Grex Classicalmusic Item 29: The medley item
Entered by albaugh on Fri Mar 6 17:52:19 UTC 1998:

Use this item for things that don't belong in any other items, and you don't
fell like creating a new item for something ad hoc.

Does anyone have *reliable* sources on the internet (Web preferred) for
clipart for music-related things, specifically instruments and marching bands?
My forays into Alta Vista haven't been overwhelmingly successful...

Last night, I discovered that Ravel's Bolero is exactly as long as the
trip from my home on the west side of Ann Arbor to the east side of Ann
Arbor via 94. This morning, I listened to the snare drum, ignoring (as
much as possible) everything else. I really couldn't believe that that's
all there was, for fifteen minutes:
        da-da-da-dum da-da-da-dum dum dum
        da-da-da-dum da-da-da-da-da-da-da-dum

Now to listen to the other instruments the same way. (At one point, the
trumpets were playing along with the snare drum.)

You left out two da's at the end there.

da-da-da-dum, da-da-da-dum dum dum,
da-da-da-dum, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-dum

It's actually in a very slow 3-beat rhythm,
divided into two sets of triplets per beat:

beat 1 & 2 & 3 &
triplets 123123123123123123
snare drum 1231 1231 1

beat 1 & 2 & 3 &
triplets 123123123123123123
snare drum 1 1231 123123123

beat 1 etc.
triplets 1 etc.
snare drum 1 etc.

Thanks. That should help me understand the rest of it. :)

(My brother says I have no sense for the beat, my doctor says I don't hear
the middle frequencies so well, and I still enjoy listening to music.)

I once went to a concert performance of _Bolero_ at which the conductor
put the snare drum and its drummer out in front, like a virtuoso
soloist. Considering that the snare holds the whole thing together, I
can't call it totally undeserved.
