THOMAS RETAINS PUBLIC RELATIONS FIRM
NORTHWEST WASHINGTON - Phil Thomas, Cyberspace Communications Board of
Directors pre-candidate, has retained the services of the elections
division of "Gingko
Aromatherapy, Inc." to coordinate his public relations effort.
"In the interests of straight talk, one of the main reasons I left the
Howard fold was the contemptible work of TwinkieTime Elections. They are
an example of just the sort of spin-doctors we need to eliminate from the
system. Also, I went out on a date with the CEO's girlfriend once."
Thomas drew a distinction between the amoral spin-doctoring of TwinkieTime
and the style of Gingko Aromatherapy, noting that "this firm's unorthodox
take-no-prisoners approach will synergise with my campaign's paradigm. In
addition, Mr Shores, the company's CEO, and I share a common vision of a
better Grex."

Sinking to the level of other parts of the "real world" is not necessarily
one of my goals for Grex.
Becoming a member is a signal that you are invested in the community.
Different people want different things from the community. If what you want
is to push your personal agenda and to attract storms of attention, then there
is certainly no compelling reason why you should ever have wanted to become
a member up till now.
Of course, lots of people don't become members because they simply can't
afford it, so it would be wildly wrong to assume that the mere fact that a
person isn't a member means that they don't care about Grex's community.
However, Jamie's responses suggest that he was looking for a different
kind of pay off from membership.

SOUTH LYON, MI - In a brief statement issued to the press late this evening,
TwinkieTime Productions President and CEO Kevin "Twinkie" Nicholls denounced
the campaign of Mr. P. Thomas. According to the release, Mr. Nicholls alleges
Mr. Thomas "...is riding on the coat tails of destiny. He's stealing our
thunder. Basically, he's a third-rate second bananna trying to get in on our
action."
When questioned about the possible acquisition of the pthomas campaign by
TwinkieTime Productions subsidiary TwinkieTime Elections, Mr. Nicholls
responded "That little bitch! Fuck no. We're not handling his campaign. Fuck
him, and fuck you for asking." A very irate "twinkie" immediately ended the
press conference, and stormed out screaming "Phillip is 'Pip'! Don't you
people watch 'South Park'? Nobody likes Pip. Go away Pip, nobody likes you!"

SOUTH LYON, MI - In yet another heated press release, TwinkieTime Productions
Global Group President and CEO Kevin "Twinkie" Nicholls defended the honor
of his girlfriend.
"Pip seems to think that it was a date, but he's clearly distorting the
facts." Mr. Nicholls then produced an electronic message from his girlfriend
which stated "He thought it was a date."
According to Mr. Nicholls "It's clear that Mr. Thomas is a very sad, and
delusional man. These files I happened to find in his home directory paint
quite a vivid picture of a boy who simply could not hold reality in his little
hands. Not even for a moment. I ask you, is this the sort of person for Grex's
board? I think not. They're stocked up on delusional people as it is."
"Twinkie" declined to comment on the choice the Thomas party made for their
campaign management, stating only "It's a great choice. Really."

Going back to a serious resp:94 from Jamie :: he wrote, regarding the
membership vote on the censored log:

I disagree with Jamie that his vote wouldn't have mattered, and that
the result was a foregone conclusion.

Jamie could have been #15, Joe Saul could have been #16, and if you
couldn't have moved another four votes in such a low-turnout election,
then what sort of an online politician are you? Probably 60
Grex members did not vote on this proposal.
The annoying thing is that I lean Jamie's way on the closing of the log,
and in item:17 from April 2001 he was making a productive argument on
the topic instead of working hard to piss people off.

THOMAS CONDEMNS "POLITICS OF PERSONAL DESTRUCTION"
NORTHWEST WASHINGTON, DC - Phil Thomas, pre-candidate for the Cyberspace
Communications Board of Directors, today condemned the recent release by
"TwinkieTime Elections," public relations contractor for the James Howard
campaign.
"I expected nothing less from this company," said Thomas. "These
distasteful sleaze tactics are one of the reasons I left the Howard
campaign. The politics of personal destruction are alive and well."
"In the interests of straight talk, why does Mr Howard continue to retain
the services of these purveyors of prurience?" Thomas declared. "He
should put himself ahead of this mudslinging and retain other
management."
When inquired about whether he really did "think it was a date," Thomas
observed "Well, let's just say that's not the whole story." He refused
further comment on the matter.
Thomas ended his statement with a strong declaration of principle. "The
other side knows that I have the moral high ground, so they resort to
tabloid-style attacks. My campaign repudiates such corrupt practices."

You know, if you guys are going to scream about wanting to make changes, then
you should be in a position to have the power to make those changes. To have
the power you need to be a member of Grex, since quite frankly the BoD doesn't
do crap with policy. So either become a member, and then *vote*, or just shut
the hell up.

I agree strongly with Ken that the vote on the censored log was not a
foregone conclusion. I expected it to go the other way, and was quite
stunned at the result.

Be forewarned that JP2 considers each and every word he types to be his
personal "artistic" property, and any reproduction, re-transmission or
other use thereof without his permission and he will sue. This means
that if this item gets reproduced in another item in this conf, without
his permission, he will sue. This item has JP2's postings in it. If it
gets linked anywhere, on or off site, without his permission, he will
sue. If someone takes tonight's party logs, full of jp2's chat
transcripts, and posts them over on mnet in an item, he will not only
sue, but he will use root to hide them or request their deletion.
JP2, if you want to serve on Grex's board, you should agree to
indemnify grex and the users of grex and anyone who reads or posts on
grex. You should agree to hold harmless anyone who chooses to
reproduce or re-transmit any items or party logs or other
communications on grex that contain all or in part your words that were
posted in any grex forum, all of which are by definition public. Grex
is a commune. These conferences and party are essentially the
intellectual property of the grex collective. Grex allows anonymous
user access from the internet You post on here, and a month from now,
someone might type "JP2" or your name in Google and see this item or
any other item come up as a search result. And this person wont have
to get a user ID to read it, copy it or re-transmit it. The postings
here are accessible without there being a trace of who accesses it.
The minute you post here, you have no control or idea who may read it.
In fact the entire internet may read it, millions of people.
It is very important that you indemnify as a means of showing your
willingness to be part of the collective and to show your faith in the
collective. No one is going to want to deal with you, talk with you in
party, correspond with you, or anything else if you so zealously guard
your "intellectual rights" that they have to fear being sued. You post
here and you agree to share your intellectual rights to the material
posted herein. It is not possible to strictly enforce copyright law in
this environment. Any strict interpretation and Grex would have to
shut down. So you either accept grex for what it is or you shouldnt
run. And accepting means indemnifying.

i'd like to thank ken for including me in the ever declining state of
Arbornet, Inc., as an active participant in its demise. Ken, thanks, its
clear that participation on Arbornet's board of directors is the true reason
for financial decline in an already financiallly declining public access
bulletin board system, as that is the true core of, well, financial decline.
Serving as a member of the board is, while not time consuming, not something
everyone is willing to make time for, and as a person who has dedicated his
time to making the system function better (m-net) and making the corporation
run smoothly, even in times where members of the board disagree with
themselves, solely for the sake of making life better for the users, even
without statistics of revenue increase to back my validity as a volunteer for
something i believe in, to someone who so kindly offers financial reports with
intent to aggravate, I'd like to offer a hefty "fuck you" for all of your
thoughtful contributions to the well being of public systems, namely
m-net.arbornet.org. love you, -Anthony.

Styles must be referring to my resp:78, the catalog of M-net downward
trends, where I wrote:

I'm sorry, I did not mean to imply that pthomas, jp2 and styles were the
CAUSE of new people not coming to M-net conferencing.
They are rather the markers; as far as I can tell, they are the last
M-net BBS participants to arrive and stay active.
I am making this argument to challenge Jamie's campaign claim that he
has "demonstrated considerable ability" as an Arbornet board member
and "PR geek." If he'd demonstrated ability, one would expect to see
an upturn in new BBS users. But the effect from his publicity work
was transitory.
My apologies for the misunderstanding. I have no quarrel whatever
with anything styles has done on Arbornet, either as a
board member or conference participant.

thanks for the apology.
i see where you are going, but i do have to say that jamie has indeed brought
users to m-net, be they bbs users or not, via slashdot/rootprompt/wired
articles. this far more than other board members have done to increase the
user base on m-net, regardles of whether or not it has generated revenue or
an increase in the bbs user base.

M-net into the Unix online press, and that these articles did bring
new users to the system, some of whom even contributed money.

...and i would like to extend that no one on the board currently, (nor recently
(in the past two or three years) has brought that many new users to m-net.
keep in mind, please, that this is not a pro- nor anti-jamie response, i am
simply stating that which is. He writes lots of articles, and includes m-net,
and puches a transient flood of new users to the system. Most of these users
leave, never to return again, but some do indeed stay.

I'm sorry this issue about non-local board members is so contentious, and
misunderstood.
I raised it because I'm in Australia, and it's pretty hard for me to get
to MI for monthly board meetings.
However, it is *free* (i.e. $0.00) to conference via netmeeting - no
conference calls needed.
Anyhow, it's no biggie.
