We are experimenting with taking the modems off of Grex to see if this
stablizes things. If it does, we will probably put the modmes on the terminal
server, which will mean telnet queues on the dial-ins until we fix telnetd
to treat the dial-ins differently.

There is some evidence that the crashes relate to the serial ports.

So these latest crashes arent related to the re-constructed /etc file? Or
is it because Grex still operates on a woeful 1/4 of its RAM capacity?

*sigh* How long does Grex have to choke down everythingon 32 Megs of RAM?
Has staff officially given up trying to get up to 128? Surely, with
all of Grex's brilliant staff minds, there must be an idea out there
about how to fix this problem/ Dont give up!

Are we doomed to
these problems until that far off, distant day, when Grex is actually up
and running on the new SUN?

We are DOOMED! But thats ok. *big grin* Some of us are so fixated on Grex
that we acutally treck to the public library to get on-line.

761-5041 just prompted me for the groupie password.

response 81 of 283: Mark Unseen   Oct 18 19:03 UTC 1997

Yes, I came to the library because 761 5041 was the only modem answering at
11 am. And it wanted a password, [not mine] at the prompt "groupie: ".
I figured, I'd see if we could reach grex by telnet on ;the library internet
access. Sure enough, it worked. So now I can Grex when the library is open
and there is a computer available (pout: only half an hour per person, not
enough for TRUE grexing).

Right, I need to switch ports on the first modem. Aside from that, it looeks
like it will work OK with the terminal server (I'm using it now, because I
happen to *know* the groupie password).

I telnetted in just now and actually got in without waiting in the queue!
The load average is less than 1.5. We have been up more than 21 hours.
Did all of these good things happen just by disconnecting
the dialins? Were the dialins really responsible for load averages
over 20?

response 84 of 283: Mark Unseen   Oct 19 04:56 UTC 1997

There are 8 users on with a load average of 1.7. What's wrong? I'm telnetting.

response 85 of 283: Mark Unseen   Oct 19 05:19 UTC 1997

The 8 users on that Rane reports is a low enough number of users to keep the
load average pretty low. In that case, Grex had just gone back on the Net
after I managed in the course of switching Grex over to the ISDN connection
to make it inaccessable, and had to go to the Pumpkin to finish the commands
I had started to type in.

(my own theory is still the power supply as culprit, so I think the memory
will cause crashes when we add more) :(

Can't you put a scope on the power supply and monitor the voltages?
scott
response 89 of 283: Mark Unseen   Oct 19 19:30 UTC 1997

Did that before w/ Klaus Wolter, who tweaked some trimpots and got us back
to using the ALM again when this happened last.

I've addedmore modems to the terminal server, for a total of 7.

For some reason I cant get a telnet connection, and havent been
able to do so this afternoon, so I am Backtalking. Which seems to
be working nicely with the new ISDN connections. Of course it
probably isnt the ISDNs as much as it is that nobody is telnetting
right now eh?

I dont get any errors, I just get "host or gateway not
responding", as if Grex was off the 'net.

I doubt it has anything to do with the ISDN line.. since no ips have
changed. What ip are you coming from, richard? can you ping grex?

How much would a new power supply cost?
scott
response 98 of 283: Mark Unseen   Oct 19 21:15 UTC 1997

Um, valerie, 152.160.30.15 is the terminal server, and won't get Richard to
anything but a password demand for that unit.

Re: 97: A new PS, if available, would be more expensive than having the PS
out of our spare chassis fixed.
aruba

Well, how much would that cost?
