This is the item for telling people about all the *other* wonderful conferences on Grex. Spring Agora is NOT everything - there are about ONE HUNDRED other conferences here on Grex, on all sorts of subjects - books, poetry, cooking, sex, web pages, women, role playing games - you name it. Type "help conferences" at the Ok: prompt to see the list, or just check out the ones that are touted in this item.

Never mind. By the way, is there a way to delete a bbs response after you've posted it?
I believe you can use "scribble" at the 'Respond or pass?' prompt.
Thanks, Jeffrey. That does the trick. Notes for fellow-newbies: SCRIBBLE is a synonym for ERASE (you can use either command). The command must be typed completely, unlike most other bbs commands which require only a unique prefix. You must specify the number of your response to be erased.
Do the counts of new items and responses displayed when you start bbs include all conferences, or just the default Agora conference?
good questions. Does anyone know of the .cfrc file is parsed when starting bbs? I used to be able to 'browse new' auto-magically.
The count of new items and responses is for the current conference, whichever one that is. If you leave one conference, say agora, to join another conference, say coop, you'll get a count of new items and responses for the new conference, in this example, coop. I don't know whether bbs parses the .cfrc file. I don't have one, but I do have a .cfonce file, which does get used.
Another note to fellow newbie Grexers -- Definitely do check out the other BBS conferences besides Agora. There is an amazing amount of really interesting material on every subject imagineable going back to the early 1990s. Definitely set up your cflist file. It's a list of conferences that you want to check regularly. After you read new content in Agora, enter the BBS command N (NEXT) to check the conferences in your list for new items and responses, too. Note that the main Grex menu's change command choice to maintain your cflist (which is mentioned in documentation inside and outside BBS) does NOT work currently. Instead, run remove conferences from your list. You can also directly edit the file: ~/.cfdir/.cflist x
P.S. The final "x" above is NOT a kiss.
Stingy with the X's
You bet. I'm no floozy.

excuse my language their. :) I am the proverbial newbie, thanks papa for your golden tips.
Here who wants this hug ----> < > :)
P.S. the above blankness 5.16/n **IS** a kiss.
We love you, too, nydel.
How can I get a really Unix shell?Help me.
Nydel is wise! In-fact i fully agree with nydel about gopher.
Not too sure about the snog though! :/ (or the crossed wires here :) )
JJYYPPCC, you can change your Grex shell with the `change` command. Pick Shell
form the menu, then set your shell to one of the following:
/bin/sh
/bin/csh
/bin/ksh
/usr/local/bin/bash
/usr/local/bin/es
/usr/local/bin/psh
/usr/local/bin/rc
/usr/local/bin/sash
/usr/local/bin/scsh
/usr/local/bin/tcsh
/usr/local/bin/zsh
/cyberspace/bin/bbsh
/cyberspace/bin/menu
.
If you are validated, of course. If not your are stuck in a restricted shell (resh).
You can hit the Koopas with your shell but make sure you jump if it ricochets off of a pipe.
Also, green koopas will walk off a cliff, but red koopas are smarter and will not walk off a cliff. Beware of blue koopas, as they walk faster.
This shell was made to order. That's why it fits me so well.
Hmm..still having weird experiences listing new items in bbs cf's...
The system is trying to trick you into thinking it is vibrant and useful with new posts. People are interested in Grex!
Be productive Be Compliance Be All that you can be
Grex is wearing parachute pants and a Frankie Goes to Hollywood shirt. Holding an ice cream while checking the Casio watch. Humming "It's a Sin" by Pet Shop boys in the mall. They are showing Preadator in the cinema in 20 minutes. Play some defender when the ice cream is gone to burn some time. Compliance and productivity is the mantra of mall rat Grex.
Wallet chain...bum a smoke...another quarter on the Defender screen "I'm up next"
Wow...Such a Warm atmosphere here? Grex must have Hundreds of new users waiting to be validated.
The people that actively participate are warm and friendly, but most of that is in 'party' and on gopher I believe. There are really only one or two sour grapes here in bbs... and really only a handful of active users period. What grex really needs are more people who are willing to participate.
What tfurrows said. Also, a hallmark of both Grex and its sister site M-Net are a somewhat ascerbic and dry sarcastic wit. It's not meant to be personal or mean; just funny. Feel free to join in!
I go with the "warm atmosphere" sentiments; Grex is indeed quite a cosy place to hang out, and a warm friendly bunch of people to hang out with. The 'party' comms program is a good place to meet other Grexers, even if they are not online at the same time. The Grex gopher server, has not long been back online , after 'quite' a few years (how many years now?) and is a great addition to the gopher universe: well worth a visit, or adding your own gopher page to the server (some tutorials in user: papa, and tfurrows, gopher holes, to help create your own gopher hole and join in :) ). More people would be nice.
I come here for the puzzles
I'm "Dazed and Confused". Does anyone have a quick answer to this
question? What the heck happened to Grex?? How does a "Public Service
System" lose the public? I've read most of the BBS stories and the history of
Grex. Does Grex believe they can revive Front/Talk / Back/Talk?? No seriously.
Is there a plan to bring in new users? Are you guys/gals just toot'in your
horn? Remembering the "Good Old days"? I'll tell you what..I'd kill to be
sitting in front of the console of Grex servers, wherever that is. But that's just
me. I had it great in 1994 with LI.NET but that was many moons ago. No
sense in crying over spilled milk right. So What the heck happened??
resp:37 The World-Wide Web happened. Smartphones happened. Broadband and Wi-Fi happened. Angry Birds happened. Where have you been? We are here because we enjoy Grex more than the alternatives, but 1994 is not going to come around again.
I get that part. I guess I don't understand why Grex didn't jumpon the Web
bandwagon. Even I could see where the NET was going in 1994. There
was Google then MySpace, then Wordpress. Is running a Web server that
costly? I don't know? I know you UNIX guys hate the Web but man if it pays
the bills? Now I see Grex wants to try and put a spark into Gopher. I think
that's great but doesn't the world want a Web Page? Is Gopher going to
attract new users? What kind of new users? Programmers? Unix Admins? I
don't know?. How did SDF get so big? Maybe Grex needs a Server in
Iceland? Japan? Get me a Plan ticket. I'll go!
Anyway in case anyone is interested the Web side of Back Talk doesn't
work right but I managed to login. There's a 505 error that needs to be
fixed. It looks like Grex was on to something with Back/Talk. it's a damn
shame it didn't work out. Now don't everyone get all bent out of shape. I'm
not bashing Grex. If I could go for a walk with you guys (Wherever it is you
go) I surely would. I'd love to hear the "Grex Stories". I have a few of my
own.
That's just my opinion.........I could be wrong. ;-)
