This is the Game of Nutrition Facts Labels, Part III. Here is how it is played: Someone enteres the nutrition facts label from a food product; others try to guess the food. The first person to guess correctly gets to enter the next Mysterious Label. Following tradition, I am entering this item in Enigma with the expectation that it will be linked to Kitchen. I'll let Valerie take it from there; I believe there may be a Label in Progress.

This item is now linked from Enigma 289 to Kitchen 137. We need to find someone to link it to the Puzzle conference, too. (Carson is the fw there, but hasn't logged in recently.) Here's the current food-to-be-guessed, from the previous "What Am I" item: #408 Broke+Hungry Grad Student(abchan) on Wed Feb 5 22:25:58 1997: <abchan hopes she's doing this right, it being the first time she's entered an item to be guessed> Serving Size 2 oz Servings Per Container 8 Calories 210 Callories from Fat 10 Total Fat 1g 2% Saturated Fat 0g 0% Cholesterol 0mg 0% Sodium 0mg 0% Total Carbohydrate 42g 14% Dietary Fiber 2g 7% Sugars 3g Protein 7g Vitamin A 0% Vitamin C 0% Calcium 0% Iron 10% Thiamin 30% Riboflavin 10% Niacin 15%
rice cakes?
(Procedural question: Will we know when somebody guesses it? Amy doesn't seem to be around much these days.)
Good point, Martha. I'll send her e-mail to ask. Grex says she was last logged in on May 6.
Those funky new baked-not-fried potato chips?
Re: #3 and #4 I am alive. End of the semester crunch has ended. Not rice cakes. Not funky (or non-funky) baked-not-fried potato chips. (Am I doing this right? Or am I supposed to give hints?)
You're doing fine. If we start sounding stumped, or if we stop guessing, or if you happen to think up an interesting hint that you want to pass along, then by all means go ahead and give hints.
Okay, well people have stopped guessing, so I take that as a hint that I should be giving some hints :) Uh, I guess the rice cakes were sorta on the right track as this is a member of the grain food group. Now somebody guess! :)
Veggie burgers?
Oh, for other folks reading this: Type "only 1" to see the label info again.
<abchan wasn't aware that veggie burgers belonged to the grains food group> No, not veggie burgers. Any other guesses?
<What do you make veggie burgers out of anyway?>
(Actually, there are dozens of ways to make veggie burgers. I've run across ones made from any of: tempeh, black beans, walnuts and oats, textured vegetable protein, and assorted ordinary veggies (carrots, potatoes, etc.))
Breakfast cereal?
(textured vegetable protein? <sigh> )
Unsalted pretzels?
No, not breakfast cereal. Not unsalted pretzels. <isn't sure what else to say about said item and hopes for more guesses>
Does popcorn qualify as a grain? Unsalted popcorn, perhaps?
Crackers? Rolled oats? Bread?
I'm not sure if popcorn is a grain. But it's not unsalted popcorn. Not crackers. Not rolled oats. Not bread. <abchan thinks if there hadn't been a massive delay in restarting this item, people would have gotten it sooner since she could have sworn she said what she was eating for a few days... or she's getting senile>
<If you said something, I wasn't paying attention. Which doesn't say much for either of us...>
Any more guesses? Please? I don't know what other hints to give; maybe someone could ask a question?
Does it consist of just the grain (like popcorn or some cereals) or the grain plus other stuff (like baked goodies or more complicated cereals)?
Simple grain. Although when cooking and consuming said item one often adds other non-grain things. (does that help? guesses?)
Rice?
<abchan shakes her head> No, not rice, but it's closer than the other guesses so far.
Lentils? Barley? Wheat berries? Oats? Oatmeal? Puffed rice breakfast cereal? Corn? (What's the rule again for entering more than one guess in a turn? Is it legal?) (Oh... come to think of it, this is a game with no rules. I think.)
millet
No, not any of the above. <sigh> I honestly don't know what else to say that wouldn't completely give it away. Okay, how's this for a clue? This food is boiled before consuming (at least I don't know of any other way to eat it)
has couscous been guessed? bulgur? wild rice? (or is that not really a grain?)
Actually, bulgur isn't exactly a grain either. I mean it is, but really it's wheat that's been parboiled and beaten up a bit. It's not its own type of plant. Some other type of pasta than couscous?
Well, but what is pasta but grain that has been combined with other ingredients and beaten up a bit?
Hmm. It's not rolled oats nor breakfast cereal. But it sure sounds like Ralston, oat fiber, cream o' wheat, or some other minimal-mechanical- processing old-fashioned breakfast food.
Hm. Wheatina? Cream of Rice?
Let's try Malt-o-Meal.
Not couscous. Not bulgur. Not wild rice. Yes, some other type of pasta than couscous (that's the hint of the day) Not oat fiber. Not cream o' wheat. Not Wheatina. Not Cream of Rice. Not Malt-o-Meal. (did I get everything?)
how about orzo?
Noodles!!! (But there's so MANY danged shapes to guess from...)
Shells, elbows, SPAGHETTI, egg noodles, wagon wheels, little white and pink pasta pieces shaped like lobsters, angel hair, pastina, rotini, tortellini, ravioli, tubettini, rigatoni, capellini?
