"Timecop". What a turkey. There are so many holes in the plot that
what's left is a simple chop and dice martial arts movie. My first clue
should have been when Chris Potter liked it.

#2 of 321 by roz on Sun Sep 25 11:51:18 1994:

I absolutely agree with chelsea about Christopher Potter. If anything
appeals to generally accepted values or aesthetic taste, he's sure to
hate it. But he is reliable. If he likes a movie, I don't bother to
go.

("Timecop" also wastes Ron Silver, an excellent actor who once again
is reduced to playing a cardbook comic book villain.)

(At the showing of "Timecop", there were two trailers for upcoming
movies based on arcade games -- "Double Dragon" and "Street Fighter".
I hope that doesn't turn out to be the big movie trend of the late
90's.)

(Eeww. Masters of the Universe was something that no one should
have to endure.)

Re #2. Roz, I don't even consider your response drift to anyone
who reads the AA News, since Potter is such a presence on the movie
page here. I didn't say what kind of presence, just a presence.
A friend of mine once said he gives good ratings if a movie has
enough sex in it, and bad ratings if there's not enough. I don't
see enough movies to verify that, but I believe it based on all
the good movies he has panned.

I wholeheartedly agree he is a contrary indicator. I give his
ratings a correlation of -0.8.

(Make that "*cardboard* comic book villain" in #5.)

Terminal Velocity -- B Not bad, lots of jokes. OK Storyline. OK action
sequences. Plenty of bad guys.

Well, I will see 'The Crow' today- for the fourth time. It is one of my ALL
time favourite movies.

Sat. night I saw "Eraserhead" (David Lynch's first film) Very weird, very
existentialist... but I can't say that I liked it. If I never see it again,
I won't be upset. Right after that was "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" a movie
I truly enjoy, it's more then a little stupid, and insipid, but very funny,
what can I say- I love it!

#11 of 321 by chelsea on Sun Sep 25 20:17:22 1994:

I believe it was Chris Potter who said "Dune" was the best
film ever made.

#12 of 321 by spartan on Sun Sep 25 21:44:39 1994:

I just watched "The Fly" again last night. Not the original, but the '86 remake
with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, directed by David Cronenberg. Great
movie. I never get tired of that one.

#13 of 321 by jdg00 on Sun Sep 25 21:50:03 1994:

re 11: Wow! That was one of the *worst* films every made. I'm appalled.

#14 of 321 by anne on Mon Sep 26 02:58:14 1994:

"Dune" WAS NOT one of the worst movies ever made!! I LIKE it!!!!! What, in
your opinion, was bad about it??

#15 of 321 by steve on Mon Sep 26 03:40:44 1994:

It crammed parts of several books into one, for starters.

#16 of 321 by tnt on Mon Sep 26 04:19:39 1994:

Don't tell STeve that his genetic makeup is many other people crammed into
one, lest he think he is one of the WORST people ever made!

#17 of 321 by hawkeye on Mon Sep 26 13:33:00 1994:

RE #10. Wow. An "Eraserhead/Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" double feature.
I'm stunned.

I just got rereading Dune recently, and I compared it to the movie. While there
were some bits that could have been handled better, there were NOT several
books crammed into one movie.

Hmm...

#21 of 321 by gidget on Mon Sep 26 21:26:08 1994:

"Forrest Gump" was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. A movie
with substance, something that films in the 90's ar lacking. It had a little
of everything: romance, comedy, drama, and even some action adventure
(Vietnam)If you thaought it was stupid, well, "Stupid is as stupid does."

#22 of 321 by zook on Tue Sep 27 02:01:59 1994:

Dune was a terrible movie. If I hadn't read the book first, it would have
been completely incomprehensible.

#23 of 321 by pathuck on Tue Sep 27 06:08:16 1994:

I rather enjoyed Dune (in a weird sort of way). Though I am a Sci-fi
movie fan.
Thought I'd name a couple of movies that I'd recommend:

Three of Hearts - starring William Baldwin and Sherilyn Fenn.
Story deals with Sherilyn Fenn leaving her girlfriend. Her girlfriend then
hires a male prostitute to get Sherilyn back for her. The story
doesn't delve deep into lesbianism, which serves the story well. It
doesn't get political at all. It's just a very enjoyable film.

Grand Canyon - starring Steve Martin, Kevin Kline and Danny Glover.
Story deals with lifestyle and life choices of its characters. Choices
of love and hope, along with response to violence. It's an exellent
film... A+.

Both are on video. Enjoy.

#24 of 321 by anne on Tue Sep 27 23:04:34 1994:

Alright, I have never read the book Dune, although I kinda want to. I just
really liked the movie, it was enjoyable. I liked the action, the characters
(expcept the 'floating fat-man' he was gross, and as a kid scared me. <grin>
Y
re #17 hawkeye- yeah, "Eraserhead / Buffy" We were stunned too. Half the
group was split between liking "Eraserhead" and hating "Buffy" while the
sane one sin the group liked "Buffy" and thought "Eraserhead" was too weird
to follow. (can you tell which group I was in?)

"Three of Hearts" was cool, kinda light, but that's alright.

#25 of 321 by carson on Wed Sep 28 13:20:04 1994:

Yesterday morning I discussed a (planned) trilogy of Australian movies
with pigsie. It came up because the second movie, "Flirting", was just
released in the US last year, although it was completed several years
earlier. Pigsie saw the first two (the other film was titled "The Year
My Voice Broke") when they were released in Australia, but couldn't
remember if the third movie had been filmed. I was curious because I
really enjoyed "Flirting" and wanted to know where the lead character
ended up next. Both movies had virtually the same plot, but I feel that
"Flirting" was a better-told and more interesting than "The Year My
Voice Broke", which was often boring and hard to follow. I have a
hunch that I would have enjoyed "Year" more if I had seen it before
"Flirting", so I recommend seeing both if you enjoy the coming-of-age
genre... and if you know what the third movie was called, let me know!

#26 of 321 by remmers on Thu Sep 29 10:37:11 1994:

I second Patrick's recommendation of "Grand Canyon". (Another thing
going for it is that Chris Potter hated it. :)

Caught an interesting movie called "Doctor Napalm" on cable (Showtime)
the other night. Weird comedy about two brothers who have the
ability to start fires telepathically. Stars Dennis Quaid and Debra
Winger. Extremely screwball, very well done. I have a feeling this
was intended for theaters but never released -- considered too risky?
Maybe it will go the way of "Red Rock West" and make it to theaters
eventually; it deserves it.

#27 of 321 by rebeck on Thu Sep 29 16:39:25 1994:

On the Dune issue... I read Dune three or four times- plus some of the
others in the "Dune" saeries- Frank Herbert did an outstanding job creating
a world- I thought the people who did the movie version completely ruined
what could have been a great movie experience. One point in fact: The
Paul M'adib character was around 12 years old in the book- and how old was
the guy in the movie?

#28 of 321 by omni on Thu Sep 29 17:32:14 1994:

Lenny gave Grand Canyon 2 stars. Typical for Lawrence Kasden,
Blech.

#29 of 321 by mwarner on Fri Sep 30 00:02:29 1994:

I read a quote from David Lynch, who directed Dune, to the effect that he
didn't like the movie and that too much had been compromised; that he had
been seduced by the opportunity to work on a large budget picture and had
participated in something that was, in the end, much less than ideally
realized.

#30 of 321 by remmers on Fri Sep 30 01:07:23 1994:

I think there's a "director's cut" of Dune floating around that contains
material that was excised from the theatrical release. Probably rentable
at a video store.

#31 of 321 by achilles on Fri Sep 30 02:23:39 1994:

A favorite movie of mine (not hte favorite) is Blade Runner. Harrison ford is
good. Everybodies good. for all you cynics who don't like the looks of the
futre, its a must see.By the way remmers, it "wilder Napalm"

#32 of 321 by marcvh on Fri Sep 30 03:50:31 1994:

"Grand Canyon" is the only rental move I ever walked out of, deciding
it was not worth watching the rest of even though I'd paid for it.
I can only take so much poorly done random bad things happening to
characters you don't care about. "Oh no! I cut my finger! Oh no! It's
an earthquake! Oh no! An old guy is having a heart attack!" Calvin
can put together more interesting strings of accidents.

#33 of 321 by remmers on Fri Sep 30 11:18:50 1994:

Re #31: Thanks for the correction on the "Napalm" title. I had a
feeling I didn't have it right...

#34 of 321 by achilles on Fri Sep 30 22:06:30 1994:

No problem remmers. sorry for the sloppiness of my review everybody. "The
Fugitive is another good movie.Tommy Lee Jones rules in the movie. Harrison
Ford also makes a fine performance. Awesome train wreck.

#35 of 321 by mtm on Sat Oct 1 00:53:35 1994:

I don't own a vcr and this is an XT, so be forwarned. Best movie I have
seen in last few months was "Faraway, So Close", sequel to "Wings of Desire".
Very powerful, eloquent, mysterious. Chris Potter did give it a 3 (I think),
which does not speak much for my opinion (he kindof liked it - not good.)
Also "Farewell My Concubine", rather depressing though. Of course I use quote
and these are foreign movies, so I am probably out in the rough.
