Grex Consumer Item 2: Looking for new Dentist.
Entered by gregc on Wed Mar 9 18:40:35 UTC 1994:

[I've "teleported" this item from the winter agora conference to the
consumer conference. -Valerie]

Not sure if this is the best conference to put this in, but what the hey...

I'm looking for a new Dentist. Can anybody reccomend a decent one in the
Ann Arbor area? I hate playing phone book roulette. I have a lowpain
threshhold in this area and am interested in someone who is not afraid
to use sufficient pain killer.

The people at Meijer's are decent, believe it or not. I had
my wisdom teeth extracted there, and they really did a good job.
And no, you don't pay for it at the Meijer checkout. ;-)
   It surprised me.

DON"T go to the U-M Dental School, unless you specifically request that a
staff person do the dirty deeds. I had a friend (pbmax) go there for a
wisdom tooth extraction, and he's currently unable to feel most of his
face. This has really put a cramp in his love life, not to mention his
shaving habits.

I went to U-M dental school to have my wisdom tooth out and I have no
complaints. A lot less pain, bleeding, and swelling than they told me
there would be. Not too expensive or inconvenient. And I didn't mind
having the doc show and tell what he was doing to the 5 students in the
room. But #0 was asking for a dentist, not an oral surgeon, right?

U-M is not a good place for a dentist. Too complicated to get yourself
examined and assigned and I don't know what-all if all you need is
checkup, teeth cleaning, and filling. For that, I recommend Dr. Slade on
Hewitt near Washtenaw in Ypsi.

My doctor (Dr. Kress) is a very nice person. Give his office a call
sometime.

Um, Dr. Wiliams I switched from him to a new dentist about 5 years ago but he
still sends me birthday cards. =)

The U-M dental school can do reasonable work, but getting approved and
scheduled is a major pain.

#10 of 43 by srw on Thu Mar 10 01:02:54 1994:

I go to Dr. Young at 1616 Packard (corner of Henry).

#11 of 43 by remmers on Thu Mar 10 03:51:11 1994:

For the past four years I've been going to Robert Pelzar. His office
is on Washington St. opposite the Tally Hall parking structure.
Young guy, very laid back, very painless, very attentive to the
patient's comfort level. Tells good jokes too!

For a short check-up, you get a short joke. For a longer job, you
get a longer joke. But every time I see him, I get at least one
good new joke. He never repeats himself.

I don't regard a visit to the dentist as a relaxing experience, but
Pelzar makes it as pleasant as I think it's possible for it to be.

I like Dr. Brian Merkel. The first time I went there, I saw a little
hand sewn pillow in the shape of a tooth that said "Painless Dentist."
I asked him if that was true, and he said, "Sure."

Since then I've had a root canal, two crowns and a bunch of fillings.
None of them hurt--and he does good work. And he has current magazines.

His office is on Packard and the number is 434-6255.

Make that Krasnoff! He is an excellent dentist.

I go to Dr. Giltrow. Have since 1964, so we're moderately well acquainted.
He hums as he drills. Dr. Cocco a newer dentist in his office.

Well, if you _still_ need any suggestions after all those, my whole family has
been going to Dr. Dan Kennedy for ~10-15 yrs. No complaints at all.
His goal is to give you a maintenance free mouth. His partner, Dr. Chris
Marzonie is also A-OK.
They are currently in the Wolverine Tower but will be moving soon,
because the U-M bought the Wolverine Tower and is making it clear that
they do not like being a landlord, they want the whole building for
themselves..

We use Dr Michael Hellie -- he's on Packard. My wife is terrified of having
anyone get near here neck area (besides me, that is). She said he is the
best Dentist she'd ever had help her deal with that problem.

Though, we've nver had any surgery or cavaties yet, so I can't comment on
if he is liberal with the gas or not.

I just had two crowns installed today by Dr. C. T. Chan in East Lansing.
I won't go into detail since I assume that's a bit far afield.

Ouch, my aunt had this dentist who, after doing the root canal, realized it was
the wrong tooth! =-O agggghhhhh!

I go to doctor Daily, she is a great dentist as long as you dont mind that
she asks you questions while you've all thos little probes and miniature
icepicks in your mouth.

I'd like to put in a good word for U of M's dental school. They do
wonderful work for almost nothing, but it does take forever. About
ten years ago I needed a lot of old fillings replaced, a new cap,
and new bridge work. I ended up replacing all of the old silver
fillings with gold inlays instead as they're supposed to last a
lifetime. All told it took two years of weekly, sometimes twice
weekly appointments of between 2 and 4 hours. I worked it in
and I ended up paying only for the materials, something just over
$500. I have been told this would have cost about $8000 if a
I could have found a private dentist who could have done the work.

The dental school isn't for everyone but it's a great service for
those without the funds to go elsewhere or with unusual dental
problems.

I now go to the U of M Dental Faculty clinic where I see Dr. Fitzgerald,
one of the staff I met during those clinic days. The Faculty clinic
is a good way to go even if you've never been part of the dental school's
clinic.

True. At the dental school, they're supposed to get it *right*. A real
world dentist might not bother.

Well, that might make me want to go there, Valerie. Thanks. Perhaps
I should bring a clandistine cam corder.

I can reccomend Dr. Guenther. She used to work with Dr. Giltrow, but has since
started a new practice with Dr. Donaldson. They're located near the corner of
Packard and Eisenhower. She is very particular on details, and the three
crowns she has installed match the rest of my teeth perfectly. Very profes-
sional, also does well with minimizing discomfort.

I just got my teeth cleaned this afternoon. I'm reasonably happy with my
dentist, except that he's started selling unrelated products like portable
security alarms and air filters, and I'm not sure that's 100% proper to
be pitching at his pateints like that.

(And I just found that :s/oldstring/newstring/ doesn't work for changes)
