HVCN is looking for consumer information to put in a planned "Consumer Infocenter" on HVCN. This is not quite the same as a consumer conference, such as this one. iThe information is a bit more structured. Anyway, in HVCN's HVCN conference, item 13 (Announcements) response 2, Arnold Barr posted this: --- #2 of 2 by Arnold D. Barr (adbarr) on Sun Jul 28 19:03:52 1996: Consumer information -- in your travels around the Web and Washtenaw County, please keep you eyes open for good sources of consumer-oriented information and post them here. We are gathering information to create an InfoCenter for this information and would like suggestions. Some of the libraries have pointed to some of this but I am not aware of a concentrated site for this area, yet. For example -- I would like to point to the US Post Office site, and in particular their zip-code search engine, which is really a great site for practical use. This idea may cross boundaries, but that is a strength, I believe. Thanks for your help, in advance. --- That was actually a request for aid of any sort. URLs, volunteering to organize the info, volunteering to put it in an HTML form. SKills are not needed toohelp out in some of these ways.

Thanks, folks. Keep 'em coming, please! The Post office has a nice site
with the ability to locate ZIP plus 4 information by entering an
address. I'll post that here a little later. Have been working this
"side" for a while -- Ypsilanti Police and money plans.

Zip Code search starter page: http://www.usps.gov/ncsc/
Direct connect to Zip+4 search --

Finding Zip codes for a city or the city associated with a particular
code: http://www.usps.gov/ncsc/lookups/lookup_ctystzip.html
Postal Service Home Page - http://www.usps.gov/
These pages and the online services here are very well done, from what I
see. I also read recently that the USPS is going to offer a method of
providing USPS Certified email. I am not sure I want that or not, but
it seems to be coming! No more excuses! There are some interesting
possible effects in the area of legal notice and traditional time
allowances and requirements. This might make a good topie in the Law
Conference.
I also posted this on HVCN: #4 of 4 by Steve Weiss (srw) on Sun Aug 4 15:28:05 1996: For finding the cheapest price on computer hardware/peripherals.media, etc. I use http://www.pricewatch.com/
From HVCN: #5 of 8 by Richard I. Berk, DPM (rib) on Wed Aug 7 16:48:29 1996: Here are a few sites I've had bookmarked for my own reference. Include or discard as appropriate: The Internet Yellow Pages: http://www.yellow.com/ Starting Points for Internet Exploration is a page of many links related to the Internet: http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/Mosaic/StartingPoints/NetworkStart ingPoints.html Smart Talk with The Dolans, a radio talk show about financial matters: http://www.commspec.com/wor/page/dolans.htm Ticketmaster Online is self-explanatory: http://www.ticketmaster.com/ State of Michigan Homepage is one of many Michigan sites of interest. http://www.migov.state.mi.us/ #6 of 8 by Richard I. Berk, DPM (rib) on Wed Aug 7 16:55:28 1996: Oops... I see that one URL was too long to remain intact and clickable. The end of it should remain continuious so it reads like: www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/.../NetworkStartingPoints.html (I left off the http:// so it wouldn't read as clickable again. Insert the http://.../Software/Mosaic/StartingPoints/... fragment into the space designated and check it out manually. You can then bookmark it if you're inclined to.) (I hope this one didn't get made clickable by BackTalk). #7 of 8 by Arnold D. Barr (adbarr) on Wed Aug 7 18:47:46 1996: Well, I see there is some interest here. You are ordered to keep contributing to this item. Uh, requested? Begged? Implored? Thanks! Excellent work, folks! #8 of 8 by Steve Weiss (srw) on Fri Aug 9 00:18:49 1996: It is noted Rick, that the wrapping logic is interfering with the "clickable" logic. I think this will be cleaned up in an upcoming release. What should happen is that the text wraps, but the URL doesn't get truncated like it just did. If the next release of Backtalk doesn't do exactly that, I will take a look at the code and make sure it gets fixed. This problem lies squarely in a section of backtalk that I am responsible for (i.e. it s not Jan, this time). And now back to your regularly scheduled consumer information.
I also recently discovered a couple of travel sites which are new (via YaHoo!). One is a list of the 1-800 #'s for all the airlines, and another is for EasySabre (to book your own tickets, hotels and car rentals). There was another one for ticketing as well (which is free) and a couple of sites which you had to join, or pay fees for use. Don't have the URLs on this system, but check out YaHoo!/Travel/Airlines and you'll find them (can also get up to the minute flight information on specific flights, etc).

For searching e-mail addresses you might try:
http://www.worldemail.com/
To get your own maps or travel directions, try:
http://www.mapquest.com/
(but be aware, when you get to the street level maps your location
marker is usually off by a couple of blocks, or more).
I think the air travel URL at Yahoo is http://www.yahoo.com/Recreation/Travel/Air_Travel/

Here's a site I found on Parenting. It has chat areas and links to
other resources, as well as daily features. I'd like to see this linked
to the Parents Resources sub-page in the Education InfoCenter (or
elsewhere, if applicable):

Home Schooling Information -
