Grex Auction Item 27: MovieCds! [frozen]
Entered by mooncat on Wed Jul 2 17:56:35 UTC 2003:

Donated by Chad C. (fuzzball)

these are movie CD's, like dvd's but like really old versions.
you just put them in your CD-ROM (may work in DVD-ROM) and they play
the movie. They are quite old and the discs are in great condition.
they workwell in somewhat older pc's they tend to not work as well in
newage fast computers.... since you only need windows 3.1 or 95......
but there cool anyway. i have the following titles:

Seven starring Brad pitt and Morgan Freeman rated R

Friday starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker rated R

and,

Lawnmower Man starring Jeff Fahey and Pierce Brosnan rated R

the picture quality is about vhs quality on your monitor.
but they are pretty neat anyways.

the website for the company that made these is: www.moviecd.com
assuming its still there :^)

$5 minimum on each please. Please bid on each item separately.

I think these are called (VCD's). I believe the can be played in many
modern DVD players, such as the Apex one i have.

ok, after about 7 minutes of playing with my DVDplayer on my TV i have the
following results: they DO NOT work on my dvd player. i tried every option and
button.... so basacily they work on pc's only. -Chad C.

You might be able to play them on a normal DVD player. I own an Australian
Sansui DVD player that lets me play just about any format. The key to doing
this is the presence of a file browser that lets me select where the MPEG file
is (assuming it is MPEG and not an old windows AVI (Audio Video Interleve)).
If somebody has a Sansui player (or a player that has a file browser) you
should be able to watch it. Fuzzball, check to see if the CD has a MPEGAV
directory or something similar. The video file will always be the biggest on
the CD. If it has a .AVI extention then it will not play on a DVD player. If
it has a .DAT or .MPEG/MPE/MPG then it will play on a home dvd player.

I just test this on my player yesterday. It did not play the
disc with just an .mpeg file on it, but when I re-burnt the CD-R with
the file as a .mpg, it played like a VCD.

I think the keys are the words "normal", "modern", etc. Some
hardware DVD players will play VCDs, most will not. More PC
DVD players will play VCDs, but not all. I make VCDs at home,
and they play just fine in my CD-ROM drive, but not in my DVD
drive. Yes, all DVD players should play VCDs, but again, most
don't. Software decoders have an easier time of it, but again,
not all will do the job.
