Got a Kensington Turbo Mouse trackball from Egghead a year or two ago. It
was a fair price, which actually seems to have been staying somewhat consistent
in the intervening period. (BTW, ver. 4.0)
No pushy sales people, decent service. Manufacturer has quite nicely
handled warranty repair/replacement.

Is there anyplace in Ann Arbor that carries Macs besides The
Learning Center & Ulrichs (for software)?

#6 of 81 by tsty on Thu Dec 22 22:47:11 1994:

yep - Egghead does, over 1/3 of the store, i believe.

#7 of 81 by rcurl on Thu Dec 22 22:47:46 1994:

Office Max, Best Buy, Office Depot, ...any more?

#8 of 81 by mwarner on Thu Dec 22 23:45:48 1994:

Borders - But I didn't much care for their full retail pricing.

I'm a PC kind of guy. I've called around to the other places
sometimes when I needed to buy something, but I always wind up going to
CCS, down on Boardwalk, off Eisenhower, not far from the Briarwood Mall.
747-8440. No, I don't work there, and don't get paid a promotional fee.
I do have several friends who work there, including part owner and general
manager, Jemmie Wang.
I haven't found anyone who beats CCS prices on anything yet.
When I have a problem, they take care of me.
They're knowledgeable about what they sell.
They have the stuff in stock that I need when I'm ready to buy. And
they have a 2nd one in stock in case I break my 1st one (heh -- or more
realistically, if the 1st didn't work; I rarely make mistakes. (-: )

That new(ish) place on Platt and Washtenaw (also book store) has
about 1/4 store for Mac stuff.

#11 of 81 by danr on Fri Dec 23 03:54:54 1994:

Best Buy seems to have some pretty good prices on Pentium systems. They
were selling an Acer with a CD-ROM and sound card for around $2400.

#12 of 81 by rogue on Fri Dec 23 05:43:41 1994:

No one else in Michigan has 2.15GB hard disks for $899.
No one near Washtenaw County has the inventory and selection CCS has.
No one else in Michigan has 4-8GB Sony SCSI-2 DAT for $769.
No one in Washtenaw County and few in Michigan has the selection of high-end
   computer equipment that CCS has.

There is a reason why CCS is now the largest computer-only vendor in
Washtenaw County after being in a commercial location for only 1.2 years.
Price. Selection. Support.

I've had some really good experiences with MCRS on South Industrial. I
bought a computer there almost three years ago and have returned for stuff
occasionally since then. I have never had any problems dealing with them,
and have always found them to be incredibly helpful (my current problems
stem from the one piece of my computer that I didn't buy from them). As I
prepare to put together a new computer in the next couple of weeks, I will
be buying from them anything I need that they have in stock for a price
reasonably close to CCS's price.

#14 of 81 by mju on Fri Dec 23 06:14:37 1994:

Egghead has lots of Mac software, but they lose in hardware. I went
there trying to find a Mac modem cable, and they didn't have any. Ended
up at Best Buy down the street.

#15 of 81 by rcurl on Fri Dec 23 06:32:16 1994:

Don't overlook mailorder, which beats most of the local retail prices
(sometimes just by not charging tax, though). You get 2-nd day air
for little charge at many of them.

#16 of 81 by mwarner on Fri Dec 23 07:32:01 1994:

(I have a friend who ordered software from MacConnection at 12:30 a.m. and
the package arrived early in the afternoon that same day, from N.H. $3
shipping with otherwise discount prices somewhat below Egghead.)

I don't know that mailorder is an Arbor Area Computer Store, however.
What else is around?

#17 of 81 by rcurl on Fri Dec 23 08:11:51 1994:

mailorder has many locations in ann arbor. They are usually painted
blue, with a eagle or something on them.

#18 of 81 by lori on Fri Dec 23 16:28:00 1994:

Whatever you do - do not fall for the cheap deals that catalog warehouses
offer. We purchased our 486 from one of these and ended up schlepping the cpu
all the way to Denver on our vacation just to get a simple powerpack changed
out under warranty.

#19 of 81 by carl on Fri Dec 23 22:43:57 1994:

My computer came from PACE Warehouse (remember the good old days?)
and I got a pretty good deal on it. Since then, I've bought a bunch
of bits and pieces at CCS and been very happy with what I got. The
sales people were helpful and knowledgeable, and the prices were
right. The next computer I buy will be from CCS.

#20 of 81 by raven on Fri Dec 23 22:44:08 1994:

No, no that's an intel problem you're talking about :-). You
know intel of the our Pentium chips can't handle division fame :-)
Also where can I get Mac hardware in town?

#21 of 81 by rogue on Sat Dec 24 00:25:29 1994:

#13: MCRS is very respectable. I know the owner and am friends with the
Stauders. However, they simply do not have the selection, inventory and
     prices CCS has.

#15: Check out #18.

#18: Call CCS next time.

#19: Cool. We'll take care of you.

#22 of 81 by jerryb on Sat Dec 24 01:13:58 1994:

We bought our Mac at the Learning Center after checking several places
including CompUSA. I found the prices comparable, and the service
superior. For me, the after-sale assistance has become more important
as part of my decision of where to buy.

#23 of 81 by chelsea on Sat Dec 24 01:28:52 1994:

Both of our computers were purchased mail order (Ares and Gateway)
prior to CCS opening. But since the initial purchases all peripheral
replacements have been through Jemmie, with complete satisfaction.
So when a good friend who knows nothing about computers asked where
she should buy her first, I referred her to CCS. Scary, sending a newbie
into the big bad world of computer retail. But here it is, two months later,
and she is very pleased with the machine, the price, and especially
the service. I'll not hesitate to recommend CSS again.

#24 of 81 by chelsea on Sat Dec 24 01:29:14 1994:

Er, CCS.

#25 of 81 by steve on Sat Dec 24 02:38:16 1994:

I've had several friends order things from Technology Partners,
and they've been very pleased. Probably the price isn't the absolutely
lowest, but they're helpful when something goes wrong.

#26 of 81 by rogue on Sat Dec 24 03:36:52 1994:

#23: In addition, your friend was a beginner and we still helped him through.
We thank you and John for your continued support.

#27 of 81 by omni on Sat Dec 24 07:26:13 1994:

MacWarehouse is where I usually buy my software, or Egghead, depending
on who has the best price, as for hardware, you've got to be kidding :0

A customer told me that Ulrich's is not going to carry computers anymore.
Just software.

#30 of 81 by kentn on Sat Dec 24 16:33:15 1994:

Ulrich's Electronics is a good place to get academic-discount software,
and I think they sell some printers, modems, and misc. cabling and
such. The last time I was in there (about a month ago) they said they
do not sell computers; the ones you see there are for demonstrating
software (although it looks to me like the salespeople use them to play
games most of the time).

Re #26: I've bought several peripherals from CCS and have been quite
pleased with the products and service.

Anyone need an industrial computer? The company I work for makes nice ones...
nevermind...

#33 of 81 by other on Tue Dec 27 04:08:30 1994:

Someone mentioned Computer Renaissance, in the Colonnade center to me. Is
anyone here familiar with them, and their pricing, service record, etc.?

#34 of 81 by tnt on Tue Dec 27 05:36:27 1994:

Prices seemed kinda high for used (but clean) equipment, most of which was
486sxs & a variety of 386 platforms, & some Macs.

#35 of 81 by jep on Tue Dec 27 08:03:22 1994:

Prices at Computer Renaissance seemed high to me, too. I tried to
buy a 30 MB hard drive for a non-profit at the NEW Center; they needed
something cheap and small. I think the price was $50, and the warranty
was 30 days or some such. Instead I got them a 270 MB drive from CCS
for $180.
