Last night I was in Macon, Georgia, driving back from St. Petersburg. I stopped to get a room and every motel room within miles was taken up by members of some gargantuan street rod show going on down there. I have never seen so many hot rods and also rare stock cars in my life. At the Holiday Inn, all the hot rodders took the furniture into the parking lots and they were having car parades at 10:00 at night. Reving up the engines, honking horns, etc. Whatta Zoo. I even saw a 1956 Pontiac Safari wagon. Anyone remember these? They were similar to a Chevy Nomad, but on the Pontiac body style. (pretty rare).

I've seen the Nomad, but only in the movies.. specifically "Stand and Deliver" cool car
Nobody can accuse the 1955-57 Chevy Nomad/Pontiac Safari as being boring station wagons!
To those of you who do not know what the Nomad or the Safari is, they are expensive sports model station wagons produced by GM from 1955-1957. These models, Chevy Nomad for instance, are produced to be the equivalent of a BelAire 2-dr hardtop, in a two-door very fancy station wagon. Lots of chrome, highly sporty interior, great lines, big engine, . .. the works!
Ok, I see now. The problem I had here is that the "Pontiac Safari" I was familiar with was the *huge* 5-door station wagon that GM made through the 70's into the early 80's. This car was the very definition of "boat".
Yep, once Pontiac dropped the Safari "Sports Station Wagon," they used the name for their basic Queen Mary standard full sized wagon. But if you ever see a 55-57 Nomad or Safari, you would have to be "anti-car" to not like these machines.
