Grex Arts Item 67: ****<<<< AT THE MOVIES >>>>****
Entered by chelsea on Sun Dec 26 15:30:48 UTC 1993:

Have you been to the movies lately? This is the movie review item
where we all get to play Siskel and Ebert. It doesn't matter whether
the film is a new release being shown in a theatre or something that
has been around for ages on videotape. Just jump right in and share
your opinions on what worked and what didn't.

I rented "This Boy's Life" knowing nothing about the film other
than two of my favorite actors played the leading roles - Ellen
Barkin and Robert DeNiro. It also starred a new kid who is getting
rave reviews for another recent performance but I can't recall his
name. The film was a little jewel, well worth renting. Rated: B.

Please refrain from using the word "cheese: as a derogitory term. I am
a Cheese lover, it offends me.

I saw the Pelican Brief. It was pretty good, but it would have been better
if it were about 20 minutes shorter. Non-brief pelican? Anyway, it was
the first time I've seen a movie starring Denzel Washington. I'm impressed.
I'd like to see him some more. What other films was he good in?

#8 of 232 by remmers on Mon Dec 27 19:17:35 1993:

_Malcolm X_, for one. He also stars in Jonathan Demme's new film
_Philadelphia_, soon to open at theaters everywhere.

And don't forget _Much_Ado_About_Nothing_.

#10 of 232 by ziggy on Tue Dec 28 15:12:37 1993:

I loved the Pelican Brief, I read the book first and thought the movie
wasn't quite as good. However I was very impressed by the job that Denzel
Washington did.

#11 of 232 by danr on Tue Dec 28 16:39:07 1993:

Washington was also in "Glory," the story of the black regiment from
Massachusetts that fought in the Civil War.

#12 of 232 by vidar on Tue Dec 28 19:37:24 1993:

I plan on seeing _Tombstone_, _Addams Family Values_, and possibly _Wayne's
World 2_. However, my sister told me that _Wayne's World 2_ is way cool...

--- NOT!!! ---

...and then there's "Farewell My Concubine", which I saw with seveal fellow
Grexers. I don't think I quite absorbed it all. It was too thick, operating
on too many levels. I guess I _am_ a part of the MTV generation after all.

#22 of 232 by ziggy on Wed Dec 29 22:15:23 1993:

Like me too, er something, huh, huh, huh.

Recently carson and I embarked on a long journey to Briarwood to see the
film GERANIMO! I thought it was good for the most part. Sevral parts of
it were very depressing, such as the brutal killing of many indians. It
actually had carson in tears although he won't admit it! But, it was worth
seeing. I would give it about *** (three stars)

#27 of 232 by vidar on Fri Dec 31 23:33:28 1993:

_Tombstone_ was great but carries on too far. It should have ended with the
gunfight at the O.K. Coral.
I give it a B-

I just got my new christmas present from Suncoast video...

The President's Analyst ****
James Coburn plays an analyst in NYC who has been selected to be the
president's analyst. All goes well until Coburn has a nervous breakdown
because he cannot tell anyone about what the president told him. So, he
leaves, well, disappears and then the FBR (FBI) orders him killed because
he knows too much. Everyone else just wants to capture him to learn what
the president has been telling him. The ending is beyond words, in terms
of being funny. There is absolutly nothing wrong with this film, good
cast, not too long, and the pace is just right.zzzzzz
   William Daniels appears briefly.
14.95

I loved this movie. It is one of the most hysterical I have ever seen.
I refuse to go near phone booths.

My friend got a boxed set of all the Star Wars movies. I hadn't seen them
in a while and I didn't realize how good they are. If you haven't seen them
in a long time you should really pick up a copy.

#32 of 232 by vidar on Fri Jan 7 21:15:24 1994:

I remember I saw my first Star Wars movie when I was 3.

Uh the rip of of the Orignal _Heaven and Earth_ is playing at A2 theatre.
The orignal was an untranslated Samurai movie. Kind o' weird for rated R,
no blood when people got decapitated and that type of stuff.

#38 of 232 by bartlett on Mon Jan 10 05:00:32 1994:

Real Genius: B. This is an unrepentantly silly movie with little or no
relationship to reality, but then again, it is an unrepentantly silly movie
and a good laugh.

Glen Gary, Glen Ross. Wow. This movie is wonderful, with several wonderful
performances, and ome really slimy characterss. An A, but not for the
easily depressed.

#39 of 232 by chelsea on Mon Jan 10 22:29:27 1994:

"Shadowlands" A gentle, old-fashioned love story. The story has been done
to death, actually, but somehow Attenborough brings it around this time
with such tenderness and honesty that it's well worth seeing. Winger is
perfect and Hopkins is Hopkins.
