Entered by raven on Sun Jun 12 07:21:01 UTC 1994:

Do any of you read FringWare, 2600, Wired, MoNdO 2 0 0 0? This is the item
to discuss zines of cyber culture/practice, theory etc.

i have always personally considered Mondo pretty lame, all though
i have only seen a couple issues, though. I just picked up the June
issue of "Wired" in the Airport, and think it has a good chance at
success. Phrack, an info-zine in .txt form, is one of my favorites,
as is 2600. I have never heard of "Fringware" before.

#2 of 94 by dang on Fri Jun 24 17:44:20 1994:

never heard of any of them. enlighten us as to who, what, when, where,
why, and how, please.

#3 of 94 by kentn on Fri Jun 24 18:59:10 1994:

I read Phrack and 2600 occasionally. They are hacker/phone phreak
publications, discussing the inner workings of phone systems and
computer systems.

Hmm I can't believe anyone could be here and _not_ read at least one of those
zines... Mondo 2K has nice DTP, but pretty pics do not make a good read...
WiRED in the otherhand is an amazing experience, I'd recommend seeking it out
very much, if at least for one issue. Phrack is nice, but too localised -
if you're not in the scene area then most of it is irrelevant.
2600 is a zine I'd love to get myhands on.... help anyone? (UK guy here)
But more than anything I want the FringeWAre address

= Requiem =

        Fringeware PO Box 49921
        Austin, Texas
        USA
        78765

Fringeware is the most interesting grass roots cyber zine IMHO.
The production isn't 1.8th as good as Wired but the content is decent.
Ofcourse I'm biased because there is ab=n ad for a hypercard stack I
was involved in in issue # 2.

#6 of 94 by requiem on Mon Oct 3 11:32:17 1994:

I remember hearing there was a Fringe Ware web site where you
could look at their products. Address anyone?

You could try gophering to UofTexas at Austin.

Phrack is great! It has really developed over time into a good
hacking/phreaking magazine. If you haven't read it, get it. It can really
come in handy, sometimes.

#9 of 94 by jg on Mon Nov 21 00:42:27 1994:

Has anyone read Interactive Age?

#10 of 94 by jg on Tue Nov 22 03:57:34 1994:

Millimeter?

#11 of 94 by nephi on Tue Dec 6 03:40:33 1994:

I read somewhere that one of the above magazines told how to make free
long-distance phone calls from a payphone. Did anyone see this article?
I am very interested....

#12 of 94 by raven on Tue Dec 6 04:15:25 1994:

See item # 7 and check out phrack or 2600. And please don't tell em
I sent you...

#13 of 94 by nephi on Tue Dec 6 04:22:40 1994:

Thank you. This was my first trip to this conference, and I hadn't
gotten that far, yet. Sorry.

#14 of 94 by raven on Tue Dec 6 19:49:22 1994:

Hey no problem have fun, and above all DON'T GET CAUGHT. They
threw Fiber Optik in jail for a year for hacking and phreaking.

#15 of 94 by jason242 on Mon Jan 16 17:07:05 1995:

Mondo2k makes interesting reading occasionally. There spot on pirate
radio and encryption was great. Problem is I think they are trying
to look legitamate..while others such as 2600 dunt really care.

#17 of 94 by raven on Fri Mar 31 06:26:40 1995:

re # 16 Are you involved with Fringeware Brenner??? If so look for
a full page ad for the Xen Distractionsim hypercard stack in issue # 3 (or
it might be # 2), I did the graphic design and publicity for said stack,
which is now alas defunct due to legal difficulties.

#18 of 94 by raven on Fri Mar 31 06:36:40 1995:

        I confirmed it's # 3.

i would like to write a piece entitled,

Why I am Not A Lawyer,
by Marsha Clark

#21 of 94 by thanne on Sat Apr 1 04:33:00 1995:

I am unthrilled with Fringeware, but perhaps I should give it another
try. In the issue I read, they not only altered a poem by our own
beloved Humdog, but they consistently spelled "guy" "gy", which I found
incredibly irritating. Even in articles that were written by guest
writers -- must've used a search and replace because I'm sure that at
least one of the writers would never have spelled it that way.

#22 of 94 by raven on Sat Apr 1 06:45:47 1995:

They have p.c. grammer nazis at Fringeware, tsk, tsk, if they would
        only
free their minds their asses would follow.

#23 of 94 by brenner on Sat Apr 1 14:54:49 1995:

We should get Jerod23 over here.

#24 of 94 by sdober on Sat Apr 1 17:12:47 1995:

What on *earth* is wrong with "guy"? Can someone explain this
bullshit to me?

#25 of 94 by brenner on Sat Apr 1 17:15:00 1995:

Which bullshit, Dr. Doggie?
(smooch)

#26 of 94 by sdober on Sat Apr 1 17:25:32 1995:

smooches mooches.

#27 of 94 by brenner on Sat Apr 1 18:28:34 1995:

hooches pooches

#28 of 94 by humdog on Sun Apr 2 19:18:33 1995:

the Theory appears to be that it is Masculinist...

but i always thought it was gender nuetral.
then one day some woman chewed me out for it.

#29 of 94 by thanne on Mon Apr 3 01:11:13 1995:

Guy with no "u", you mean? I consider "guy" to be gender neutral as well.
But in any case, this spelling of the word ("gy" <shudder>) was used in
referring to men. Exclusively, I think. I don't recall women being called
guys with either spelling. Anyway, it just struck me as weird,
pretentious, unnecessary, etc.

#30 of 94 by humdog on Thu Apr 6 15:41:31 1995:

ok.

so i went back to echo.
and they said to me, look you don't like what we do,
you go to the feedback conference and say what you want.
so i said fine.
and i went.

and i gave them a rant about censoring discourse in cyberspace.
and the hostie from writers said, you are Bad Doggie humdog
and you must not say things like that.
and i said
look. the woman's ideas that i complained about betrayed
to me a thin mind.
i said it then, i shall say it now and i shall continue to
say it until she says something that makes me think otherwise.
and then the host said, well then i shall continue to send you
email.
and i said most fair hostie,
you do not seem to get that you may rain down dumb questions
upon me until hell freezes over and you will not change my mind.
and furthermore, you may save yourself time and trouble by not
mailing me any more of your baltimore-catechismic graduate of
an assertiveness training academy political correct inquestions
because they bore me.
so then the gen. conf. manager wrote to me and said
humdog if you do not shut your mouth,
we shall put you on read only restrictions for a week.
and so i said,
please close my account as i believe the first amendment
still applies for now in the US.

so endeth the adventures of humdog on echonyc.com

#31 of 94 by raven on Thu Apr 6 18:05:58 1995:

Go humdog, work it grrrrrllll. What is the e-mail address of these
lamers we should all give them a piece of our minds.

#32 of 94 by humdog on Thu Apr 6 19:50:51 1995:

i believe that the Leader Of The Pack is one <horn>@echonyc.com

but i will see if i can get the address of the Baltimore Catechistimc
Inquisitor and her lackey

#33 of 94 by bunn on Fri Apr 7 14:13:41 1995:

it's too damn bad we've forbidden hero worship here in accord-ion...
cause after your adventures on echonyc.com, humdog, you deserve it
(hero worship that is...)

#34 of 94 by mdw on Tue Apr 11 22:15:25 1995:

Do people in the US try for thin minds as well as thin bodies?

#35 of 94 by juls on Tue Apr 11 23:58:08 1995:

So 'twould seem.

#38 of 94 by srw on Thu Apr 13 08:14:13 1995:

I thought bunn said that was forbidden.

#39 of 94 by humdog on Thu Apr 13 14:47:27 1995:

no.
humdog said it was forbidden.
and humdog is premenstrual...
