Ok, now that we've all been griping about the really awful television commercials, what are the commercials you actually enjoy watching? Sure it's a guilty pleasure, but everyone has a couple commercials that they get a kick out of. (This shouldn't surprise anyone, since some commercials are more entertaining than the network television programs they appear during.)
51 responses total.
The thing that prompted me to enter this item was seeing that Highland Appliance is re-running their old "Electronic Thing" advertisements. It's not the "Thing" ads that I remember fondly, though, it's "The Things the Thing Left Behind" Sale that used to amuse me.
The one where the master has Alex the dog go into the kitchen to get him a beer. (Can't remember the brand of the beer though, guess I received the wrong message from the ad.) Anyways, you hear the dog open the refrigerator and then you hear him open the can and then you hear him drinking. The owner responds with "That had better be your water you're drinking, Alex!"
I like the old commercial for some type of dog treats -- the one where the dog says "Bacon, bacon, bacon! It's bacon! There's only one thing that smells like bacon, and that's bacon! Look, she's got something! What is it? Oh no, I can't read!" or something similar to that. Griz
Strohs.
Those were pretty good.
I can't think of any commercials that I really like right now...
The only beer commercials I can remember liking were the Hamms animated bear ones and maybe the (Olympia?) Artesian series.
Willie Nelson: "The IRS Tapes". Not sold in stores. Proceeds from this album go directly to help pay off Willie's tax debt.
The Stainmaster Carpet commercial, with a beautiful opera aria in the background (forget which one), and a beautiful woman being approached by a tres suave man, who puts his hand on the table, and proceeds to knock the whole thing over. Very silly, and fun.
I like all of the Bo Jackson Nike commercialss and most of the Spike Lee commercials as well.
Re #7: I like that one, too. Griz
French's Mustard commercial. You know - the one with all the sandwiches being terrified of the prospect that someone is going to put something on them other than French's. They never show it anymore, though.
Speaking of mustard, French's had a decent commercial for their onion mustard, way back in the '70s. It was a man, crying from the effect of the onions, trying to stuff one in the bottle. It was pretty good imagery.
ENERGIZER BUNNY! (really starting to get annoying though... :) And I like that new Grey Poupon commercial where the guy pulls up and says "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?", and the other guy goes "But of course!", and tells his chauffer to drive off...
ESPN now has one wherein Chris Berman is promoting Saturday doubleheaders,
and the Energizer bunny comes and interrupts.
Berman: "Get outta here! Get Back! Get backbackbackbackbackGONE!"
'tis hilarious.
I'm sort of ticked at (Eveready?) (whoever makes Energizers) because they quashed "NetBunny", a Macintosh graphics hack written by a friend of mine. (basically you'd run it in a room full of networked Macintoshes and it would make a little digitized Energizer bunny stroll through from screen to screen. Energizer didn't like it, for some reason, and forbade him to distribute it (even for free.))
Whoa. There is something like that in use at U of Arizona... And how did they find out about it?
It probably came from him.. Some copies got out. It even got mentioned in MacWeek or MacUser's Best of 1990 list. It really was pretty cool. How'd they find out about it? He asked them for permission to distribute it.
Bad move...
not as bad as distributing it and then getting in a heap of legal trouble for it. I don't see why they cared anyways, it was actually sort of flattering to their product. Free advertising at the very least. I think he should have turned it into a Duracell bunny and distributed it anyways. In any case, that's why I don't like the Energizer bunny commercials.
There was this old alka seltzer ad where the resteraunt reviewer is writing a bad review. He remembers the musicians etc... but the best part was the ducks still swimming around in the soup.
Almost the Bo Jackson Nike commercials are great. (Almost *all* . . . ) I really liked the Ray Charles/Diet Pepsi commercial. I'd buy the record if I could find it. Best one out currently: "There's a place where beautiful models hang all over ordinary guys . . . where ordinary guys really know how to dance . . . wouldn't it be great if life could be like beer commercials?" Best part: it's a beer commercial.
re #14: A federal court recently ruled that Energizer does *not* own
exclusive rights to the bunny. The judge pointed out that, being
as the bunny was originally a Duracell idea -- parodied by
Energizer -- Energizer could not prevent other companies from
making parodies of the rabbit (i.e., Leslie Nielson in a rabbit
suit). In short, if it doesn't say "Energizer" on the drum, I
would not be at all nervous about distributing Mr. bunny.
As far as NetBunny went, I believe Dean digitized the bunny from an energizer commercial. Since he has neither the time or the money to fight a suit from the Energizer people the recent court decision doesn't really change anything. Even if he could, at this point I doubt he'd bother to distribute it. Why give free publicity to a company that's not only uptight but apparently completely lacking a sense of humor?
I really like the Home Alone - Pepsi commercials right now. They are extremely cute/funny.
If I see that ugly girl's face one more time, I'm going to kick McCauley Kulkin (sp, dammit) in the cajones.
Speaking of the Bo Jackson commercials, I miss the commercial for Bartles and Jaymes, where "Ed knows fruit, but Ed doesn't know broccoli."
I don't have the heart to kill this item. Hopefully there are more endearing ads on TV these days.
I like the Dion Sanders Nike commercial (Hey mista, don't you got a football game to go to?)
My current favorite is the chips & salsa commercial with Cris Elliot at the tax office. "80,000 dollars in deductions and no reciepts"? I smell refund! Really? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HaHaHa B-) I love it!
I like most Coke ads, especially the recent ones with computer annimated bears. I like most Pepsi ads too, but the current one where chimp B likes human girls because he drinks Pepsi is too stupid. It's a cute idea, but Chimp B is no more likely than Spuds McKenzy to be attracted to humans....
It is also demeaning to women. It sends the message that chimps have more on the ball than the average woman. At least thatUs what I see in it.
I thought the message was that an above-average chimp is a better catch than the average man. :*
Then why was the chimp driving? Should have be:empty
The above average chimp is also a better driver -- and even asks for directions as needed?
I think the one that shows a babys face when asked to get the babys tempeture....."where".
I get a real kick out of the Bud Light drag racing/dog show combination every time I see the weener dogs ears flapping in the wind I laugh hysterically. What can I say, I'm easily amused.
As a Star Wars fan, I laughed my head off when I first saw the Energizer bunny commercial with Darth Vader. Sacrilage though it was, it was still funny. I also like the Stainmaster carpet one when the guy dumps the food on the floor, trying to be sophisticated.
One of my all-time faves is the stainmaster commercial with the baby in the walker. He's racing thru the house knocking things over, and all of a sudden- there's mom! The kid shoots backwards REALLY FAST. I about died the first time I saw it. Another i liked from loooong ago was a chanel commercial.. real arty, disconnected images, with "I dn't want to set the world on fire" playing. It prompted me to go buy the sheet music for that song :)
I like the commercial for lifesavers where you see the lifesavers close up and
you hear Ladysmith Black Mambazo sing a chorus of "ooh-la-la-la" in the
background. Cool, man. Also, I tip my hat to the people who do the commercials
for the Discover card,
believe it or not. The commercials are made up of little skits set
against a pure white background. Simple and to the point, no frills.
Very cool. And speaking of commercials for Chanel No. 5, I like the
recent one where the lady in the movie theatre morphs to look like
Marilyn Monroe and the one from a while back with that Estee Lauder
model who's name is Paulina something-or-o,
other, as a caged bird, swinging and whistling in the wind. Beautiful.
I though K-Mart had some interesting commercials a couple years ago- two or three different products, but the whole commercial was one tracking shot with no cuts. Pretty banal aside from that.
