Grex Health Item 58: Underwear dangers
Entered by bjorn on Sun Sep 6 18:44:56 UTC 1998:

Through hearsay of what my mom either heard on radio/tv or read somewhere,
I "learned" that tighty-whiteys (Men's brief underpants) are bad for men if
they want to have children and can promote prostate cancer. Any truth to
this?

I seem to recall reading that in Science News (except that it was
testicular cancer and the fertility effects were temporary), but a
quick glance at the recent indexes doesn't turn up the article.

I nremember hearing/reading about this some time ago. The reason that
briefs hold the scrotum closer to the body, this keeping the teste
warmer than boxer shorts do. Heat reduces the production of viable
sperm. It is, however a short-term reduction and when the testes are
allowed to be at a cooler temperature the vaibale sperm count returns to
"normal".

#2 is correct, although any prolonged environmental factor can cause the body
to adapt more permanently...(use it or lose it). ;-)

Don't know about any increase in testicular or prostate cancers with tight
shorts though.
