Grex Aaypsi Item 48: Not Another Cafe
Entered by bruin on Sun Jun 18 21:40:53 UTC 1995:

How many Grexers have been to Not Another Cafe (affectionally known as NAC)
on the corner of South Forest and South University in Ann Arbor (the former
location of Community Newscenter and Great Lakes' Cycle Center's less than
successful attempt at wooing customers away from that bike shop less than one
block away)? If you have been there, what were your impressions. Does is
kick butt? Does it suck? No opinion?

Never been there, sorry.

#2 of 29 by steve on Mon Jun 19 00:44:31 1995:

I was there a couple of weeks ago. It seemed more comfortable
than most, since it has couches and interesting chairs.
The prices seemed high, but then again most do. 75 cents for
a bagel when I could have talked 60 feet to the Bagel Factory
and paid 40 cents strikes me the wrong way.
But they have to pay expenses, so I suppose its the way things
go.

It struck me as being one of the weirdest places I've ever been in. It's
comfortable, and not the sort of place I see very often, so I like it.

This item should be linked to aaypsi.

Too much attitude in that place for my taste.

Hmmmm. I'll have to try it.

Everyone I know either seems to love it or hate it. I have not been there
myself although I have been planning to. It *sounds* like a good idea
to me though.

just tried the place last weekend - actaully fascinating! yes, new
bussinesses in that area are a tad on the expensive side, but the
accomodations are wonderful!

And there is an intentional stage for entertainment ... stay tuned.

I haven't played connect four in years. I love that place.

NAC is fun, but I wish there weren't so many cafes. . .they're starting to
get on my nerves. Nac is different in alot of ways though. . .for one thing,
alot more townies hang out there than at depresso, they dont seem to have the
anti-equal-opportunity employment practices some of the other cafes do, and
they've got an interesting atmosphere, and they have ive music. All good. I
just wish they had more stuff for cheap; I'm finding it hard to find anyplace
I can can afford to hang out anymore. . .

Katt, have you thought about joining us at Grex Night Out at Not Another Cafe
some Thursday night?

#20 of 29 by gelinas on Thu Feb 3 04:41:28 2005:

I've not noticed: Does this place still exist?

#21 of 29 by juicy on Sun Feb 20 06:30:40 2005:

good lord no. it lasted maybe a year, if that; there were a couple other
coffee places there afterward, and it's been offices and classrooms for some
UM unit or other for several years now (School of Public Health (inhabitants
of the old Tower Recs space) or the Dept of Sociology would be my guess, but
it's been a while since i looked.)

#22 of 29 by denise on Mon Dec 4 23:50:44 2006:

So what/where are the good cafes in the area these days?

#23 of 29 by slynne on Tue Dec 5 02:09:51 2006:

There are a ton of them but I dont go to cafes too much these days.

Re: #22
What are you looking for in a cafe'? Live entertainment, a full menu,
late hours, a certain atmosphere, a coffeehouse, a full bar, or what?

#25 of 29 by tod on Sun Dec 10 01:35:51 2006:

Black people

#26 of 29 by denise on Tue Dec 12 23:31:21 2006:

Re24: the main thing would be good food in a relaxing atmosphere. The menu
wouldn't have to be real extensive but what the do serve would be really good.

#27 of 29 by mary on Wed Dec 13 01:01:57 2006:

I've always been fond of Afternoon Delight, on Liberty and 5th, downtown.
Fresh, delicious food. And they put cocaine in their muffins.

Re: #26
My first thought would be Ayse's Turkish Cafe', maybe Eastern Accents
"Bakery" on 4th downtown or Sen~or Lo'pez Taqueria on W. Stadium, or
\aut\ Bar in nice weather (when they're outside on Braun Ct. next to
Kerrytown), Cafe Marie on Plymouth, Sidetrack in Ypsi...

#29 of 29 by gelinas on Sat Dec 16 04:51:54 2006:

I've not found "good food in a relaxing atmosphere." But I've not tried
Afternoon Delight.

For coffee, I like Portofino, on South Maple at Jackson. Caribou Coffee
isn't bad. I've enjoyed the soups I've tried at Whole Foods.
