I'm having some problems with my 286-12 w/ a MFM half-height 40 meg drive... Wh en I went to the computer show at WCC last month, I bought a HUGE box of full h eight drives... there were 8 drives in this box, and I've singled out the 4 tha t probably work...the 40 meg half height drive works and is in my computer righ t now... My dillema is, trying to get a 2nd hard drive to work in my system... The drive that's in right now as drive 0, and wired w/ a 2 drive MFM cable. Is a Seagate ST-251-1. I'd like to get one of the other disks to work as drive 1 somehow...I have another seagate (ST-4051), but it may not work... there are many jumpers missing. If anyone knows how to set this drive up (jumpers) as drive 1 (it is a 40 meg) please leave me a message... I also have an Otari Electronics Model C-526 (20 meg by using the drive parms I found from a list... If anyone knows the jumper settings to set this drive as drive 1(slave) and how to setup a Seagate ST-251-1 as master to it, let me know... Also I have a 29 meg Compaq drive... I have booted off of it, but don't know how to set it up in a 2 drive config. as the slave. Finally my best hope, lies in n IBM 30 meg drive that I was using for 2 days before I tried the 40 meg... If anyone knows how to setup any of these drives as drive 1 with a seagate st-251 as drive 0, let me know....

If you have the usual IBM AT ST-506 style cabling, you just need to configure the drive as 0. The "A" cable has some of the strands twisted so that the drive select lines are presented differently to each drive connector. There is no such thing as a "master slave" relationship between the drives. So far as the active logic is concerned, all drives are equivalent. There is only one bit of passive logic to worry about - the last drive on the "A" cable needs to have a terminator. Sometimes people get chintzy on this.
