American composer David Diamond died June 13. He was 89. He wrote some of the loveliest & most listenable music of any American. I think the 20th century composer he was closest to was Vaughan Williams, although his music is American to the bone. The first piece of his I remember hearing was Rounds for String Orchestra, which remains one of my favorite pieces of American music to this day. Now the last remaining giant of that generation is Elliott Carter, who would be 97 this year (if he's still alive).
