Grex Comics Item 6: Batman!
Entered by amoco on Wed Sep 27 02:57:18 UTC 1995:

Batman
Oops. I'll try thatagain. If oyu like Batman, you hjave a MORAL OBLIGATION to
read the DARK KNIGHT RETURNS by Frank Miller, with Klaus Janson and Lynn
Varely. This DC product is MUCH better than most Batman comics! Even despisors
of Batman will love it! (amoco is really hooked on this) Keep in mid, it's a
graphic novel, available in both soft and hard covers. Dunnununununu BATMAN!

This is the one from 1985, right? There isn't some brand new
"Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel out, I hope... >8)

#2 of 61 by leebru on Tue Oct 10 05:13:05 1995:

It's perhaps the greatest comic of all time. It is OLD news, however.

#3 of 61 by orinoco on Sat Oct 28 19:33:53 1995:

<orinoco seconds that...if anybody is still reading this...>

#4 of 61 by scott on Sat Oct 28 19:38:21 1995:

Still some lurkers in the conference. :)

#5 of 61 by robh on Sat Oct 28 19:43:33 1995:

Probably several hundred times as many lurkers as posters. >8)

#6 of 61 by biohazar on Mon Jun 24 13:24:11 1996:

yep, i'm still lurking. I would have to say, if you like Dark Knight Returns,
then you'll love Batman Year One. This was also written byFrank Miller but
drawn byDavid Mazzucchelli (who did a beautiful job). Even though I don't like
the idea of rewriting origins, it worked really well. I also like
Batman-Grendel by Matt Wagner. The sequel is coming out this summer. I don't
really buy Batman normally (consitering the Knight Quest stuff and high costs
of comics these days) I still enjoy the cartoon. Coquicadently I hate the
movies. The first one with Micheal Keaton was good, but it just went down the
tube (exspecialy with Tim Burten not producting ...Forever). What's the deal
with the nipples on the costumes?

#7 of 61 by pez on Mon Jun 24 16:42:27 1996:

i read the other day that the Batgirl costume (which will contain Alicia
Silverstone) is going to also have nipples on it, weird...

#8 of 61 by biohazar on Wed Jun 26 10:26:20 1996:

aaaaaaaah... I know I should reply to this, but I'm not quite sure what to
say. I do think that's kinda sick.
Plus, what are they thinking about putting Alicia Silverstone in the movie
anyways? She can't act and she's otterly repulsing. I can't see why she in
Hollywood at all.

#9 of 61 by pez on Wed Jun 26 23:25:50 1996:

There are a lot of people in Hollywood for no reason...
I'm trying not to name anyone....

#10 of 61 by biohazar on Mon Jul 1 15:43:04 1996:

talking about Dar KNight Returns, it will return again this Nov. for it's
tenth anniversary. Dc will offer a signed reprint, with sketchbook, four mini
posters, and the original script from issue #1 (you can also get a less
expense version without the signture). They are also putting out a statue
designed by Frank Miller and two posters.

#11 of 61 by mappy on Tue Jul 2 23:55:12 1996:

ok ok...about this alicia silverstone thing....how can they do this??? There
are far better actresses out there that could portray Batgirl well...not as
someone who is a completely brainless twit with a nipple costume...feh! And
george clooney??? sure the guy can act <he proved it in ER and From Dusk Till
Dawn> but batman??? nope! ya need a dark broody guy...someone with a bit of
mystery. Sure, michael keeton was ok...val kilmer was not...and i dont think
george clooney is gonna be any better. I swear, batman is turning into nothing
but a starfest...not really caring about the mood and essence of the whole
batman story. hmmmm...who should play batman? and who should play batgirl?how
bout danny elfman (the red hair should be black for the movie) for batman or
shit...how bout trent reznor/ he is a dark, broody guy...never seen 'im act,
but hey he has that depressive feel to him. and for the batgirl, how bout
gillian anderson from X-files (heck if they put out a Ghost <dark horse
comics> movie, she would play a good Ghost too, and she has the right aura
or essence of batgirl without the wimpyness and airheadedness of alicia
silverstone...heck, the stunt double will probably be in the movie more than
she is).

#12 of 61 by biohazar on Wed Jul 3 23:46:50 1996:

Okay, I agree with most of what you said. Silverstone and Cloony suck as comic
book characters. Why do they even need stars to put out a movie. I think it
detracts from the storyline (I never think, Andy is in trouble, I think, Tom
Hanks is in trouble). I have found that no name actors do better jobs filling
the role, insted the roll filling the star. Trent would make a good Dark
Broody Guy tm (I wonder where you got that from (: he-he!) but I think that
Batman has one thing that Trent (NIN) Reznor doesn't have... hope. As for
Gillian Anderson, yes she would make a fantastic Ghost, but she is too old
for the Batgirl (note: she isn't called Batwoman).

#13 of 61 by pez on Thu Jul 4 00:23:34 1996:

there is a batwoman though..
I agree that Clooney shouldn't be Batman.. i know! bring back Adam West!!
Yeah.. that'll work.. he's just a little too old, but.. oh nevermind...

#14 of 61 by biohazar on Mon Jul 8 20:22:44 1996:

Adam West has got to be the wrose thing to happen to Batman. If anybody thinks
that comics are anything like the 70's TV show, they are sadly mistaken.

#15 of 61 by robh on Mon Jul 8 21:26:13 1996:

Actually, the 60's TV show (not 70's) was a reasonably accurate
portrayal of what the Batman comics were like in the late 50's.

#16 of 61 by pez on Mon Jul 8 22:19:02 1996:

Yeah. Batman hasn't always been a dark comic book. I suggest reading The Tales
of the Dark Knight: Batman's First Fifty Years for a look at the evolving
Bativerse. What's wrong with Adam West anyway...?

#17 of 61 by carson on Wed Jul 10 13:31:09 1996:

Pez cites a pretty good reference. David, remind me to lend it to you.

#18 of 61 by pez on Wed Jul 10 21:05:47 1996:

Thank you carson :)

#19 of 61 by biohazar on Thu Jul 11 22:51:44 1996:

Okay, I would love to read it. I would also get my hands on your SiP tpb
sometime, Carson. So, is there anything you would like to read in return? I'll
mail you later.

#20 of 61 by dbassman on Mon Dec 16 01:29:18 1996:

Actually , on the idea fo batman being a dark comic, it seems to me that it
only became soo after the first movie came out. Maybe im mistaken, somebody
hit me if im wrong:) What's wrong with alicia silverstone as batgirl, cindy?

#21 of 61 by bio on Mon Dec 16 02:55:07 1996:

actually, batman as a dark comic started in the first issue, back then Batman
was more on the egde killing people and everything, but that changed when they
added Robin to tone Bats down and to have someone the readers could contect
to. At the begining of WWII a lot of the artist went to war leaving comics
to the hand of very humorous people. The comics in the War were very silly.
That was why the 50's TV show was very silly. Batman got semi-serous when Neal
Adams took over the book, but in '80 two comics came to the indestry that
changed the look of comics, Watchmen and Batman, The Dark Knight Returns.
Frank Miller did the dark Batman with was later protrayed in the movie. So
it was Batman: The Dark Knight Returns that started the current dark comic,
not the movie.

#22 of 61 by robh on Mon Dec 16 02:59:52 1996:

Yes, Batman has had dark periods, and not-so-dark periods, many
times in his long career. The very early Batman stories I've
read were among the darkest of the lot.

#23 of 61 by de on Wed Dec 18 17:46:03 1996:

The Dark Knight Returns was the comic that got me hooked on comics to begin
with. It was an excellent portrayal of a man torn by obsession and revenge
plus it was set in a more modern and realistic context. Since then, the
Batman comics have a had a greater tendency towards deeper stories that
place Batman in more ethically challenging situations than "How does he
defeat The Joker this week?" Dark Knight Returns led the way for comics
to mature with their audience.

#24 of 61 by biohazar on Wed Dec 18 18:36:55 1996:

wow, all these new people put life back in this confer... I can't wait to see
this place when the new movie comes out.

#25 of 61 by pez on Wed Dec 18 20:40:32 1996:

yes, but do you want to see the new movie...?

#26 of 61 by de on Thu Dec 19 18:41:26 1996:

I'm a sucker. I'll pay my $7.00 to see it. I can't help it.

#27 of 61 by bio on Fri Dec 20 18:05:22 1996:

I'm not really looking twards it too much, but I have to see it. Plus, it's
only $4.25 for me :)
I am more interested in seeing the Batman anmated movie that will come
out at the same time. Now that will rock!

#28 of 61 by dbassman on Mon Dec 23 19:04:26 1996:

Does anyone know who's the voice of Batgirl in the animated series?

#31 of 61 by pez on Sun Feb 23 21:39:30 1997:

I saw a preview for the new Batman movie at The Empire Strikes Back the other
night... here's my thoughts on what i saw:
Clooney as Batman- Sucks! He just looks wrong. The chin's too small or
something.. and the funny way his mouth moves....
the new Bat symbol is cool.. (Robin's symbol over Batman's..)
the nipples are on Batgirl's costume..
Robin and Batgirl and Batman have a whole family thing going..
Arnold as Mr. Freeze- AWESOME! he just looks good bald.. :P
Uma as Poison Ivy also looks good ;) Elle MacPherson (sp?) plays somebody
in this movie.. not suree who.. Batman's love interest #4?
the villains are cool.. the heroes.. not really..

#32 of 61 by bio on Sun Feb 23 23:34:32 1997:

I too saw that preview at Empire and I have to disagree with most of what you
are saying. I think this will be the worse movie EVER. The casting SUCKS
majorly and they don't even care about the actual storie or characters
anymore. Lets go on the list of stars...
Batman by George Clooney: SUCKS! His attitude is totaly wrong and he doesn't
even look like Batman.
Mr. Freeze by Arnold: They should have stayed with Patick Steward because
Arnold is the WORSE Mr. Freeze. First the fucked with the costume, taking away
the helmut and glasses. Do the even try to put a reverb on his voice or
anything... nope, it's just plain old "Yaaa! I'm Aaahnold." Does he even play
like the character... nope, there is no actinmg in this movie, you should know
this by now.
Posion Ive by Uma Thuman: Sucks! That character is all wrong and the costume
looks more like something from the TV show.
Bane by some guy: Well, I don't know about that acting the actor is really
a WWF westler and he doesn't have much time in the movie. What I doi know is
that he is only Posion Ive's bodyguard.
Batgirl by <cringe> Alica Silverstone: Can I tell you for the hundreth time
I hate Alica Silverstone. She can't act. She makes Batgirl a complete ditz.
Okay, they also messed up the character by making her the ward of Alfred
insted being Gordon's duaghter and of course she find the batcave (they really
got to lock the door).
Batmans fiancee by Elle: Sigh, when will Batman learn that he wears a mask
becaause he is try to keep his identity a secert, not to impress the babes.
Other all this is NOT batman. They change the story the characters, and
the costumes and it's just not Batman anymore. I for one am not going to see
it in the movie theatre even for $4.25. This is purely a $1.50 video rental.
If they had Frank Miller (he did write Robcop 2 & 3) write his Batman Year
One into a budget movie with no stars, it would be 100 times better.

#33 of 61 by pez on Mon Feb 24 22:12:14 1997:

you should know by now that Arnold has no actual acting ability and will never
lose his accent.. i think i meant that Arnold *looked* awesome with that
suit.. unfortunately they are basing all the Batman movies on Big Names
instead of A Story.. of course that can be found in places besides Batman
movies.. and does Batman HAVE to have a love interest in every movie? I
wonder if there will be a flashback where it was really Mr. Freeze that killed
Bruce's parents (The Joker and Two-Face BOTH killed his parents according to
"Batman" and "Batman Forever"..

#34 of 61 by bio on Mon Feb 24 23:13:22 1997:

As for the dead parents... Batman's parents were killed by Joker in the first
movie while Robin's parents were killed by Two-Face in the third. I have seen
Arnold act though and this is not one of those times.

#35 of 61 by pez on Tue Feb 25 00:31:30 1997:

but didn't Bruce have a flashback in "Batman Forever" where he 'remembered'
that Two-Face killed his parents?

#36 of 61 by bio on Wed Feb 26 02:02:00 1997:

I don't remember, but it doesn't mean it didn't happen, but their was a
flashback on how two face was born which was way after his parents died. Two
Face wasn't a villian when Bruce was a child.

#37 of 61 by pez on Wed Feb 26 16:48:53 1997:

hmm.. i've only seen the movie once so i don't remember much about it..

#38 of 61 by bio on Wed Mar 5 08:27:53 1997:

DC is putting out four books on the heals of the movie... Bane, Batgirl, Mr.
Freeze, and Posion Ivy.

Joel Schumacher has already signed on to direct the next Batman film (that's
the fivth movie); no definite decisions on villains yet, but the Mad Hatter,
King Tut, Egghead, and the Scarecrow are all possibilities. George Clooney
and Chris O'Donnell will also return.

#39 of 61 by otaking on Wed Mar 5 13:02:31 1997:

They're running out of popular villains, aren't they?

I'll look for the 4 Batman movie books in bargain bins in 3 months.
