Grex Coop Item 305: cyberspace.org is about to expire
Entered by scholar on Sun Jan 9 21:46:37 UTC 2011:

According to whois records, the cyberspace.org domain name is set to expire
on the twelth:

Domain ID:D1696111-LROR
Domain Name:CYBERSPACE.ORG
Created On:13-Jan-1993 05:00:00 UTC
Last Updated On:15-Dec-2009 01:43:50 UTC
Expiration Date:12-Jan-2011 05:00:00 UTC

Mark Conger is still listed as the registrant.

If the domain name expires, it is my understanding that there is a grace
period during which it will still function and during which it will be
possible to re-register it. However, after that, it's almost certainly
going to be taken almost immediately by one of the vultures who buy up
almost all expired domains.

It's up to the treasurer to update our domain name(s). He's been given
a list of the due dates for items like this, prepared by Mark, so should
be aware. By the time of the next board meeting, it'll be expired.

According to
http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2005/03/how-to-snatch-an-expirin
g-d
omain
there is a 40 day grace period, but that the domain name will actually
cease to function during that period (I was wrong about that in my original
post). Perhaps someone could put messages on the website and in the MOTD
recommending people connect directly to Grex's IP address, 216.86.77.194, for
the time being.

It doesn't take that long to renew it. Also, grex.org expires on Feb 27.

Oo! thanks!

So has anybody renewed these yet or is the forty day grace period now
in effect after which grex's domains go away?

Try whois and see.

According to whois, the domain was updated on January 24 of this year.

yup :) btw, we could script that to insert a message on the website and
send mail so the next time we'd have advance warning?

Sounds like a reasonable idea. I don't know if it needs to be on the
web site, though. All you need is a cron job that checks once a month
and when the date of the run is one month away from expiration, send an
e-mail to staff. Then continue sending e-mails until the run date is
not past the expiration date again. Adjust the amount of advance
notice as needed.

umm.. yeah except what if grex goes down for that month.. once our
domain is grabbed we'd never get it back.. I was thinking more on
the lines of.. activate 3 months in advance and send 1 reminder to
everyone on a list and stick it in the news section in glaring
red. Once we are down to a month send 1 reminder a week to everyone!
Also, run the script on arbornet!! And we'd do the same for them..
Offsite emails ofcourse..

Ideally we should be renewing this 3 months in advance. Anyway,
whatever suits the majority.. mm.. maybe 'wall' also <g>

If Grex goes down for that month, the web site likely won't work,
either. And I did say we could adjust the amount of advance notice, so
three months in advance would work, too.

Or the responsible person could put a reminder in their home calendar.

Our domain names are set to automatically renew every year. That works
as long as our credit card is good; we'll have to reset it when we get a
new one. But there was no danger this year.

Thanks for clarifying, Mark. Some of these processes are unknown to us
since you've done them for so long. We really should put together a
manual for the operation of Grex...
