Grex Hardware Item 5: Sun 2 hardware for sale. LONG!
Entered by mcnally on Sun Aug 4 06:31:47 UTC 1991:

A friend of mine forwarded this message to me from misc.forsale.computers
because I have a Sun 2 at home. It occurred to me that some people here
might be interested in it, too, especially the extra memory cards, which
might do Grex some real good. I don't know if this system has a floating
point co-processor but that might be desirable, too. In any case, there
are lots of goodies offered.

I have no relationship with or connection to the person who posted the
message. Any questions, therefore, would best be addressed to him
(cornhead@sutro.sfsu.edu).

I've horded lots of boards over the years, can't imagine I'll need them
all. I could probably build a system or two but am strangely unmotivated,
contact me if you're interested in getting everything you need "ready to
assemble." I guarantee the boards and control quality carefully, contact
me for details.

Sun 2's are a lot of fun, do all the things that made Suns enviable.

1 meg "Prime" ram boards $35 ea.

SMD 2180 SMD drive controller, these have limitations. In general they
are not useful for drives of more than 80 megs capacity. $35.

3com E-net boards. Cheap. Contact me.

IE "Sun/Intel" Ethernet card, also works in Sun 3 if you find the VME
adaptor. I have been meaning to stick a few of these in Sun 3's to see
if they are any faster than the on-board ethernet interfaces. As these
cards have 256K of ram on board I would imagine so. $90.

Xylogics 450 SMD controllers, these too can be used in Sun 3's with
adaptors. This and an SMD drive speeds things up considerably. $90.

Xylogics 451 ESMD controller. Also adaptable. $140.

There appears to be some misconceptions surrounding 450's and 451's. The
451 deos not supersede or obselete the 450, but is made for the generally
higher tranfer rate of ESMD drives.

SCSI host adaptor boards. Cannot be used in 3's. Each also has four serial
ports. Handy boards. $90

SCSI board with one bad serial port: copies data going out of another port.
Deos not affect performance of system. $75

SKY FFP floating point accelerator board. Increases math performance 4X+
I won't live without one in my Sun 2. $75

AR 1/4 inch cartridge tape controller board. Will control a QIC-02 tape
drive, such as an Archive with a QIC-02 bottom board. Cut out the SCSI
middle man and save save save! $40

Sun 2 1152*900 hi-res mono cards. KB and Mouse attach here too. $60.

Sun 2 Prime CPU boards, $75.

I think that about covers the boards I am familiar with. There are some
others like serial multiplexers I will test out if you are interested.

I also have tape drives, extrnl and int., SCSI or not, hard drives, card-cages,
you name it. Thinnet-hackable e-net transceivers $35 each. I have friends
with stuff too, including Sun 3 stuff. If you don't see what you need let me
know and I'll put the word out. Keyboards, mice......

I might be flexible on some of the prices, generally if you buy a few boards
or if I've got a bunch.

Send e-mail to me as cornhead@sutro.sfsu.edu if you're interested. Thanks.

Anyone wanna buy some stuff and donate it? :)

Well, it sure looks like I'm going to be in the market for a 450 "real soon".
As long as I'm at it, may as well try for enet xcvrs. Grex may want
to check into 450's as well, & also see what the story is regarding
the serial multiplexors.

This could definitely be worth-while.

You might have to fight STeve for the 450s.

Actually, I think it's more a matter of "the same desire" -- we blew
up my 450 in the process of trying to get a 2nd 450 going for grex.

Sounds like a bummer. At least it looks like you can get another.
