Grex Consumer Item 102: WARNING: Scamspams with area codes split off from 809
Entered by jmrubin on Sun May 2 00:33:45 UTC 1999:

If you get junk email telling you to call an area code
like 473 or 664 DON'T do it. Area code 809 has split
and scamspammers are using these new area codes to steal.

Hey, but isn't that what happens everytime you get a pizza
coupon on your door? ;-)

Oddly enough, they have stopped tying coupons to porch railings, at least in
my neighborhood, ever since I called and asked the police to send someone out
to explain the local littering laws. The coupons did not give the police no.
You are right, though, I do call junk mailers to ask them to stop. In the
case of junk email, I might send back email.

They figured out the solution to that a long time ago; the originating
address is almost never valid.
