Has anyone bought from DAMARK, "The Great [phone order] Deal Company"?
[They carry home and office electronics and misc.] They have a category
called "Factory serviced", which translates to products that have "been
returned to the manufacturer, inspected and serviced by the manufacturer
or an authorized service center, tested, repackaged and sold to DAMARK.
Most factory serviced merchandise is warranted by either the original
manufacturer or by the servicing contractor." [Its amazing how many things
have been "factory serviced" - from "programmable bread bakery", to "Canon
Business Copier".]

Has anyone had experience with DAMARK - and the terms and conditions
of "factory serviced" merchandise? Are they BARGAINS, or bargains???.

Damark is a good source for the *perceptive* buyer. Some of their
stuff is a GoodDeal (tm) and some of it, just isn't. If you see
something appetizing, disassemble the PR-text carefully.

Then assemble a list of questions and call them.

Using that model I've bought some stuff, and not bought other things.

What I've bought has been JustFine (tm). There was a single
incident of "id-don't-work" which was resolved in record time.

The factory refurbished stuff is also a good deal. Sometimes
you can find a better deal from elsewhere, but you need to be
plugged in to find it.

Most of the time these are "bargins," sometimes though, "BARGINS."

#3 of 33 by tnt on Fri Oct 28 18:04:19 1994:

Is bargins/BARGINS the 'white-trash' spelling of 'bargains?'

#4 of 33 by brighn on Fri Oct 28 18:48:19 1994:

I've never had a problem with Damark, but there are plenty of items
that are the same price as in stores for lower quality.
The same's true for Sam's Club, too. So be careful out there,
and know what the thing you're buying usually seels for.

#5 of 33 by tsty on Sun Oct 30 13:21:11 1994:

Of course, tnt, had to make sure you could understand it ...<g>.

I am linking this item to hardware. Keep those BARGAINS (bargains?????)
coming!

WAIT! 78 might be the BARGAIN you've been looking for!

#10 of 33 by kdc on Sat Dec 10 13:38:21 1994:

#11 of 33 by rcurl on Sat Dec 10 19:27:21 1994:

From Damark? Not in current catalog.

#14 of 33 by omni on Sun Dec 11 19:54:03 1994:

what do they get for 1MB simms that run at 120ns? Best price I could
find was 49.95 per chip.

#15 of 33 by rogue on Sun Dec 11 22:06:54 1994:

$49.95 for 1MB 120ns SIMMs? Wow.

Call CCS, Inc. at 747-8440.

#16 of 33 by srw on Mon Dec 12 01:45:35 1994:

My guess is that you can get an 8-chip 1MB SIMM from the Chip Merchant for
under $35. Call 1-800-426-6375. They may have an even better deal on
used memory. Used memory is a good option if it comes guaranteed to work,
because the age of memory chips does not contribute to their failure rate.
(unlike things with moving parts)

#17 of 33 by omni on Mon Dec 12 05:47:35 1994:

Re 15- I will in a few days.

re 16- These are the 30 pin Simms. Are we talking about the same thing
Steve?

#18 of 33 by srw on Mon Dec 12 07:29:26 1994:

Yup. The ones you need have 8 1Mebabit chips in a row, making a megabyte.
They have 30 pins, and I've seen them advertised new for $35. You'll
need two to replace your 2 256K simms, which will then be suitable for
bookmarks or coffee stirrers.

#19 of 33 by n8nxf on Mon Dec 12 13:07:04 1994:

Jim, for your computer, all you need is 2 more 1M SIMMs to bring it up to
4M. Chip Merchant is a good place to go for memory. Call them @ (619)
654-2700, ext. 7 is you want used. They won't sell used if you call the
regular (800) 426-6375 ext. 3 number. (I've tried.)

#20 of 33 by rcurl on Mon Dec 12 15:08:29 1994:

Do you know if CM has Powerbook (145) upgrade simms (+4M is $169 @MacW)?

#21 of 33 by n8nxf on Mon Dec 12 19:34:09 1994:

Yep. Sez in their add: PB 145, 6M, $175
I don't know how they advertise PB memory. I have a PB 160 with 4M. If
I want to upgrade to 10 do I get 6M more or do I have to buy a 10M module?

#22 of 33 by rcurl on Mon Dec 12 22:31:51 1994:

For the PB 160 you buy 6M to add to your 4M. I seem to have misread the
MacW pricefor the 145B: CM's price is best so far. (I asked UM computer
sales, and got different answers from everyone on whether one removes or
does not remove 2M from the PB 145B to add 6M, to get 8M. Their price is
also much higher than CM.) Decisions, decisions....

#23 of 33 by peacefrg on Tue Dec 13 02:00:18 1994:

Cool, I'm thinking about buying a Mac. Thanks guys

#24 of 33 by rcurl on Thu Jan 19 21:30:59 1995:

re #22: now everyone says the 145B has 4M soldered in, so one needs 4M
as a plug in to go to 8. MacExtra has it for $94/4M, better than CM (but
they had only the used chip). Decision made.

#25 of 33 by nephi on Fri Jan 20 04:39:44 1995:

If something is soldered in, can't it just be soldered right back out?

I've done it before with other things.

#26 of 33 by rcurl on Fri Jan 20 06:26:07 1995:

Probably, but no need. That's the first 4M; the second is a SIMM.

#27 of 33 by rcurl on Sat Jan 21 07:28:12 1995:

4M *board* (not SIMM) for PB 145B just arrived. "Made in USA", no
less. Who are CUbig Ent Inc? Anyway, now we see if I have a BARGAIN
or a bargain???.

#28 of 33 by n8nxf on Mon Jan 23 13:03:11 1995:

Let me know how it goes. I'm contemplating another 4 for our PB 160.

#29 of 33 by mlstraub on Thu Feb 2 18:06:30 1995:

Anyone know who has the best deal on a 1 Gig (or slightly bigger) hard
drive? I heard of a 1Gb Western Digital for $400 somewhere locally.
Damark has a 1.26 Maxtor for $500, with free shipping. I bought a
couple of small items from Damark a few years ago with good success, but no
expensive items. Damark also has a "Maxtech" 14.4 fax/data modem w/voice
mail for $80. I don't know anything about Maxtech, any suggestions?

You may have more success in reaching a larger audience if you repost this in
the Winter Agora conference. You are currently in the Fall Agora, and only
a few stragglers will se your response here.

#31 of 33 by rcurl on Mon Feb 6 16:07:07 1995:

???? I am in Winter Agora now, and am reading this item "here". (Linking
does get a little confusing, because you can't tell from what to what
from <linked item>. This item appears to be linked from oldagora to
agora...(did I do that??).

#32 of 33 by gregc on Mon Feb 6 22:01:28 1995:

Um, Rane, no you're not. This item is in Fall agora and the hardware
conference. You must have been in one of those 2 when you posted that
last response.

#33 of 33 by rcurl on Mon Feb 6 22:33:14 1995:

You're right! I am in hardware (what was Willy Loman in?). So, we need
a agora fw to link it there. I guess it doesn't have to be split yet.
Maybe the thing to do is start it in the next agora, and then link it
here.
