two old men
playing checkers 
somewhere in Brooklyn

The black squares
are a shadow of the
night sky, and the red squares
a reflection of the sunset

One of the old men cheats, and the other
just wants to call it a draw
and go have lunch

Meanwhile, down in the deli
the moon is a raisin bagel
and the stars are hard-boiled eggs

Yes, but what is the cream cheese?

I haven' gotten to the cream cheese yet, although there is a rumor going around
that the sun is a poppyseed muffin....

Hey!  I'm impressed.  And on a hot July afternoon, it's a fragel, right?

The cream cheese is for those of us who possess the oddity of a chessboard
having black and white squares.  The black are the shadow of a night sky,
then, and the white are the cream cheese.
See, it's all quite simple when thus explicated.

You repeatedly talk about food.  Food sacrifices won't save you
