 384 by janc on Sat Jan 3 20:34:33 2004:

I have the vague impression that one of the domain names is in the process
of being transfered. I wonder if that has anything to do with this.

#29 of 384 by gelinas on Sat Jan 3 20:55:36 2004:

I don't think it does, Jan.

I tried getting the domain files from grex.cyberspace.org and failed, which
makes it likely that puck.nether.net and dns.gibbard.org couldn't get them,
either. After restarting named, I succeeded in getting the domain files.
It looks like nether.net and gibbard.org have some of the records but not all.
I'm hoping they will soon try again to update from us.

#30 of 384 by jor on Sat Jan 3 21:34:00 2004:

        (funCtion, sheesh. Negative spelling.)

#31 of 384 by ea on Sat Jan 3 23:47:57 2004:

I seem to be able to get to grex.org, but not to cyberspace.org

#32 of 384 by gull on Sun Jan 4 00:59:34 2004:

Still not working.

#33 of 384 by bhoward on Sun Jan 4 01:23:02 2004:

cyberspace.org works from some places, grex.org from others. various
subdomains of either work depending on the server from which i'm testing.
looks like we are watching a wave of soa expirations.

#34 of 384 by gelinas on Sun Jan 4 01:31:18 2004:

I've sent a message to our secondaries, to ask that they jump-start the zone
transfers. It looks like one has, but the other hasn't yet.

#35 of 384 by russ on Sun Jan 4 03:07:47 2004:

grex.org is now working for me again. This appears to be progress.

#36 of 384 by twenex on Sun Jan 4 03:47:14 2004:

I wish I'd remembered about cyberspace.org. grex.org was inaccessible for
several hours from these parts, too.

#37 of 384 by aruba on Sun Jan 4 04:35:07 2004:

They're both working for me now. cyberspace.org was transferred from
Verisign to Dotster recently - the transfer was complete on (I believe)
December 31st.

#38 of 384 by sholmes on Sun Jan 4 07:58:58 2004:

I was not able to telnet to grex.org ( had to use the ip) but I was able to
browse www.grex.org. [yesterday]

#39 of 384 by keesan on Sun Jan 4 14:36:54 2004:

I have not received any mail including spam since some time Friday evening.
