Grex Classified Item 1151: Classified conference policy question
Entered by gull on Wed Mar 31 21:35:19 UTC 2004:

Quick policy question: Are pointers to ebay auctions allowed here? I've
been refraining from posting about any of my auctions because I wasn't sure
about the etiquette.

It doesn't seem to be a problem to me. You are selling things and by
citing e-bay listings you are making them available to grexers.
That's what this item is for.

I'd like to see one item, in which you consistently post your ebay pointers.
That way, I can forget the whole item, and not have to continually forget new
stuff.

Why do you make a distinction between an offering by a grexer here or on
ebay? It might be something you want.  8^}

I read grex regularly. I don't use ebay. If it is a pointer to ebay, it's
a waste of time for me. If it is merely a double posting, and I can make the
purchase without going to ebay, that's worth a separate item. If it's a
"hey,l I've got this great thing for sale but you have to buy it through ebay"
then keep it in a single item.

Seems like it might be useful, since I only check eBay for very specific
things. Plus it'll be for local items, from somebody I already trust.

Would it not make more sense to post it on grex for a week first and if
nobody local wants it, then post on eBay?

This response has been erased.

One reason for a person posting an item on e-bay is to auction it off,
not sell it for a fixed price. And, of course, there is a much wider
audience on e-bay than on grex for an auction.

yes, a single item where the URL can be posted and which can be forgotten by
those who don't want to deal with ebay auctions is exactly what I'm
suggesting.

Okay, if I post any auctions I'll create a single item to contain them,
and erase each post after the auction concludes. Would that be acceptable?

#11 of 22 by cmcgee on Sat Apr 3 01:56:23 2004:

That works for me. But why not just enter "item sold on (date) for (dollars)?

#12 of 22 by scott on Sat Apr 3 12:49:09 2004:

It's perfectly fine with me.

Re resp:11: It seems like erasing the posts instead would create less
clutter for someone reading the item for the first time. It's analogous
to how regular items here are erased when they're no longer useful.

*nod* whichever is fine by me.

the fw has no opinion on this. an ebay pointer to grex might be interesting,
however <g>.

Why were items here renumbered? That makes it harder to find items
cited previously in agora. In addition, the numbering jumped from 256 last
to 1161 last. Why?

#17 of 22 by tsty on Fri Apr 28 22:43:17 2006:

nothing was renumbered ... however a multitude of items were removed
since they were already taken care of, or 5-ish yrs old, whichever.

were shortened.
