Grex Gardening Item 48: An item in which the author talks about fake trees... [linked]
Entered by willard on Sun Jul 23 14:04:48 UTC 2000:

What do you guys think of those fake trees? I got 2 of them at
Linens n' Things. They look a lot like real trees, except you don't
have to water them, and they don't drop their leaves.

I put one in the guest bedroom, and one in the living room.

I already have too many real trees. Why would I want fakes?

#2 of 27 by slynne on Sun Jul 23 14:56:11 2000:

I like them. I have found though that if you put one in the window, the
sun fades the leaves after a few years. I think next time I might try a
real tree.

Those ficus trees are kind of neat. Great place to hide an X10 cam to
spy on a housepet.

Yah, I'm trying not to go too nuts here, because I'm going to be
buying a house in about a year. But I needed something to add some
character to the room, and I wanted something that I didn't have to
take care of.

Fake plants rule.

They make great props for trailer park porn. Bet Rugg has a few, too.

Hahahahahaha. Oh shit.

My office-mate has a very fake-looking tree (Latin name Ficus Fakus) in
our office. I hate it.

#8 of 27 by willard on Sun Jul 23 15:32:11 2000:

Wouldn't that be Ficus fakus, and not Ficus Fakus?

#9 of 27 by jerryr on Sun Jul 23 15:51:18 2000:

oh gawd, i just thought of the pontius pilot bit in monty python's holy grail.
sticus dicus?

fake plants rule! they are so much neater than the real thing. and if
someone knocks one over you don't have to call in coach's cleaners.

This item linked to the plants conference as #48.

i had a faux ficus in my apartment for a long time, to fill up a corner
space. After a few years I got rid of it. I now have little houseplants
around, and I like them better.

Plus there is a store called Trees 'n Trends, and it just bothers me.

Greggy, that's The Life of Brian, not Holy Grail. :()

ok, either one crackes me up, but i sit corrected.

Only our Xmas tree is fake. We have never wanted a live tree killed
for a short-term interior decoration, so we bought live trees. We
eventually ran out of planting space (and its a jungle out there as
it is....). We do have a couple of interior live trees, which are
no trouble (well...unless one gets knocked over, as jerryr mentions).

I take it you aren't a Norseman with Yule tendencies.

I associate fake trees with doctor's waiting rooms and would be unlikely to
put one in my house.

#19 of 27 by jerryr on Mon Jul 24 02:39:55 2000:

yeah, all their equipment would tend to crowd out the living room furniture.

#20 of 27 by beeswing on Mon Jul 24 03:10:52 2000:

My allergist had Lava Lamps in his waiting room.

#21 of 27 by rcurl on Mon Jul 24 05:23:06 2000:

Hardly anyone knows of the mythological connection of Xmas trees
and pagan practices. A few learn about that, mostly after childhood.
We did it because a) our parents both did it, and b) we had a child
(now, no longer a child). It was a 'different' kind of thing to do
that amused our child and brightened up a few winter days. It was
too much trouble, though, to dream up our own version of brighening
up winter days.

has anyone got a green plasting watering can for their fake Chinese rubber
  plant?

#23 of 27 by scg on Mon Jul 24 06:16:10 2000:

Why does a Christmas tree need that much rationalization?

#24 of 27 by tod on Mon Jul 24 11:03:47 2000:

It's a Hannukah Bush, you're all just trying to come up with one day to
have it.

#25 of 27 by rcurl on Mon Jul 24 15:58:52 2000:

There is no rationalization in #21. We didn't think about it at all. That
is just what we *did*. I describe it now from years later.

fake plastic trees...

I like my real ficus. It's been good at not dropping leaves and it
seems to like it's spot by the front window.
I am not a fan of fake plants.

My mother has a fake tree or two about the place. They tend to drop their
flowers, but at least they don't set off her allergies. And green is nice.
