Nell was a change of pace from the cookie cutter films which have come about
lately lately

I went to see "Forrest Gump" tonight at the Fox, and was really moved
because I saw a little of my own childhood in what Forrest experienced.
I was unpopular, to say the least, and that does get a little lonely--
but everyone who does go through that has to deal with it in his own way.
The film itself was beautifully made, and frankly speaking, if Tom Hanks
does not win the Oscar, then there is no justice. I predict that FG
will take Best Picture, Best Actor, and best Director, among others.
I want to say much more but I'm not really that eloquent to express it.

In short, You *MUST* see this film!!!

#3 of 269 by nephi on Sat Dec 24 15:26:27 1994:

It is definitely a *must see*.

#4 of 269 by crisper on Sat Dec 24 16:26:00 1994:

Pulp Fiction.
I was a bit let down... all they hype and all.
It had some good parts, though... lot's of quote's to use in everyday life.

I just saw "The Night We Never Met" and I thought it was pretty
good, kinda cute. A B I guess.

#6 of 269 by peacefrg on Sat Dec 24 19:33:19 1994:

Dazed and Confused...A must see for anybody who just graduated.

#7 of 269 by tsty on Sat Dec 24 21:46:31 1994:

If you have a general tolerance for NON-gratuitous gore Interview
With the Vampire is a must see.

There is one gratuitous scene though, the trashing of a pristine
cherry-red 1965 Mustang convertable (sob!).

Saw _Dumb and Dumber_ today. Not sure why; given that I didn't want to see
some dorky "Holiday" flick like Santa Clause, didn't want to see either
of the two movies with McCauley "I'm still cute, really" Culkin, and
_Little Women_ hadn't opened yet, I guess it was the best option.

It was interesting to see Jeff Daniels do a transition from _Speed_ to
this, sort of like Keaneau Reeves from being Ted to _Speed_ but in
reverse. I laughed some. It was OK, but not as good as _Ace Venutra_
(haven't seen _The Mask_ yet.) I get this feeling Jim Carry is capable
of being something other than a really annoying but lucky idiot, but I
doubt it'll be possible for him to escape that role.

Natural Born killers = an experience

#11 of 269 by peacefrg on Sun Dec 25 13:38:44 1994:

I can't wait to see that. Soundtrack is great

#12 of 269 by holmes on Sun Dec 25 20:54:16 1994:

Did "True Lies" and "The Specialist" come out on video yet? (I haventhe rental
store for a while, and don't want to waste my time). Are they worth seeing or
just overhyped?

#13 of 269 by marcvh on Sun Dec 25 22:53:42 1994:

The Specialist is still in theaters.  True Lies will be in early January;
too bad they didn't push it up a little and sell it for $19.95 in December,
it wouldve gone like hotcakes.

#14 of 269 by peacefrg on Sun Dec 25 23:03:53 1994:

Neithor are n video yet, But they're both good movies. True lies is
kind of a B-Movie action type of thing though.

#15 of 269 by rogue on Mon Dec 26 01:15:22 1994:

True Lies was spoiled by the sub-plot with Jamie Lee Curtis in the middle of
the movie. That sucked. I hate it when an action movie tries too hard to be
funny or sentimental -- I like people to be killed and maimed without any
petty interruptions.

The Specialist just sucked. It was slow and it was boring. Don't waste your
time or money.

#16 of 269 by omni on Mon Dec 26 04:38:20 1994:

I have it on good authority that Rennaisance Man starring Danny DeVito
will be out on video on Jan 4. Can't wait to see it.

#17 of 269 by peacefrg on Mon Dec 26 15:09:11 1994:

Rennaisance man is out on tape in Gaylord. I rented it Christmas eve.
It WAS Great!!

#18 of 269 by omni on Tue Dec 27 04:52:24 1994:

Cool. I just might buy that one,

#19 of 269 by steve on Tue Dec 27 05:13:39 1994:

Saw Stargate--fun, but not espically deep. It was cool watching
the effects, which again were the best part of the movie. The plot
wasn't great, but raised the interesting idea of ancient Earth
civilizations having pieces of advanced technology in them. It's
currently playing at the Fox Theatre, if you're in the Ann Arbor
area. Its worth the $1.50.

#20 of 269 by wicks on Tue Dec 27 23:13:08 1994:

Excuse me...but I though that "The Santa Clause" was a wonderful family
movie...it sure beats all those animated movies that you end up taking your
kids to!

#21 of 269 by peacefrg on Wed Dec 28 07:17:48 1994:

I loved the Santa Clause. Tim Allen is a talented actor/author.

#22 of 269 by spartan on Wed Dec 28 18:19:16 1994:

"True Lies" was a B movie? You've got to be kidding!! Also, it was NOT
just an action movie, it was really kind of an action/comedy, so the subplot
with Jamie Lee Curtis in the middle that "sucked" was really important to
the story, I thought. Jim Cameron (the movie's director) said that he wanted it
it to be funny, as well as a good action flick, and he succeeded, in my
opinion, with Tom Arnold. He really surprised me.

#23 of 269 by general on Wed Dec 28 19:55:05 1994:

I saw the movie "Quick Change" last night with Bill Murray and Geena Davis.
Of course, Bill Murray is funny in everything he does, but the part in the
beginning where he robs a bank in a clown suit was a real kick in the pants.

#24 of 269 by chelsea on Wed Dec 28 20:09:27 1994:

Anyone see "Nell" yet?

#25 of 269 by peacefrg on Wed Dec 28 21:25:43 1994:

re#22 - I wasn't saying that the movie was no good. I loved it...Tom Arnold
was great with Arnold. But even Cameron said it was made to be a B-movie.
Remember the scene at the beginning when he's sliding down the mountain
outrunning snowmobiles, skiers, and 1,000's of bullets. And the scene
with the harrier, the daughter, and the missle? Come on! It wasn't made to
be a serious action movie at all. And I llike the part in the middle
with Jamie. That sub-plot was almost the whole movie. Now that I re-read
this it looks like somewhat of an attack on your response...Don't take
it that way :)

#26 of 269 by rogue on Wed Dec 28 22:29:09 1994:

Sorry. The sub-plot still sucks. It was slow. It was boring. It ruined the
pace of the movie.

#27 of 269 by bartlett on Fri Dec 30 02:57:39 1994:

I thought of True Lies as a parody of ARnie movies, and of action movies
as a whole. In fact that first scene struck me as a laugh at James Bond
movies. Still and all, for a parody, I think it was slow, clumsy and not
really entertaining, but I'm glad some of you liked it, 'cause hell, there
isn't enough joy in life, so take it where you find it.

     Chris

#28 of 269 by nephi on Fri Dec 30 20:46:40 1994:

I liked True Lies because I thought it was funny. I thought that most
of the action just contributed to the humor. .

#29 of 269 by janc on Sat Dec 31 16:02:23 1994:

As adrenaline films go, I thought "Drop Zone" was pretty good. Not quite
as fast as _Speed_ but not quite as dumb either, with a better constructed
plot and a more interesting hero. This should not be confused with
"Terminal Velocity" which was just infinitely dumb.

"Ready to Wear" is a lot more fun than the usual star-packed film usually
is. There is an awful lot going on all the time, with about six simultaneous
interlocking plot lines and twenty or so major characters, but even if you
feel like you are missing a lot, it manages to be simple enough to follow.
I had a good time watching it.

#30 of 269 by remmers on Sat Dec 31 17:16:05 1994:

"Ready to Wear", being a Robert Altman film, is on my list of things
to see. Sounds like it has the typical Altman multi-thread plot
structure.

#31 of 269 by chelsea on Sat Dec 31 19:30:25 1994:

"Heavenly Creatures" B+ A New Zealand film now showing at The
Michigan Theater. It focuses on the true story of two girls,
both going through difficult adolescent changes, who find each other
and form an intense, obsession-driven first love. Amazing performances
from all involved but a tad long in parts. The scenery is simply
amazing. Someday, I have to visit this country.

#32 of 269 by katie on Sat Dec 31 19:35:56 1994:

"Jungle Book" was enjoyable, but don't expect the actual "Jungle Book" story.

#33 of 269 by janc on Sun Jan 1 19:43:21 1995:

I thought "Jungle Book" had a story line that got a bit too cute at times, but
was generally OK. There is lots of good animal footage, even if none of the
animals acted very animal-like. Probably a great film to take some kids to.

#34 of 269 by chelsea on Mon Jan 2 00:18:37 1995:

"Pret-A-Porter" Robert Altman's jab at the fashion industry.
Overall a C-. The script was simply far too thin. Sly ending though.

#35 of 269 by remmers on Mon Jan 2 01:12:51 1995:

...and Sophia Loren is still a knockout at age 60 or whatever she is now.

#36 of 269 by tnt on Mon Jan 2 05:06:31 1995:

That's blatant sexual harassment, John! You're supposed to just celebrate
an actor's talent & not physique these days!

#37 of 269 by remmers on Mon Jan 2 10:29:54 1995:

Nah. Anyway, Ms. Loren was very flattered when I told her that.

#38 of 269 by chelsea on Mon Jan 2 15:36:50 1995:

Being sexy is Loren's talent.

#39 of 269 by fitz on Mon Jan 2 15:58:26 1995:

Current: My kids and I saw The Santa Clause and Street Fighter. My kids tho
that The Santa Clause could have been funnier and have better F/X. Street
Fighter was dreary and we wound up getting our excitement from from
"jokes" hidden in the sets. (Eg., a portrait of the antagonist done
in the style of John Wayne Gacy.)

Old: Did anyone else see Till the End of the World? It stars John
Hurt and Sam Neil. It's no academy award winner, but I think that
it is the best movie that no one has ever seen. Flames to my
mailbox on this matter welcomed.
