You're right - they appear to have gone out of "fashion". Knee socks
used to be standard with shorts, especially for hikers (and especially
in Europe). They are still used with high rubber boots ("wellies"),
and also always worn with kilts. Find a scottish apparel shop (though
they may be avalable only in wool). I expected to find them in "outdoors"
catalogs, but they are not offered by L.L.Bean, Campmor, REI or
Cabela's.

Well, they haven't gone out of fashion with me. I still look for them, buy
them and try to wear them all winter long under slacks. Only I like the
warmest possible kind with as much wool content as possible. I think
the last place I found some was up at the Oulet Mall up north on 23. I
forget the name. They have a "Socks Galore" store and I found a few. I like
them to go up to my knees and I have pairs in almost every color (at least
in the colors of my slacks.)

Rane, did you try calling REI, et al.? Sometimes they have things
that they don't put in the catalogs. Seems such an item should be
available all over the place...hmmm

No, I *have* all the high knee socks I need - but popcorn might.

Alice found knee socks in The Vermont Country Store catalog: P.O. Box
3000 Manchester Ctr., VT 05255-3000. (802) 363-2400. They list them
in cotton or wool, most sizes 9-11, various colors (eggplant, oatmeal...
oh yes, also wht, cam, grn, red, pur, nav, etc). $8.95/pair (3pr/$24).
