You can estimate your social security benefits with a program you
can ftp from the Social Security Administration. If you don't know
your earning under Social Security, you can call 800-772-1213 and
I am told they will send you a Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate
Statement. You will also receive a report of your earnings while
paying into Social Security.
For the software,
!
ftp ftp.ssa.gov
as user type anonymous
for passwd type your internet address (___@cyberspac.org)
once connected, cd oact
get readme.pia a short file, downloads in a few seconds
get anypia.zip over 300 k
quit
Then download to your pc and pkunzip -d anypia.zip <pathname where you
want it>. Then delete from your home directory so as not to take up
space on grex that you're not using.

Hmmm. I have an idea. If there are people who want this, let's get *one* copy and put it in /tmp for a while, so we can avoid having umpteen people grab copies over our already-slow-as-molassas link?
wh already has it in his home dir, & posted that fact in the announcements item. Moving it somewhere standard, or leaving it around longer, sounds like a reasonable idea.
Where should we put it?
Is this for unix, dos or mac?
Since it's a .zip file, it's probably for dos.
If you are under fourty, you are wasting your time. Your benefits will be approximately $0 per month, cause there aren't enough people to pay for all the benefits MY generation is going to use up.
The movies 'Logan's Run' and 'Soylent Green' suddenly come to mind...
I had heard that was the case #6, but the information I recently received (a brochure) and the requested statement lead me to believe otherwise. Does anybody know for sure?
Nobody can predict the future, but it's hard to imagine how SS can continue to exist wthout some substantial changes. Payroll taxes will have to continue to go up, and/or income taxes will rise so that the surplus in the trust fund can actually cash in its treasury IOU's, and/or a more comprehensive means testing, and/or partial privatization...
