Grex Arts Item 50: wanted! Fellow musicians to play chamber music.
Entered by cwb on Fri Dec 4 22:57:30 UTC 1992:

I am looking for people to play chamber music with. I'd like to
start a string quartet. I play violin. If you play violin, viola
or cello, please post here or send me mail. If you play
anything and would be interested in playing some chamber music,
go ahead and post here too. Thanks

I can play a phonograph, tape deck, and even a cd player!

#2 of 37 by steve on Mon Dec 7 02:50:20 1992:

I can't play anything Chris, but I'd love to hear such a group,
if you can form it. Good luck.

#3 of 37 by cwb on Tue Dec 8 01:20:27 1992:

Don't laugh Matthew, there's modern music scored fro such, and it's not by
     PDQ Bach.

#4 of 37 by arabella on Mon Dec 14 10:01:04 1992:

If you ever get into playing chamber music that includes a
piano continuo, I might be interested. I haven't practiced
the piano much lately, but after 11-12 years of lessons, I
think I can get the facility back fairly quickly. Oops, make
that 13 years. I just recounted...

#5 of 37 by remmers on Mon Dec 14 14:42:47 1992:

Ditto me. Or harpsichord continuo. (Transporting my harpsichord is
a little cumbersome, but possible -- or it could be at my house.)

#6 of 37 by cwb on Mon Dec 14 23:32:27 1992:

Piano/harpsichord is ok by me. Violins are a lot
more portable.

#7 of 37 by shaymu on Sun Nov 28 21:28:10 1993:

I can play any tipe of saxophone
er, type

#8 of 37 by aahz on Sat Mar 19 04:30:39 1994:

What level are you playing at? (How many years of experience?)

#9 of 37 by whoohoo on Wed Sep 27 22:02:37 1995:

Hooray for you- sometimes it seems like there aren't enough people today who
are interested in classical music as there should be.

#10 of 37 by scott on Thu Sep 28 11:16:45 1995:

Hmm... If I had room and money for a real bass, I could play at a reasonably
high level after a bit of practice.

#11 of 37 by orinoco on Sat Jan 3 04:01:43 1998:

(remmers has a harpsichord? whoa...)

#12 of 37 by remmers on Sat Jan 3 11:07:13 1998:

(Yup. I had a harpsichord in 1992 when this item was posted,
and I still have it. The chamber group that this item is
        about never came off, though...)

#13 of 37 by coyote on Wed Jul 29 04:24:45 1998:

Wow, if anybody's still interested in forming a chamber music group, I
certainly am... (I just joined this conf). I've been playing piano for about
10 years (first instrument, and I never plan on quitting), I played trumpet
for awhile (about 4 years), but now I play horn, although I still have my
trumpet. I'm currently working on Vaughn Williams' Six Studies in English
Folksong with a friend and I'm organizing a piano trio. We had originally
wanted to play the Faure trio, but after a runthrough we realized that it
probably isn't the best piece to play for a 'first trio' (none of us have
done chamber music before), as it is very harmonically strange. So now we're
looking at a Beethoven, probably Op. 1 No. 1. That's about the extent of my
chamber music experiences though, I'm afraid.

#14 of 37 by mary on Thu Jul 30 02:04:14 1998:

I may be interested depending on the time commitment. I'm currently
playing cello in a violin/flute/cello trio, in a cello quartet, and, as of
a few days ago, in a cello duet. I'd put myself in the intermediate
student range and I'm more into have fun with music than in being
competitive.

#15 of 37 by coyote on Thu Jul 30 02:29:15 1998:

Well, I'd be more interested in 'just for fun' playing, too. However, before
anything is organized, we'd need to find some more volunteers to play.
Chris's account's been reaped, so we'd need to find another violinist to do
a piano trio (well, a violin-cello-piano trio, that is). I'm sure there
are plenty more instrumentalists on Grex who just haven't seen this item.
Of course, there's still that Vaughn Williams piece that I mentioned
above, which was originally scored for piano and cello, and my duet
partner hasn't really been very reliable... but I'm sure that doing
something in a larger group would be more fun than a duet... hmm, we need
publicity for this item, perhaps?

#16 of 37 by remmers on Thu Jul 30 17:46:37 1998:

I'd recommend getting this item linked to the "music" and "classical
music" conferences. Email the fairwitnesses, arabella and krj,
with a link request.

#17 of 37 by mary on Thu Jul 30 20:58:30 1998:

Or simply enter a new item in Agora and it will get the
widest possible exposure.

#18 of 37 by coyote on Fri Jul 31 04:10:36 1998:

(This item probably wouldn't belong in the just plain 'music' conf: I looked
at it the other day and it said it was for discussions of all music except
Western classical music, which is what I think this item's leaning towards.)

#19 of 37 by rcurl on Fri Jul 31 05:32:11 1998:

You think you could stop the ensemble from breaking into some pop music
sometimes?

#20 of 37 by coyote on Thu Aug 6 23:55:14 1998:

Eep! Well, it could happen.

#21 of 37 by mary on Fri Aug 7 13:23:48 1998:

No it couldn't. ;-)

#22 of 37 by coyote on Mon Aug 10 03:41:24 1998:

I mailed arabella asking for a link, but haven't gotten a response yet.

#23 of 37 by rcurl on Mon Aug 10 21:08:25 1998:

I told my daughter, who plays flute, of this discussion, and she reacted
with enthusiastic interest. She has been in the Pioneer Varsity band for
two years (six years total flute), but did not get transferred to the
Concert or Symphony bands, and did not want more of the same Varsity level.

#24 of 37 by mary on Wed Aug 12 13:35:06 1998:

It would be very nice to have your daughter in such a group, Rane. I've
played in ensembles where the ages were all over the map and it's a
special experience for all involved. Especially when the expertise often
falls to the younger players.

#25 of 37 by coyote on Wed Aug 12 15:04:01 1998:

Actually, now that we've got a group of three people, I'm sure there's some
very nice trio music for flute/piano/cello. I'll check it out.

#26 of 37 by rcurl on Wed Aug 12 16:26:11 1998:

There is a great deal. Look at http://www.fluteworld.com/fwcat25.htm and
do a search on (fl, vc, pf).

#27 of 37 by coyote on Thu Aug 13 05:29:48 1998:

I checked it out. Neat! I've made a little list of all the music on that
page that's for flute, cello, and piano. I could probably post it in my
directory on Grex for all of you to look at. Then, I guess we decide what
we'd like to do. Before actually making a purchase, the School of Music's
library's quite extensive so we could check out some scores from there to look
them over (perhaps we could find recordings somewhere, too) before making a
commitment. Shall I upload the list?

#28 of 37 by mary on Thu Aug 13 12:03:30 1998:

Sure. Choose something easy to start with. I'll share the
cost of any music.

#29 of 37 by coyote on Thu Aug 13 15:14:40 1998:

The list is at /a/c/o/coyote/chamber.music
The three easiest pieces (by their grading system) are the Gaubert Serenade
($9), the Joplin Ragtime Dance ($21), and the Rachmaninoff Vocalise ($3.50).
However, something disappointing about that catalog is that they don't list
whether a piece is arranged or not. I don't think they listed publisher
either, but that might be encoded in the catalog number. I don't like playing
arrangements, unless it's either arranged by the composer or it's simply a
transcription, but otherwise... I'd be very interested in the Rachmaninoff
Vocalise if it truly is his arrangement. I know he wrote one for violin and
piano, one for cello and piano, and one for full orchestra, but I was unaware
of this one. I suspect that it might be an simplified arrangement not by
Rachmaninoff because it seems odd to me that his works would glean such a low
difficulty rating. I'll check the U-M catalog to see what they have: it would
probably show on theirs if it's arranged or not, if they have it at all.

My daughter - Vittoria, by the way, and is called V* - is away for this
week but I'll present her with this item when she gets back.

#31 of 37 by vitti on Tue Aug 18 01:55:58 1998:

hi, I'm V*. I'm rcurl's daughter. I've read most of the intercourse on this
matter and I have a suggestion. Two years ago, when I was in eighth grade my
friend and I did a flute cello duet for the solo and ensamble compitition.
I still have the book of short peices we took our selections from. It has a
flute book, a cello book, and a piano with flute cues book. It's baroque
music, rated III or intermediate. It's published by The Associated Board of
Royal Schools of Music, is edited by Richard Jones, and contains composers
such as Michel LA Barre, Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, Telemann, and others. I think
that about covers it. please let me know if that interests you.

#32 of 37 by mary on Tue Aug 18 04:06:02 1998:

Hi, V*. Baroque would be fine. Do you own all three parts,
or could you supply me with a mail order source and the
exact title of the collection?

Psst, I think you meant discourse, not intercourse.
It's an easy mistake. ;-)

#33 of 37 by vitti on Tue Aug 18 18:34:34 1998:

the exact title is Baroque flute pieces, book III. but i would be happy to
supply you with the cello part (yes i own all three parts).

thanks for the correction

#34 of 37 by vitti on Wed Aug 19 19:00:55 1998:

i spoke to my private teacher yesterday and she said that she would compile
a list of music and CDs which they can be found on.

mary, i'm sending you the cello book.

#35 of 37 by coyote on Tue Aug 25 04:40:57 1998:

Sorry I haven't responded here for awhile, but I was out of town. That music
which you suggested would be just what we're looking for, I think. Hmm...
if you're sending Mary her part, would you like my address to send me the
piano part, too?

#36 of 37 by vitti on Wed Aug 26 22:26:20 1998:

yes, if you can send me your addresse i would be more than happy to send you
the piano part, i can send you the book and you can make your uwn copies, or
i can send you the copies. please specify which you prefer.

#37 of 37 by coyote on Thu Aug 27 05:33:09 1998:

Well, it probably depends on the size of the book <g>. I'll email you with
more details.
