Welcome to Grex's Spring 2003 auction conference!
Here's how it works:
Starting with item 3, each item describes something being auctioned
off. If you would like to bid on it, enter a response in the item
saying how many dollars you are willing to pay for the item. The
minimum bid on all items is $5, unless the donor specifies a higher
minimum.
When nobody has made a new bid in at least a week, an auctioneer will
enter a response saying that the item is "going once" to the highest
bidder. If 24 hours pass without a new bid, the auctioneer will
announce that the item is "going twice". And if another 24 hours go
by without a bid, then an auctioneer announces that the item is sold.
No sale is final until an auctioneer says so, so if 24 hours have
passed since "going twice" but the item has not been closed, you may
continue bidding.
The auctioneer who closes the item will also send e-mail to the
highest bidder to announce that they have bought the item. The buyer
then sends money to Grex, by either
1. Mailing a check to:
Cyberspace Communications, Inc.
P.O. Box 4432
Ann Arbor, MI 48103
or
2. Going to http://www.cyberspace.org/grexmart/auction.html and
clicking on the Paypal icon, to send money to Grex with a credit
card.
The treasurer will send mail to both the donor and the buyer when
payment is received, to let them know that they are free to arrange
delivery.
Note that some items are available for anybody, anywhere, to bid on,
while others, such as a home-cooked meal, would be difficult to
deliver outside the area where the person donating it lives. If you
live far away from Ann Arbor, you'll probably want to keep track of
which items can be mailed to you, to decide whether or not to bid on
them. Shipping charges are to be paid by the buyer unless specified
otherwise.
This item, item 1, is frozen, to get people into the main part of the
auction quickly. Item 2 is open for discussion of the auction. At an
"Ok:" prompt, type "browse" to see a list of the things being
auctioned off. You can also type "!query" to get more auction
information.
If you would like to donate something to be auctioned off, please send
mail to "auction", which is an alias for the auctioneers (aruba and
mooncat), or enter a response in Agora item 135. Many thanks!!
We, the auctioneers, are committed to making sure that all items that
are paid for in the auction actually do get delivered. So you can be
sure that you won't get stiffed out of something you buy. After a
reasonable time has passed without payment, the auctioneers may ask
the second-highest bidder if he/she still wants the item at the price
he/she bid, and if so, sell it to him/her.
All proceeds go to Cyberspace Communications, Inc. (that's Grex). The
money is used to pay for Grex's operating expenses (telephones,
electricity and rent), and to buy new computer upgrades to make Grex a
faster, better, system.
