There are, to my count, a burgeoning number of feminists out there. A brief synopsis of terms, as far as I have been able to suss them out (because of my plumbing, I am often excluded from these conversations, but I'll stick my foot in my mouth anyway...): Feminist: someon who believes that females are human, too. Separatist: someone who believes that females are human. Only. Power feminist: someone who believes that the separatists sit around all day bitching about how they've been screwed by the system and the faceless/ nameless/well-hung "Patriarchy" when their time should be spent actually working to improve their condition by re-establishing strong female niches in mainstream society (whether it is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or, by opposing, END THEM). Pro-sex feminist: someone who believe that the separatists need to get laid By the amount of content I've writen for each one, I guess you can guess which one I am. :-)
Where am I living?? I have never heard of the term :-(. I have always been a feminist (and proud of it) and I have always been pro-sex (and proud of it). But I never knew I had a category which encompassed both orientations. The label does omit an awful lot else about me.
(I wonder if Paglia counts as a pro-sex feminist? I think so.)
Here is my 2 Trillion Cents worth. I am a 27 year old feminist and at that a International-Feminist. The agenda is if you forgot is the Human Earth right to walk on this planet, as who we are. Sexuality is what is use to oppress all women, yes even in usa,. The mere fact that women here in usa do not own their bodies let alone their sexuality, for example there are still males who believe that lesbians *fuck* women and *fuck* women over[D Ohh oops sorry for the *f**** but that is an example of the opression of sexuality in this country. women need to redefine their sexuality. To make this short and something to think about, hink how could a women redefine her sexuality without the opressive influence of males, I think the sexuality of lesbian and Bisexual women ar making some attempts, and Madonna was good at selling the idea of a women in charge, sexually speaking. So to get back to the point, since a can't scroll-up and insert. Lesbian and Bisexual women have a differt outlook towards sex, and I think that they are trying to let the mainstream women Know that sex is human and they have civil rights in bed.
I didn't understand that part about "there are still some males who believe that lesbians ..." - could you explain what you meant there, Sonja?
Wow, are there a lot of women out there who must be going out (read: sleeping with) the wrong men! I have never had trouble with my "civil rights" in bed! Im very mainstream,a nd believe that if you make your bed, you lie in it for any of you old enough to remember the expression! In other words, don't get angry at the world if your SO is overpowering in bed! Get an SO who respects you and whom you respect. All else will follow. What a lot of bitterness! :( I feel sorry for people who are so angry with men, instead of enjoying the company of all kinds of people.
Simcha, I'm old enough to remember "You make your your bed, you lie in it." I also grew up around a whole bunch of the most andro-centric I've ever encountered. I was married at 21, and hadn't a clue that there were better SO's to be had. I was raised with the idea of marrying a man and keeping him happy, making lots of babies, and doing what I was told. By the time I found out whatI crock I'd been fed all my life I was *PISSED*! I went through a 3 year period of being a separatist who hated men on principle and hated what I thought they stood for. It was very healing. I took the next step in part because I had two young sons and didn't want to raise them to feel as badly about them as I had been raised to feel. As soon as I started looking around again, with trust in my heart (at least some of the time) I began to encounter a different sort of man. A gentle, egalitarian man who could like me for who I am; who didn't need me to do as he said to think of me as a good person; who didn't, for that matter, have trouble thinking of me as a person. I think that, unfortunate and unfair as it is, an angry separatist period is necessary and healing for some women and will be as long as there are pockets of our society where men are absolutely in charge and taking unfair advantage of it. I apologize in my heart to any good men I hurt with my unreasoning anger during that period. But I don't apologize for the anger. Until I purged myself of the self hate I wasn't capable of being an equal to anyone; that required a cleansing fire.

Comment on #7-- Anger is a force. And some people need the energy of their own anger before they can do what needs to be done. Ideally the anger would be under one's own thoughtful control, but most of these situations are far from ideal!
