To start with, I am a white male, straight in actions, bi in attitudes. I want to understand what it means to be gay/bi/lesbian in today's world; so to all of you out there: what's it like?

I dunno...what's it like being straight? What's it like being male? What's it like being human? I guess the question makes even less sense to me, because I've only been out for a year or so, so I can't even compare what it's like nowadays with what it was like a while back. No that it's a bad question - I mean, I wonder what it would be like to be straight (or black, or female, or whatever) sometimes. It's just too big to answer, IMO.
I second that emotion.
Anectdotes might give people a better picture.
One thing I don't like is the double standard. When I tell people I'm bi, they say "Oh! How cool!" If my male friends come out, they're frowned upon. It's such a fad nowadays for a girl to be bisexual, and it makes me sick that so many women say they are but wouldn't touch a girl when it really comes down to it. Just my two cents. I haven't been treated differently, and when I told my friends a big response was, "Took you long enough." I guess they know me better than I do. =)
For some people, in certain career fields, it really bites...or so I'm
told. ;{
hmmm
Amen, Sarah. Doesn't it suck! I mean, it really does. That's why I don't let my guard down to just anyone.
