Interestingly, HVCN is even more restrictive than M-Net in its view of
the users that it serves. (Washtenaw, western Wayne and southern
Livingston Counties).

So I see M-Net as intermediate between Grex and HVCN in this respect.

There is no good reason for any two organizations to agree on this sort
of thing. It healthy to have them all be different. I really like Grex's
global reach. HVCN has a different purpose. If it didn't, then why have
two organizations? At the same time, HVCN and Grex can collaborate on
local projects.

I would vote against telnet restrictions for out-of-state users on Grex.

The fast (761-5041) modems have been moved to the terminal server, but the
settings are not quite right yet. Give a try anyway?

All I got when trying to dial in was "groupie: "
it wanted a password, not my login

OK, the password-to-use-the-modems setting has been circumvented. I've put
2 modems on -3000 and 2 on -5041 (they are all the same speed, though) to
catch as many users as possible. If we are still w/o the ALM card tomorrow
(the modems usually go thru the ALM card, but it is now making Grex crash when
installed), I'll hook up more modems.

Grex's ISDN connection is up. We're going to let it run for a few days before
we change it over to being Grex's main connection to make sure it's stable.

We're using the ISDN connection as our main connection right now. It seems
really fast so far.

Many thanks to Dorian Kim for providing the connection, Jared Mauch for
arranging it, and Ken Josenhans for spotting a typo I made in the router
configuration (the typo is what kept the connection from coming up when the
line started working yesterday).

You are all welcome. It's the least I can do to support the local online
community.

One thing though, you should try to contact me at dorian@blackrose.org
instead of the cic.net address. Jared, you should know better. :P

yeah ISDN makes it much better....just hope sharing nether's lines
doesnt make grex as unreliable as nether...I can never telnet to
nether. Or hardly ever.

response 98 of 194: Mark Unseen   Oct 20 18:01 UTC 1997

Don't worry, Richard. We'll be able to keep the old 28.8 ICnet link until
after we're sure that the new link is stable. Also, I believe that nether.net
's problems have been related to the fact that nether.net was tied to Jarad's
job at CIC.net. Now that CIC.net's lay-offs, buy outs, mergers, etc are
beginning to settle down, I'd expect nether.net to stabalize.
jared
response 99 of 194: Mark Unseen   Oct 20 20:42 UTC 1997

nether.net is something totally else.. unrelated to grex's internet
connection.
Please know what you're talking about before you spurt something like
that, richard..
