This list, uncensored, is the concerts I'm most interested in. The full list contains lots of faculty recitals and theater shows: this shorter list just contains the larger concerts in Hill Auditorium. (Part of the reason I'm interested this year is that after this school year, Hill Auditorium will be closed for 18 months.) <--------->September<---------> 25 Tue. University Symphony Orchestra Hill Auditorium 8:00 PM Kenneth Kiesler, conductor. The USO will perform Haydn's Symphony No. 100 (Military Symphony) and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 12 (1917/Lenin). <--------->October<---------> 2 Tue. University Philharmonia Orchestra Hill Auditorium, 8:00 PM Jonathan Shames, conductor. Concert will include Beethoven's "Coriolan=20 Overture," Prokofiev's "Scenes from Romeo and Juliet," and Dvor=E1k's Symphony No. 6. 3 Wed. Concert Band Hill Auditorium, 8:00 PM Steven D. Davis, conductor. Concert will include "Awayday" by Gorb, "Divertissement d'=E9t=E9" by Casterede, Symphony No. 6 by Persichetti, "Canzon septimi toni a 8-no. 2" by Gabrieli, "Marche Miniature" by Bird, "The Courtley Dances" by Benjamin Britten/Jan Bach, "Country Gardens" by Grainger, and "Shepherds Hey" by Grainger. 6 Sat. Brave New Works Concert Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM The Brave New Works ensemble consists of advanced graduate students and recent graduates of UM who present the music of living composers. Program will include music of and will be conducted by UM Professor Emeritus Leslie Bassett. 7 Sun. Men's Glee Club, Women's Glee Club, and the Smith College Glee Club Hill Auditorium, 3:00 PM Jerry Blackstone, conductor. The University Men's and Women's Glee Clubs along with the Glee Club from Smith College (in Northampton, Massachusetts) will perform Brahms' Requiem. Tickets required. $5 at the door or by calling the Men's Glee Club Office at 764-1448. 16 Tue. University Symphony Orchestra Hill Auditorium, 8:00 PM Kenneth Kiesler, conductor. The USO will perform Barber's "Second Essay," Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), and UM Professor Emeritus Leslie Bassett's Concerto for Alto Saxophone, featuring Clifford Leaman. 23 Tue. University Choir Hill Auditorium, 8:00 PM Sandra Snow, conductor. Works will include Vaughan Williams' "Five Mystical Songs," Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis De Deo, and selections by Whitacre, Daley, and Grau that feature poetry relating to earth and nature. 28 Sun. Halloween Concert: University Symphony Orchestra and the University Philharmonia Orchestra=20 Hill Auditorium, 4:30 & 8:00 PM Tickets required. $8 (Main Floor/First Balcony); $5 (Second Balcony). Re #3 - Gustav Meier's not conducting at the Halloween concert anymore? I knew that he had "officially" retired, but I had thought that he came back each year as a guest conductor for the Halloween concert. I guess I was wrong.
I'm playing in the October 3 concert, so if you come to it you'll score a free Grexer sighting as well as getting to hear some great music!
