The $750 is a pretty low figure if you're looking for a well-kept, spacious apartment or house. How long are you willing to drive to get to work?
Also, where do you work? If you look in my area, Clinton, 25 miles southwest of Ann Arbor, you can find apartments and even houses for rent for that kind of money. It won't work well for you if you need to get to Detroit every day.
There are lots of specious apartments in the SE Michigan that are $750/mo or less. I would guess that none of them are located in prime areas though.
When I lived in the Ridgewood Apartments on Carpenter they were in that price range, but the rent has probably gone up in the intervening years. The complex had a slightly dumpy air to it and was surrounded by strip malls. It was safe enough, if you're not intimidated by Mexican immigrants playing loud mariachi music in the parking lot. This was five or six years ago at this point, though, so things may have changed. Broadband was available and utilities were fairly cheap due to gas heat and hot water.
My next door neighbors just moved out. If the place is fixed up by Sept 1 it will be available relatively cheap ($500/month plus heat?). One bedroom at the back of the house, nobody directly overhead, nice yard that you can garden in, but crazy neighbor in front who complains about noises from the bathroom (and smokes). This is the house next to mine. The apartment next to mine in the same house (also nobody overhead) is a large efficiency and will be maybe $450 (or less, make an offer). Neither of these places is pretty but he keeps things working. I would love to have friendly nonsmokers as neighbors. There is also a larger one bedroom in the house next door upstairs, with no storm windows. The landlord might put some on if he got a renter because he has to pay heat if he does not. This one has a nice view and cross ventilation. House is about 1860, high ceilings, potential. Quiet neighbors. Cats seem to be allowed. These places may all get repainted and they all have their own furnaces (gas) and gas stoves. The biggest one has a tub, the other two showers. They are not advertised. I have been there since 1985.
