You could always get like a thigh master or something like that to do while
grexing.....

I think if you really looked hard you would find a form of exercise that you
enjoyed. Remember exercise doesnt have to be doing arobics, lifting weights,
or any other form of working out. Exercise can just be going for a walk,
maybe try rollerblading. For me I really enjoy running, I can go out and run
5 or 6 miles and have a good time while I am exercising....

Think about it!!!!!

i'm the type that is more liekly to excersice if there is somebody else ther

excersice...:)

How about this? Outfit an exercycle with a keyboard and a monitor. Pedal
away and grex while you are burning calories and building muscle tone. (Could
we sell this?)

#4 of 49 by eeyore on Wed Dec 27 05:32:33 1995:

it would make sense to me....i know that i'd excersice more if there was
a keyboard attached to a stairstepper...:)

#5 of 49 by zook on Wed Dec 27 13:58:19 1995:

Sweat and keyboards don't mix... :-) I ride an exercise bike and listen
to NPR's morning report 3X/wk. Food for the brain while I'm burning up
calories.

#6 of 49 by simcha on Wed Dec 27 14:57:07 1995:

I need to exercise to reduce my insulin levels while I'm pregnant. But, I
never have time, or I'm too tired, or in pain from backache.

Just excuses.

I am going to try to use the new gym at work...free equipment!

And the exercycle in my bedroom...

I'm just lazy & hate pain & discomfort.

Aerobics classes are pretty good for motivation and reducing boredom. If you
get into a school system (like Ann Arbor's Rec & Ed) you usually get in a
class with a bunch of other newbies, so no heavy "competition". Usually
people are happy to see other people working out, even if they aren't very
good yet.

I personally can get a bit sore from working out, but it's better than not
working out... I used to have some annoying problems/weaknesses that are now
gone.

#8 of 49 by headdoc on Thu Dec 28 20:30:06 1995:

Valerie, you expressed my sentiments to a "T". Those are all the reasons I
dont excersize. But I am giving some serious thought to changing my behavior
even though I feel the way you do.

#9 of 49 by rickyb on Thu Dec 28 23:09:04 1995:

Hook up your power to the exercize bike and you'll be motivated to keep going
so you don't lose your grex connection, heh ;)

(The first step in a good exercise program is to learn how to spell
"exercise".)

#14 of 49 by scott on Fri Dec 29 05:20:09 1995:

(The second step in a good exercise program is to learn to decipher other's
jokes [Grex-ercize]) :) :) :)

(#12 isn't what I was referring to.)

(scott apologizes)

#17 of 49 by otter on Sat Dec 30 00:55:24 1995:

Valerie, exercise does not have to mean "working out". The things you
mentioned about parking and stairs really do add up. Try a book on tape in
a portable player while walking or biking. How far do you live from the
Arboretum? Could you power-walk to the GrexWalk and use the stroll to cool
down?
Pain from exercise most often results from lack of proper warm-up/cool-down
and stretching.
Sounds to me like you might benefit from a yoga program (taught one-on-one
or in a small group) since part of the idea is to relax and quiet the mind.
Eeyore has a good point, too. Having an exersice "buddy" forces you to
schedule time for activity, and discourages the "ahhh...skip it" demon.

#18 of 49 by odakim on Sat Dec 30 01:19:19 1995:

you all are wonderful sooooo lets work out together..:) lift your arms rotate
them 10 times now fingers on key board..type...move those feet..flex up flex
down one two three again......move to the beat of the music.....thats it
your are doing great!!!!!!

#19 of 49 by birdlady on Sun Jan 21 06:25:35 1996:

Since I exercise after work, my huge excuse is, "But I'm tiiiiired". To keep
me motivated, I keep a countdown to when I see Jerod next and a picture of
my friend Amanda next to the TV downstairs (where I Firm). Always pick
something that's fun, too. I look forward to swimming and walking, so it
doesn't feel like exercise. Good luck Valerie!

#20 of 49 by odakim on Sat Feb 3 22:28:07 1996:

I have a serious question that I wrote last night but grex crashed during
the typing so don't know if it got in but it is important to me
I have been lifting weights about 50-over 60lbs 10-6-5 and curl 10lbs and some
arobic exercise..I am 43 years old..and my period has gone on for over two
weeks..not a heavy flow nor a light flow and medium size clots...
I had gotten some used weight equipment recently and i noticed when i lifted
with my legs laying on my back I lifted 176lbs pushing against the bar..and
I felt a heavy clot pass...is it the weight lifting? or age? The doctor had
found my uterus enlargedsome time back and I was checked for pregnancy and
had an ultrsound.all negative...any idea?...thanks

#21 of 49 by beeswing on Tue Feb 6 23:42:32 1996:

Hmm. I have terrible ankle problems, so running and aerobics are out of the
question for me. I prefer exercise wher eI don't realize I'm exercising!
I like swimming ok but the pool at my university is far for me to drive, and
I will lose access to it in May when I garduate. Any suggestions?

#22 of 49 by scott on Wed Feb 7 12:14:45 1996:

Check out local community stuff, like in the public schools.

#23 of 49 by rickyb on Thu Feb 8 23:31:34 1996:

You could also work on strengthening your ankles so you can do aerobic
walking, low impact workouts, etc. Biking is also pretty easy on the ankles,
relatively.

#24 of 49 by eeyore on Mon Feb 12 01:11:35 1996:

odakim: i'd talk to your doctor again...it may just be the excersice, or even
nothing at all....i know that i have the strangest periods, and i've just
gotten used to it....were you already using the weights when your period
started?

#25 of 49 by redfox on Mon Feb 12 20:11:58 1996:

odakim, irregular and long term periods are usually caused by hormonal
imbalance. Most of the time, it is nothing to worry about, and will fix
itself within time. If you feel any pain, or the periods continue that way,
see your doctor! As far as the weight lifting causing the heavier flow, using
the muscles in the abdomen can cause the flow to increase while excersizing
and will usually go back to normal within a couple of hours.
Remember, though, when in doubt or if you are concerned, see your doctor, or
at least give him/her a call.

#26 of 49 by odakim on Tue Feb 13 18:06:47 1996:

it finally quit. But I willl see my doctor again and ask him and when I found
out Iwill pass it on..thanks for answering I was getting concerned.

#27 of 49 by beeswing on Thu Feb 22 05:29:33 1996:

I can't really strengthen my ankles... what is happening is the ligaments and
tendons are deteriorationg due to disease (Charcot-Marie-Tooth's). This has
no obvious symptoms, except for my feet turning inwards slightly. I can wear
ankle braces tho. Biking is ok except there are little places to bike where
I am. Well... I could but I'd get run over. I have heard the Firm aerobic
tapes are killer... do they have a lot of jumping around?

#28 of 49 by scott on Thu Feb 22 12:09:18 1996:

Aerobics are a lot better than running when it comes to impact... I did
running for a while a few times, but always had to give up after knee
problems. Ankles probably work out the same. I'm not directly familiar with
the Firm tapes, but with all that weight lifting they probably don't do a lot
of bouncing. You can also make up your own versions of various routines that
cause trouble.

#29 of 49 by beeswing on Thu Feb 22 15:38:54 1996:

No running for me. Aside from the unhealthy pounding on the ankles, it bores
me and makes my lungs hurt (I'm asthmatic also). I like weight lifting tho.
Does that burn fat?

#30 of 49 by scott on Thu Feb 22 17:04:28 1996:

Yeah, muscles burn fat. Weight training is the current trend in losing
weight.

#31 of 49 by remmers on Thu Feb 22 20:43:27 1996:

Right, but it should be combined with some form of aerobic exercise.

#32 of 49 by headdoc on Sun Feb 25 00:41:01 1996:

That's what I hear, too John. A trainer I know advocates a minimum of 30
minutes of aerobic workout and then you start your weights.

#33 of 49 by scott on Sun Feb 25 03:40:06 1996:

Right, mixing the two is the best. What I'm doing this season, incidentally.

#34 of 49 by odakim on Sun Feb 25 18:26:42 1996:

That is true... I need to warm up with arobics before lift weights because
what is happening is I am building muscle bu much of the fat is still there
only pushed aside from the inside building of muscle. I lose more weight too
if I combine arobics.
I turn on richard simmoms swearting tothe oldies 3 I like that one the best.
it makes my heart work out and every area of the body is stretched and warmed
and then I lift weights.

#35 of 49 by beeswing on Sun Feb 25 18:28:21 1996:

How are those Simmons tapes? I loathe covers of oldies tunes, but I need a
tape I can stick to. I kinda like Richard but at the same time he just scares
me.

#36 of 49 by bubu on Mon Feb 26 21:20:17 1996:

Richard Simmons Sweatin to the Oldies is awesome...not to mention you get some
great music...

#37 of 49 by beeswing on Mon Feb 26 21:38:54 1996:

Covers of songs as old as my parents? Ptooey!

#38 of 49 by bubu on Wed Feb 28 22:57:18 1996:

Hey now young lady....Some of those songs were released during my
lifetime...Be careful or I may take offense to that..

#39 of 49 by odakim on Thu Feb 29 04:32:45 1996:

He really works you out good. they are easy to follow too.
Ok now I heard something I need to check out with someone.
I was told that I should lift weights first and then do arobics for optimum
fat burning and toning. that lifting weights pumps the muscles and arobics
afterwards burn fat not used as fuel by the muscles during a workout.
What do you think?
See so far I am getting stronger.. I am using a pulley and pulling down 125lbs
for reps of 8-8-7 on average. my biceps are building and I can see it rise
on my arm along with my anterior deltoid and my triceps which can be felt as
I smooth my hand down my arm. However my arm still has flab and fat on it.
Also I am measureing myself and my bicep flexed went down 2" and my bust
measurement went up 2" the rest stayed the same sop far. I believe the bust
is due to my pecs. my goal is lean, strong, and fit not amazonian.
Andy help or suggestions?
