Grex Enigma Item 342: Name That Tune!
Entered by remmers on Tue Dec 29 17:21:30 UTC 1998:

Okay, here's how this works. The person who's "it" hums a well-known
tune. Other people try to guess the name of it. The first person to do
so correctly "wins" and gets to hum the next tune.

Happy humming!

I'll start:

hmmmm hmmmm, hmm hm hm hmm hmm, hmmmm hmmmm hmmmmmmmm,
hmmmm hmmmm, hmm hm hm hmm hmm, hmm hm hm hmm hmm hmmmmmmmm.

Name that tune!

"Feelings"?

#3 of 48 by remmers on Wed Dec 30 14:55:59 1998:

Nope, not "Feelings".

As The Snord Turns?

#5 of 48 by remmers on Mon Jan 4 00:07:50 1999:

Now now. This is a *real* song.

If nobody get it in the next day or two, I'll hum another part
of the song for you.

#6 of 48 by md on Mon Jan 4 01:47:28 1999:

"The Way We Were"?

#7 of 48 by remmers on Mon Jan 4 12:51:28 1999:

Not "The Way We Were".

#8 of 48 by lee on Mon Jan 4 23:03:51 1999:

Re: #5 <looks hurt> That is too a real song!
How about "All my Snords"?

#9 of 48 by md on Tue Jan 5 02:12:47 1999:

"Besa Me Mucho"?

#10 of 48 by remmers on Tue Jan 5 12:36:58 1999:

I apologize for doubting the reality of Snordly things even for
an instant. However, you're barking up the wrong trio.

Not "All My Snords" or "Besa Me Mucho".

Okay, I'll hum another part of the song:

hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm
hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm
        hm hmmmm hmmmmmmmmmmmm
hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm
hm hm hm hm hm hm hm hm
        hm hmmmm hmmmm hmmmm hmmmm

#11 of 48 by md on Tue Jan 5 13:34:05 1999:

"I've Got Tears in My Ears (From Lying on My Back in My
Bed When I Cry Over You)"?

#12 of 48 by remmers on Tue Jan 5 20:04:19 1999:

Nope, not that one.

#13 of 48 by md on Tue Jan 5 21:30:03 1999:

Damn, I know this tune. Is it "Mandy"?

#14 of 48 by lee on Wed Jan 6 02:29:23 1999:

Snord's Hope?

#15 of 48 by remmers on Thu Jan 7 12:41:19 1999:

Sorry, none of the above.

Gosh, and I thought this would be easy.

One Snord to Live?

#17 of 48 by remmers on Sat Jan 9 00:05:08 1999:

No, sorry.

Hint: This song was sung in a movie.

#18 of 48 by md on Sat Jan 9 04:15:28 1999:

[md slaps forehead] "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"!

#19 of 48 by md on Sat Jan 9 04:22:21 1999:

Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me,
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

Saw a cute cartoon in the New Yorker a few months ago.
Dorothy, the Tim Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly
Lion are standing there with the Wizard, and Dorothy
is saying: "And please, sir, I'd like a large and devoted
following of gay men."

#20 of 48 by remmers on Sat Jan 9 14:23:47 1999:

"Over the Rainbow" it is. Excellent. Md's up for the next hum.

#21 of 48 by lee on Sat Jan 9 15:36:26 1999:

<lee gets another rainbow song stuck in her head>

Why are there so many songs about rainbows?
And what's on the other side?

#22 of 48 by rcurl on Sat Jan 9 19:39:12 1999:

Because they are nice.
Sky.

#23 of 48 by md on Sun Jan 10 13:04:02 1999:

Okay, here's mine. This song was released in 1967, I think.

Hm hm hm hmm hm hm hmm hm hm hmm?
Hm hm hmm hm hm hmm hm hm hmmmmmmmm?
Hm hm hm hmm hm hm hmm hm hm hmm,
Hm hm hmm hm hm hmm hm hm hmmmmmmmm.

#24 of 48 by orinoco on Sun Jan 10 16:59:19 1999:

The questions in the first 2 lines make me think of "Blowin' in the wind",
but I'm not sure if they rhythm's quite right.
Come to think of it, the question marks are in the wrong places for "Blowin'
in the wind" too.
Curses.

The rhythm fits the Beatles' "With a little help from my friends". Was that
'67?

I'm putting my vote in for the 1st verse of "With a little help from my
friends"

#25 of 48 by md on Sun Jan 10 23:06:10 1999:

Right you are, Miles. Your turn.

(That one was *way* too easy.)

#26 of 48 by lee on Mon Jan 11 01:43:06 1999:

<lee fails to remember 1967>

#27 of 48 by orinoco on Wed Jan 13 18:43:06 1999:

hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm,
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm hm hmmmmm!
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm,
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm hm hmmmmm!

hmm hm hm hmm hmm
hmm hm hm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm!
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm hm hmmmmm!

#28 of 48 by lee on Fri Jan 15 02:43:30 1999:

I would walk 500 miles?

#29 of 48 by orinoco on Sun Jan 17 04:03:34 1999:

Nope. Maybe I should comment that this is a classical tune, not one from
popular music. (Not to say that classical music isn't popular, but...ah,
whatever)

#30 of 48 by md on Sun Jan 17 17:04:56 1999:

Beethoven's 9th, 4th mvt?

#31 of 48 by lee on Sun Jan 17 20:47:15 1999:

Pathetique?

#32 of 48 by orinoco on Mon Jan 18 16:05:07 1999:

Md has it!

#33 of 48 by md on Tue Jan 19 15:43:39 1999:

Okay, I hope this one isn't too easy:

Hmmm hm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm
hmm hmm hmmmm hmm hmmmm hm-hm-hmmmm.
Hmmm hm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm hmm hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Hmmm hm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm
hmm hmm hmmmm hmm hmmmm hm-hm-hmmmm,

Hmmmmmmmm,

hmm hmm hmmmm hmm hmmmm hmmmm hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

i don't think i have ever seen anything quite as unusual as this item in

hmm hMm - no, that's not it...

#37 of 48 by md on Fri Jan 22 13:10:39 1999:

Hint: It was first heard over the closing credits of a well-known
movie.

#38 of 48 by i on Fri Jan 22 23:51:48 1999:

Ah! It's the Double Bass theme from Bela Bartok's Fantasia for String
Hextet!
