Entered by eharkins on Sun Sep 25 20:05:50 UTC 1994:

Is the world a round flat place that we fall off on to?

 No, but Grex is.

#2 of 67 by rcurl on Sun Sep 25 20:42:02 1994:

Hmmm...this is not enigma, so its not necessarily a trick question.
But I'd agree that it looks round, and I fall on it now and then. I
guess that ends the discussion for me.

Wow - what a great item! I'm linking it to enigma el prontoroonie!!!

#4 of 67 by gerund on Mon Sep 26 16:22:42 1994:

Off on to is SUCH a wonderful wording.

#5 of 67 by bdh on Sat Oct 1 01:54:03 1994:

A round flat place. Hmm, when I jump up and down the tonal
qualities of the thud sound rather flat to me. Usually when
one falls, one falls off something. Thus one falls off something
else onto another something, usually the earth, which is round.
And is tonally flat when jumped up and down on....

The answer is Yes.

Sign, it *was* SO nice not to see idiot-racism for a while, but ....
it's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

#7 of 67 by tnt on Sun Oct 2 06:14:41 1994:

Idiot-racism, as opposed to smart-racism. That sounds pretty idiotic to me!

#8 of 67 by tsty on Wed Oct 5 06:48:04 1994:

Only tnt would try to make a distinction between the two evils, most
of us are brighter than that.

#9 of 67 by kami on Wed Oct 5 20:17:55 1994:

gentlemen! take this nonsense back to agora and leave us to be silly
in peace.
for that matter, this is the first non-inflamatory comment I have ever
seen from bdh, so I was rather enjoying it. I've seen some other similarly
unfortunate and inappropriate names, but I generally assume the person made
a mistake and hasn't yet learned how to change a name. (I just did.)
Do respond to content, please.

#10 of 67 by remmers on Thu Oct 6 00:02:16 1994:

<snord notes that this item is linked to agora and the inflammatory
folks are probably reading it there.>

#11 of 67 by tsty on Sun Oct 9 03:54:43 1994:

The "it" from Chicago has almost always had quality content, that
has never been in question (to me).

However .... the passive RACISM in its headline is justification
enough for castigation in the extreme, as some people have heard
me enunciate directly.

Is there anyone stupid enough to APPROVE its chfn? Speak NOW or
get the hell out of the way!

#12 of 67 by scg on Sun Oct 9 05:49:12 1994:

If by approve you mean not censor, then I approve of his decision to use
that name. If by approve you mean admire, or that if I approved of it I
would do it myself, then I don't approve. I do find that name at least
mildly offensive, but there are probably people out there who find things
that I have said offensive.

#13 of 67 by carson on Sun Oct 9 08:07:51 1994:

I approve.

<snord notes that his response #10 was correct.>

#16 of 67 by wh on Sun Oct 9 21:35:41 1994:

I find it extremely offensive, on the same level as calling someone's
mother a whore. But if a grown person wants to act four years old
and offend whole groups of people to the extreme, he won't be
changed now. The only reason it is permitted is that Grex as a
community chooses not to censor remarks that are even offensive in
the extreme.

#17 of 67 by scg on Sun Oct 9 22:19:44 1994:

I also find it offensive that TS referrs to bdh as "it," although I'm not
going to stop him from saying it.

Maybe there are some incomplete-reading people responding here, nothing
negative, nay, it is positive, has been said about its content.

EVERYTHING negative has, and will continue to be SAID, about its CHFN.

If some people find its chfn only "mildly offensive," then you display,
by that opinion, the phenomenon of gross undereducation. Learn more.

A four year old doesn't have the mental capacity to promote racism. It
takes a perverted adult to promote racism.

There is a bumper sticker on my car: Censorship Destroys

Here I will state: Destroy Racism

Any problems with that?

If "you" have a value system that works, you must be able to "destroy"
certain things, and be willing to do it, and be willing to be accountable
for doing it. I am.

If "your" value system doesn't work, let your kid kill your spouse and
say, "gee."

<snord considers unlinking this item from Enigma, but decides against it,
since although it is not the purpose of Enigma to encourage seriousness,
we do not wish expressly to forbid it.>

#22 of 67 by carson on Mon Oct 10 11:03:28 1994:

you can't be serious!

#23 of 67 by brighn on Tue Oct 11 06:50:08 1994:

I'm confused as to why so many are responding to BDH's handle
as racism. Certainly they are merely seeing the "nigger" and
are having gut reactions. I'm sure to get flamed for this, and
I probably shouldn't be jumping into the fray at this late date,
but I'm with Kami on this. How is "nigger lover" being interpreted?
If the first word is meant as being derogatory, than the phrase
is either illgoically condescending, or simply oxymoronic (and
no easy jokes about taking the "oxy" off, please). He had a
comment to make, and he was shut down because of a handle he's
had for a loooooooooooooooooooong time.

Oh, well, I've already had my say about "nigger" on another item,
so I'll shush up now.

#24 of 67 by srw on Tue Oct 11 07:26:03 1994:

Rather than flaming, I am inclined more to agree with you.
I've said this before, but it bears repeating.
bdh has chosen an irritating name. It is irritating precisely because it
reminds us of racism. I detest racism, but I have seen nothing racist in
his name (despite tsty's protestations) since bdh has chosen that name
for himself. I also believe bdh chose it to get a reaction, and ts is
giving him what he wants - I'd prefer to ignore him (I usually do).

#25 of 67 by brighn on Tue Oct 11 07:34:44 1994:

(This part of my comments elsewhere bears repeating here, Popcorn:
Censoring may destroy, but censoring racists will not destroy their
racist mindset, it will destroy the lines of communication between
you and them. It will, in most cases, increase their racist attitudes.
You may want to destroy the lines of communication, but that won't
stop the baseball bats from swinging.)

end" -- The Specials.

#26 of 67 by katie on Tue Oct 11 16:20:09 1994:

I don't find bdh's chfn offensive and I am not undereducated, TS. I do
find the "it" stuff irritating. Not offensive, irritating. I don't
appreciate you defining me by whether or not I agree with your opinion
of something or someone.

a line from a TMBG song on 'Flood' the whole song is good...listen to it

I second Jeremy's recomendation- very good song.

#31 of 67 by brighn on Wed Oct 12 03:27:20 1994:

Sorry, Valerie, I was responding to 20 (tsty), but since 19 was
short, I missed the break. <sheepish look, while eating humble pie>

#32 of 67 by tnt on Wed Oct 12 04:22:12 1994:

TeSTY is putting on a big act. If he was really serious, there would be
many valid RACIST! things going on in this world for him to deal with.

A word or phrase is just that. Some of you are apparently quite content
& complacent about things, until someone merely utters a word or phrase,
when only then causes you to (at least in the case of TeSTY) to launch into
some gran mal seizure, & try to demonstrate what a wonderful person you
are by strongly --publically-- reacting.

Hey TeSTY, QUIET DOWN, YOU WATER BUFFALO!!!

#33 of 67 by brighn on Wed Oct 12 04:51:42 1994:

"Why can't we all just get along?"

#34 of 67 by tsty on Wed Oct 12 16:01:10 1994:

My use of "it" is an intentional and studied insult with a solitary
and deserved target. Its chfn is studied and intentional smear of, among
others, those it loves, its wife and child - to say nothing of a sizeable
number of the human species.

As far as education is concerned, eveyone has strong areas and weak
areas. I'd be on katie's doorstep in a second if i needed financial
planning expertise or horsemanship information - actually, if I could
use that information.

Only tnt would spawn the thought of "valid RACIST! things."

#35 of 67 by katie on Wed Oct 12 19:48:07 1994:

I don't see bdh's chfn as being a smear on anyone, especially his wife/child.

#36 of 67 by tnt on Thu Oct 13 03:30:27 1994:

Well then you *must* be a RACIST! too!

#37 of 67 by tsty on Thu Oct 13 05:53:47 1994:

That works, you don't see it, I do. Same with financial stuff, you can
see it and I can't, which is why I recommmend your expertise and would/will
ask for it when I can use it. That's the beauty of different
educations/experience.

Some differences, however, are grotesquely ugly in a pandemic sense and
its passive promotion of racism is the current example.

#38 of 67 by bru on Thu Oct 13 14:36:32 1994:

I wish people would quit arguing about bdh and what he means. bdh wants to
create conflict. He has found an easy way to do it and so he does. Either
ignore him or forget him or pretend his chfn is something else.
