Grex Grexohio Item 23: Omni's odyssey through Ohio ;) [linked]
Entered by omni on Fri Dec 29 00:00:33 UTC 1995:

Ok, So I am *definitly* going to see Frieda soon, as in I am planning on
leaving Tuesday at 9am, arriving in Beckley WV at 1225 AM. Since I will
havea 2 hour layover in Cleveland, where Greyhound expects me to eat
dinner. So the point of this item is to gather suggestion of what I could do
for 2 hours in Cleveland and to find out if there are any decent restaurants
near the bus station. I expect to be in Cleveland from 2:30 to 4:30pm.
Also, if there are any Toledo/Cleveland/Akron/Canton OH grex types that
want to meet me, I'll be in Toledo around 12:25pm, Cleveland 2:30 to 4:30pm
Akron 5:35pm and Canton at 6:15 pm. I'll also be in Charleston for 30 minutes
starting at 10:45pm to 11:15pm. This will be on the 2nd, unless otherwise
noted, your mileage may vary, no refunds in the state of Indiana et al.

Take a tour of Jacoub's Field. Just explore the place. What a slice o'heaven
it is.

Get your 2M rig out and call for Howard the Duck.

Which repeater, STeve? Yes I am taking it.

#5 of 50 by zook on Sat Dec 30 16:41:05 1995:

I was in Cleveland's Greyhound station one time many years ago. Unless
things have changed, you will probably want to brown bag your lunch and
stay put.

You aren't familar with Howard? Uh-oh.

(I am.)

(I didn't even have to suffer through the movie. Just the comic adaptation.)

;)

#9 of 50 by omni on Tue Jan 2 00:56:31 1996:

On second thought, I am not taking the radio. It's the technology thing.
The whole point of this trip is to forget that I am a ham, and have 2
computers and an account on Grex. I am taking my new camera, and should have
lots of pictures to document my trip with. I want to capture a sunrise, and
a sunset; Mountains and the people that live on them; birds and nature in
general.

Please use the rest of this item to plan a potluck. We MUST see these
pictures.

#10 of 50 by steve on Tue Jan 2 03:25:32 1996:

Take your radio. You never know when you're going to need it. You
might not want to take it out of your backpack, but take it along in
case you need it.

The Howard the Duck comic is the original: the movie was a sick
spin off.

#11 of 50 by freida on Tue Jan 2 06:09:57 1996:

Hey omni...I can give you a sunrise and a sunset...over the New river if you
like...I can show you people and places...I can give you the space to find
the animals if you are early enough and quiet enough...but I do have a
computer in the house...It can be off limits to you if you like though? Bring
the radio...steve is right...it never hurts and you never know when you might
need it to drown out other less desirable noises...see you soon!

#12 of 50 by carson on Tue Jan 2 18:56:40 1996:

(STeve's right about Howard the Duck too.)

*sigh* I just this moment made plans to see Thornetta Davis perform that
night.

#15 of 50 by bentley on Tue Jan 2 23:13:15 1996:

Do take the radio. One St. Patrick's Day, stranded on ahighway outside
Baltimore, police wars whizzing past and ignoring us... the only reason we're
not still there is because one of the cars in the convoy had a ham radio, and
we radioed the local AAA. (They wouldn't help, though, 'cause our AAA card
was brand new, and not on their computer. Fortunately, our ham radio guy in
the car knew the guy at AAA headquarters in Detroit, and called him. half an
hour later, we had a tow truck. Heh.)

I can't do January 27, since I'll be out of town that weekend, but I could
volunteer to host it some other weekend.

#17 of 50 by carson on Wed Jan 3 02:22:42 1996:

(I'll ask and see if I can host it.)

#18 of 50 by scg on Wed Jan 3 06:01:41 1996:

Oh no, competing potluck hosts?

#19 of 50 by scg on Wed Jan 3 07:22:40 1996:

Ok, I've thought about it and decided that I can host this potluck. How would
February 3 work for people? I could also do January 20, if omni is going to
be back that soon.

#20 of 50 by carson on Wed Jan 3 12:46:11 1996:

(I was volunteering for the 27th, but I can't do it.) :(

Gee, I sure wish I could be a fly on the wall to see everyone's reactions to
my farm!

#24 of 50 by scg on Thu Jan 4 07:10:45 1996:

Well, if it's possible to go from here to your place, it should be possible
to go the other way.

#25 of 50 by steve on Thu Jan 4 22:16:37 1996:

How big is your farm, Freida?

#26 of 50 by omni on Fri Jan 5 05:08:38 1996:

It's not small, from what I've seen of it. Freida says that she has 64 acres
of land. The 3rd is really good for me since it will take just a little time
to get all the pictures back and all that. I am also going to call her from
the pot luck so that each one who attends can hear her voice, as well as see
her via a picture. I'm also going to take a picture of of all the attendees
so I can show her ywhat you all look like. Hows that?
Beckley is a cool little town that's about the size of Ann Arbor, but
without all the shops and quaint little restaurants. Of course you cannot buy
coal by the bucket in Ann Arbor for $1.50. I did the other day. It's really
funny because some people here still use coa for heat, and buy it by the
pickup truck full here. The coal store has a scale, and an end loader.
Were going to church on Sunday in Hinton, and we are going to Cass, where
John Henry is buried. I'll bring you pictures. The weatherman here is calling
for 3-5 inches of snow this weekend, which could close her road. And that is
a good thing. There is a drop of several hundred feet on the side of her road.
It's only one lane, and the limit is how fast you think it should be, but it's
never over 15, and even that can be scary. The views here are awesome. There
is one freeway overpass that is angled backward, so thgat the front appears
to be taller than the backside of it. I'll try to get a picture of that
one. What impressed me was the tall bridge supports that carry I-64 over the
little town of Beaver WV. I have so much to share,it's not funny.

#27 of 50 by freida on Fri Jan 5 18:52:50 1996:

Well the farm is 64+ acres, most of it on a "bench" along the side of the
mountain, but some if it is vertical. We have an old majestic wood and coal
cook stove in the kitchen which we use to cook on and provide heat for that
portion of the house. Omni is a little awed by the primitiveness of the farm
and the road. He didn't really believe me when I said that you needed 4-wheel
drive to get to my house. I also showed him a picture of my old house, which
is 2500 sq.ft. on a 1/3 acre lot, so he is trying to figure out why I chose
to live here in less than 1500 sq.ft. of living space. I think he likes the
feather bed though...

Do you have kids, Freida? It sounds like a wonderful place to raise
them, at least in terms of the physical surroundings.

#29 of 50 by bubu on Sat Jan 6 15:18:30 1996:

RE: 26......I have been over that bridge on I-64 Omni....It is quite
impressive....

#30 of 50 by freida on Sun Jan 7 07:56:40 1996:

Yes, steve, I have 3 children and 4 grandchildren...The two that are still
living at home are Ben (11) and Elanor Arwen (13). Elanor was none to
thrilled with the move, bet seems to be adjusting well and making friends.
Ben was tickled from the start that we were going to be living on a farm.
They were beginning to become greedy and disrespectful in our old location...I
am hoping that the change to country life and being around (sorry to say) more
moral people will help me to change their outlook. I raised my two oldest
grandchildren until this past july...sorry they could not move here with
me...they wanted to.

#31 of 50 by evil1 on Sun Jan 14 19:58:25 1996:

Is'nt it strange that the people that want to move with you can't? I've
seen first hand what can happen to kids in a big city.My stepson lives in
NYC. He's 14 now and spoiled rotten! He's VERY materialistic. I hate it!!!
His attitude winds up being "if you love me, you'll buy me whatever I want."
(wow that's wierd! this modem repeated my last line!) BTW, in case OMNI
hasn't told you who I am yet,I'm his sister,"The Evil One" I guess he's
supposed to be "The Good One". Yeah right !!!!!! Freida if you read this
first,Casually ask Jim who the Evil one is. You'll shock the hell out of
him! Anyway , tell him that I miss him. Raphael, wants a rock from there.
I got my hair done yesterday. a permanent. I look like a wild woman!
I don't look as bad as Jim did the time he got the afro. But I'm not
far from it. my boyfriend is going to come in from NYC. all the convincing
in the world couldn't bring him in, but the minute I look like a fool,
he comes

WHY DO MEN DO THIS TO US WOMEN ?????
I took a cab yesterday to work. I heard that two drivers got into a bad fight
(I don't know what over) But I heard that one guy pulled a knife and "cut"
the other guy.I don't think the guy was cut real bad. he drove himself
to the hospital. The police carted the other guy away. Jim, you work
there. I HAVEN'T TOLD MOM YET, TELL ME,SHOULD I ???? send me mail.
I don't know if I,ll be able to recieve it. I'm not that good with these
things. It took me three times to get on this particular conference!
anyway write back to me right away. I miss you Buttmunch!!!!
                                       Love,
                                         "The Evil One" :)

#34 of 50 by evil1 on Mon Jan 15 01:53:05 1996:

absolutely correct!!! I've been pegged!! I figured i'd have a change.
Omni started to call me the evil one so much that now when i call a
cab,THEY even call me the evil one!!! It's routine for me to ride
around in omni's cab with him on sat after i get off work.then we go out for
dinner. (we have fun) they tell him to go and get the evil one when it's
time to pick me up. the nickname really stuck!!! I've grown to really like
it.good thing huh?

#35 of 50 by srw on Mon Jan 15 03:03:43 1996:

Marlene, I am glad you are past your problem getting logged in.
I wonder how Jim is going to find a rock on freida's mountain, unless he waits
for the spring thaw.

#36 of 50 by evil1 on Mon Jan 15 04:11:04 1996:

I finally got logged onbut I can't seem to figure out how to send any E-Mail.
I'd like to send Jim a letter. I'm trying to catch him on here but to no
avail. In order for Jim to find a rock,I think he'll have to dig down a
few of snow. If that's what it takes, hell do it! Jim's real sweet that way
he'll do anything for a friend.Oh, BTW, our friend Peggy wants him to go
out and hug a tree. (it's supposed to be good for you hey, look on
the bright side, he'll be so far out in the woods that nobody will
bable to see him. Peggy makes a fool of herself here in A2!!!!

#37 of 50 by freida on Mon Jan 15 19:56:45 1996:

Hi evil1! Jim has spoken very highly of you! I think he misses you too, as
the longer he is here, the more he talks about you! Send email to
freezelandfreida@citynet.net I'll make sure Jim gets it
and I will tell him to log on and read this conf. tonight, if possible.
Right now, he is out with the children and the blitz (my husband) sight
seeing. They were supposed to go to the New River Gorge Bridge in Oak Hill.
It is one of the tallest single span bridges in the world and they have a
festival every year where people bungee jump from it and parachute from it.
We just got our lane plowed out yesterday and so he needed to relieve some
of his cabin fever by seeing the sights. Since my car only seats 4...I
volunteered to stay home...I like it here and I don't get cabin fever very
easily.
Jim should be able to both "hug a tree" and get a rock...even without
digging...we have plenty of stone fences here.

BTW I am sending a quart of pear/raspberry sauce and a quart of applebutter
home with Jim for the pot luck. Both were made from fruit trees here on the
farm. (evil1, I am also sending pints for the family). You will all have
to let me know what you think of my goodies...the pear/raspberry sauce is my
own invention.

Nice to finally meet you evil1! Come to grexstock '96 if you can!
