Grex Arts Item 109: What movies do you hate that everybody else likes?
Entered by remmers on Fri May 5 10:37:42 UTC 1995:

This isn't really the same as "What is the worst movie you ever saw?"
I'm asking you to name movies that were generally acclaimed by audiences
and critics, maybe even won awards, but that you personally detest.

29 responses total.

"The Sound of Music" is to film what "Feelings" is to music.

#2 of 29 by md on Fri May 5 13:04:22 1995:

Christopher Plummer called it "The Sound of Mucus."

I could never understand what all the fuss was about over "Casablanca."

#3 of 29 by hawkeye on Fri May 5 13:45:48 1995:

Even though I knew what "Rosebud" meant before I saw "Citizen Kane", I was
expecting this to be one of the greatest films ever due to all the
discussion about it in Film Theory books, etc. I thought it was fair with
some interesting camera work, but that it was pretty dull. I don't know if
I *detest* it, though...

Maybe I missed the point, but Jurassic Park was pretty pointless. Get my point?

#5 of 29 by other on Fri May 5 16:54:52 1995:

I found "Quest For Fire" very obscure, while everyone I went with was really
wowed. I may just have been too young....

#6 of 29 by omni on Sat May 6 08:12:44 1995:

Most of what my mother buys ;)

 A couple come to mind:
From The Terrace - 2 hours plus of lying, cheating and morass. Shoot me
and put me out my misery.
Any Musical (well almost)- I hate people bursting into song without
saying 5 words. I did like TSOM, though.
Fried Green Tomatoes- Ugh! nuff said

 One more:
Come Back Little Sheba and Hot Spell- Ok, so it's 2. Shirley Booth is
a wonderful human being, but if she were my wife, I'd have killed her
long ago, and no jury could've convicted me. Meddling, overbearing, smothering,
and just plain asinine.
Both were "Hazel gets a husband" if you ask me. ;)

We've been over this before, but alot of people really *love* _Local Hero_,
I find it stupifying. <kill me, please...>

Al Pacino in _Scarface_ got alot of critical acclaim. OTOH, it was one
of the few movies that made me want to take a shower after seeing it.
Very ugly movie.

has anyone saw congo yet i feel it was a very stimu;ating expireience, those
monkeys were pretty gross looking

#10 of 29 by katie on Tue Jun 13 16:11:50 1995:

That was a stupid movie.

I thought _Local Hero_ was great....

#13 of 29 by omni on Tue Aug 8 06:56:52 1995:

Jurrassic Park was a stinker IMO.

#14 of 29 by otterwmn on Tue Aug 8 11:20:38 1995:

Ditto that, omni.

#15 of 29 by orwell on Thu Aug 24 00:47:53 1995:

Pulp Fiction and True Romance were two movies that i think suck

#16 of 29 by remmers on Fri Aug 25 12:34:39 1995:

Interesting; those are two of my favorite movies of the last
  couple of years.
"Ben Hur" is a big, popular, award-winning film that I think
is absolutely awful. My opinion, of course.

Once again remmers is on the opposite side of the barricades.
I thought _A Fish Called Wanda_ was hilarious and _Breaking
Away_ was a real heartwarming upper.

  Next!

#19 of 29 by chelsea on Wed Sep 6 11:19:35 1995:

Agree with remmers. Valerie, please do see _Breaking Away_
now, as an adult, and see if the movie comes across differently.
I wouldn't be surprised. The whole story, actually, is about
seeing things differently as you mature. It's about goals, dreams,
relationships that must change, as everything changes. Great
movie.

#20 of 29 by gregc on Fri Sep 8 12:05:23 1995:

Another vote for _Fish Called Wanda_. Kevin Kline's performance as Otto is
hilarious, and Jamie Lee Curtis, welll......, Valerie maybe you've just
got the wrong set of hormone's to appreciate Ms. Curtis's performance. :-)

#21 of 29 by omni on Fri Sep 8 19:33:49 1995:

For the record, I loved "Fish called Wanda" so much that I actually bought
it sight unseen. Cleese is a wonderful writer.

#22 of 29 by remmers on Sat Sep 9 10:28:56 1995:

"Tom Jones" was a huge hit, got wonderful reviews, won Academy
  Awards. I didn't like it.

#23 of 29 by bruin on Sat Sep 9 12:35:10 1995:

The movie was so popular, a Welsh pop singer borrowed the name.

#24 of 29 by robh on Sat Sep 9 13:20:18 1995:

I never really saw the point of Basic Instinct. OK, great, Sharon
Stone flashes us, and we see her naked. And...? The movie bored
me to tears otherwise.

#25 of 29 by gregc on Sun Sep 10 13:05:04 1995:

Rob, you need to stick a screwdriver in your forehead and wiggle it around
until you reduce your intelligence to that of the average american male.
You'll appreciate Basic Instinct alot more after that. ;-)
Set mode=neanderthal

#26 of 29 by headdoc on Sun Feb 4 19:49:40 1996:

Valerie, you are not the only one who found some aspects of a Fish Called
Wanda, depressing. There were many parts of the movie which had me laughing
until tears came into my eyes, but the torment of the stutterer was almost
painful for me. Also, if I recall correctly, I thought Kevin Kline's eating
the live fish was disgusting. The specific details escape me as I saw it a
long time ago, but I do recall having very strongly mixed reactions to the
film.

#27 of 29 by freida on Sun Feb 4 22:13:26 1996:

Neighbors with John Belushi? It was the only movie I ever went to that I
wanted to ask for my money back...OTOH, my husband thought it was hilarious.
I thought it was the stupidest movie I had ever seen...still do.

#28 of 29 by omni on Mon Feb 5 18:30:16 1996:

re 27: sounds like he would. No doubt, his kind of movie. ;)

#29 of 29 by hross on Fri Jul 5 21:45:43 1996:

The Piano...I hated the movie I thought it was boring and pointless. and a
for Holly Hunter...Not speaking for 1 and a half hours didn't impress me
