I'm looking for a good painter to paint the outside of my parents house. Their house is a difficult case as it was sided with redwood and then was painted with a mixture of linseed oil and shellac several times over a 30 year period. About 4 years ago that was covered with a standard, pigmented, latex house paint. The linseed oil mixture did a great job of preserving the redwood (As though it needed it.) but now forms blisters under the paint when the hot summer sun hits it. The redwood is too soft to pressure wash (One bozo already tried that and only proved me right.) and I am at a bit of a loss as how to approach preparing and painting this house. Any thoughts?

Go to Andersons and ask for advise.
would alkyd paint work better? It might be more compatible with the linseed oil. Try calling any of the paint companies for advice. Kurfees has someone in the technical dept. who is really interested in paint chemistry. I think Kurfees is sold at Paint N Stuff 996-5700 and you can call them for the number (might be an 800 number). Have you tried a light sanding? Is it really the linseed oil making bubbles, or the latex paint which is bubbling because it does not stick?
Getting the paint to stick is not a problem. The blisters I mentioned occur somewhere between the redwood and several layers of shellac / linseed oil applications. Late this summer, a painter showed up at my neighbors house because he thought their house could use a coat f paint. They cautiously gave him the job and he did a very nice job, showed up when he said he would, etc. Having seen him work and the quality of his work, I asked him if he would be interested in doing my parents house. He took the job. I suspect the blistering will continue but he left my folks with paint so they could touch it up and said he would come by in the spring to take care of any problems. It is the nicest paint job the house has had in years and my parents were very happy with him too.
