Grex Grexohio Item 41: Yet another Grexpedition [linked] [frozen]
Entered by carson on Mon Jul 1 13:55:59 UTC 1996:

Here's the scoop:

At some point in late July, I'm meeting nephi in southern Illinois,
whereupon we will embark on a Grexpedition like none before it. That's
right, we will begin...

Grex Northeast '96!

...and our first stop will be southern Ohio, near Cincinnati, where we
will come into contact with long-time Jack Martin, formerly of the login
jemart! I haven't seen him in nearly two years, so it should be quite the
reunion.

Following that visit, we'll head east for the beautiful city of Columbus,
OH! There I hope to see more people from the Grexohio contingent than I
can count, including:

box! cherokee! cinder! cyrax! decaff! dynamo! espresso! freedom! frosh!
hematite! icepro! ldiot8oy! liberty! mulder! porky! rizzor! rlawson!
schmoo! sidekick! zepfox! zim!

(jbrennan may drop in from Findlay, which is easier to spell than
Sch-en-a-ct-a-dy, or pAtAskAlA, for that matter.)

It's hard to say at this time whether we will survive the sheer number of
people encountered at this stop. Assuming we do, it's off east to see the
one and only, the infamous AVI! That will happen near Pittsburgh, PA.

After a night of sheer terror and mayhem, we head mostly east, but a
little south, to the area of Washington, DC! Near our nation's capital, we
hope to encounter such Grexers as alfee, signet, simcha, stern, and yup!
(Details are still being sketched for this one; some of the Grexers
mentioned may not be available.)

When we've had our fill of hobnobbing and elbow-brushing there, it's off
to the state of Delaware! This is pribly the stop that will interest you
least: we're meeting up with nephi's family, and NONE OF THEM ARE
GREXERS! Oh, the shame! the embarrassment! Just don't tell Mike I told
you, eh? ;)

Rumor has it that lestat can be found lurking in Delaware as well. Who knows?

At some point after Delaware, we're headed to Allentown, PA, where we'll
drop in on Mickey, better known as all. There's been a rumor that the
Most Honorable fuz will lead an entourage through eastern Pennsylvania at
that time. Hopefully, I'll know more later.

More details to follow... we're almost there!

in theory, I'd like to meet as many Grexers as possible. we'll be headed
from Delly to New England, BOston, in fact.

I'd also like to squeeze in a sidetrip to frieda's, likely near the
"DC" date. nephi's looking forward to it, too, but I'm sure he can
type for himself. =)

#2 of 95 by sunilm on Mon Jul 1 14:20:21 1996:

#3 of 95 by dadroc on Mon Jul 1 14:40:16 1996:

I nominate you the offical Grex wandering spirit. Looks like a fun adventure.

#4 of 95 by tpryan on Tue Jul 2 22:39:14 1996:

Any date for a stop at King's Island theme park near Cincinatti?

#5 of 95 by remmers on Thu Jul 4 11:42:41 1996:

Will this tip the balance in the Great Grexoff?

#6 of 95 by carson on Thu Jul 4 23:15:41 1996:

heh.

#7 of 95 by rlawson on Fri Jul 5 02:58:42 1996:

This item has been linked from genx 76 to ohio 41.

#8 of 95 by srw on Fri Jul 5 08:12:33 1996:

If you go to boston, lookup jweiss@mit.edu.

Too bad you aren't waiting until school starts, as there will be another weiss
in Bethlehem PA (U know who) which is practically Allentown,. . anyway.

#9 of 95 by cinder on Fri Jul 5 12:01:39 1996:

Ah Carson, Pataskala may be harder to spell than Finlay, but you're too good
at it =)

#10 of 95 by kain on Fri Jul 5 16:28:53 1996:

#11 of 95 by carson on Fri Jul 5 19:29:43 1996:

re #9: "findlay." =)

depending on how the trip goes, I might try to talk Mike into going to
Gaylord before coming back to A2.

#12 of 95 by birdlady on Fri Jul 5 21:07:39 1996:

Carson...I love you. =)

#13 of 95 by carson on Sat Jul 6 00:43:29 1996:

Hey now, take it outside.

#15 of 95 by cinder on Sat Jul 6 01:08:37 1996:

I take back what I said, Pataskala is easier to spell than FinDley =)

#16 of 95 by omni on Sat Jul 6 03:06:44 1996:

Yeah, but I bet it's a little more fun on Sunday night. I've been to Findlay,
I know.

 Can you spell b-o-r-i-n-g ?

I knew you could!

freida is looking forward to the visit!

#20 of 95 by carson on Sun Jul 7 08:02:42 1996:

I'm looking forward to having it over and done with. thinking about how to
put it all together gives me headaches. =)

I know that we'll be in Columbus on July 27 (Sat), and maybe the day
before. We're meeting people near DC on the 28th, although I don't
know where yet. From DC, we'll hit Hinton, Allentown, Dellywhere, Boston,
maybe Albany, and maybe someplace in New Hampshire (I think).

Somehow, we'll make it to Gaylord by August 3 and A2 by August 4. I hope.

#21 of 95 by omni on Sun Jul 7 15:19:04 1996:

Don't forget about my pictures, carson and nephi ;)

#22 of 95 by frosh on Sun Jul 7 16:22:21 1996:

Um.,...if we ever do something....mail me info....because this is getting
nowhere...

#23 of 95 by popcorn on Sun Jul 7 21:08:09 1996:

Re 18: Nope, I'm not planning any big trips to meet Grexers. But actually
the Grexoff contest ended a week ago.

#24 of 95 by sidekick on Mon Jul 8 01:17:02 1996:

Who won?

#25 of 95 by carson on Mon Jul 8 11:57:41 1996:

Grex did. =)

#26 of 95 by remmers on Mon Jul 8 12:27:55 1996:

Right, less of our bandwidth cluttered up with "metoo" and "ixnay".

Seriously, I thought the Great Grexoff was one of the more
entertaining and memorable Grex events. Something to tell your
grandchildren about.

#27 of 95 by kerouac on Mon Jul 8 15:26:16 1996:

popcorn won as predicted...I had been thinking she should get the grexbat
as the winner's trophy, but it was auctioned off to aruba before the contest
ended

#28 of 95 by freida on Mon Jul 8 22:05:47 1996:

What was the final tally?

#29 of 95 by carson on Wed Jul 10 00:02:10 1996:

we'll know tomorrow morning. =)

I'm thinking of restructuring this trip to take us through one-third
of the continental USA plus Canada, but I have to clear it with nephi
first.

#30 of 95 by birdlady on Fri Jul 12 17:40:53 1996:

Darnit -- I was up to 140 grexers...

#31 of 95 by freedom on Sat Jul 13 19:30:28 1996:

hmmm....I don't know if I'll be able to see you or not carson..I might be at
a crew game with my brotehr..hmm..waaah!

#32 of 95 by doll on Sun Jul 14 12:42:05 1996:

why did you end the contest?

#33 of 95 by popcorn on Mon Jul 15 17:35:43 1996:

Because it could have gone on forever, and we were getting tired of it.
(If you added up all the unique people named by the contestants in the
contest, we had named about 1% of everybody on Grex. And more people get
accounts on Grex every day.) It was a fun contest, but we were tired.

#34 of 95 by aruba on Tue Jul 16 05:22:20 1996:

I posted the final scores in the System Announcements item. There were a
total of 586 acquintances named.

#35 of 95 by carson on Wed Jul 17 13:30:43 1996:

imagine if you will, two people engaged in the time-honored competition
of drinking the other under the table. they've been sitting at that
table, nearly six months now, each taking a drink and watching the
other take a drink. they have each had more to drink than anyone else
would have thought possible, yet they continue to find the ability to
imbibe yet another drink. the others watch, amazed at the stamina of
the two contestants. their eyes are bloodshot. they quiver with each
raised arm. obviously at wit's end, neither wishes to give in, at least
while the other one is watching.

then suddenly, one of them keels over.

---

anyway, back to the trip, which I suppose I'll have to call "Grex Eastern
Seaboard Tour '96!," what with the added stops. still waiting to hear
from Mike, but hopefully I'll be able to let all the parties involved
know when and where we'll be.

I'm pretty sure the "gauntlet" drive will be the one from Boston to
Gaylord. Looking at my Rand McNally Road Atlas, I've estimated it to be a
900 mi, 18 hr trip. I suspect we'll spend a night with the Canucks. =)

#36 of 95 by birdlady on Wed Jul 17 18:11:22 1996:

You *are* cutting through Canada, I presume? If you go the long way, I'll
have to beat you. BTW -- oh never mind. I'll send you mail. =)

#37 of 95 by popcorn on Thu Jul 18 02:45:33 1996:

Re 35: Hm. I'd say a better analogy than "then suddenly, one of them keels
over" would be "then suddenly, they two of them look at each other and say,
'This is getting tiresome', shake hands, and amicably stumble away."

#38 of 95 by srw on Thu Jul 18 07:40:07 1996:

The year Jonathon started college (1989. egads) we picked up Jeremy at band
Camp in Interlochen and drove straight through (via Bluewater, Niagara)
to Boston. It only took 17 hours, and I don't speed too much. So I think
you can do Gaylord from Boston in a mere 17 hours, too.

(That was a trip to be remembered, by all except Jeremy, who was so exhausted
as a ninth grader at Pioneer Band Camp, that he slept the whole way).
We drove through the night (3 drivers) and Jeremy was the only one who arrived
in Boston with a sane biological clock setting. (but I digress)

#39 of 95 by carson on Thu Jul 18 12:51:26 1996:

re #36: yep. I'm planning on taking Mike to a strip joint and getting him
really trashed or something. =) seriously, we're going through Canada
Mike's never been there before, and he's looking forward to it.
whether we make it straight through is another matter. =)

re #37: that's SO Hollywood. ;)

re #38: I'm hoping we can make it in a wee less time (say, 16 hours); my
estimations using Rand McNally have an unfortunate habit of being
dead on, by predicting any sort of mishap that might occur. =(

here's hoping Illini raccoons haven't taken their alien-altered
        DNA to Canada. =)
