We have upgraded our lynx to the latest version (2.7.1f).
You can run the older version (2.6) as oldlynx, but I don't recommend it,
since the new one fixes a security hole.

Is the security flaw that it allows you to download Netscape or MSIE?

about lynx.... sometimes i am on a machine with more than 24 screen lines.

of coursse stty rows xx makes thigns bearable *except* in lynx.

lynx (and not just on grex) REFUSES to use more thna 24 lines. and
that seems strange to me.

That's weird. I have no problem with lynx adjusting to my
screen. Right now I've got a 50-line display, and lynx uses all
50 lines just fine.

Sounds like a job for "resize" (if we don't have resize on Grex it'd
be worth snagging from some machine with an X11 distribution compiled
as it's a very effective way of talking the system into dealing with
  non-standard sized terminal windows..

response 82 of 139: Mark Unseen   Aug 12 22:35 UTC 1997

We do indeed have 'resize' on Grex; I invoke from my .login
file. No more need to do the 'stty rows M cols N' bit.
(However, your mileage may vary. Not all terminals and terminal
emulators work properly with 'resize'.)

(But it sounds like TS was doing 'stty rows M cols N' and it
wasn't working. That's odd; it should work too.)

using stty rows/cols has *never* chagned the action of lynx .

of course i issue stty before lynx... whatis resize and when/where
do i issue it, and how can i tell if it is/was set or setenv or
whatefer.

i would expectthe results to show up in lynx, but before that, how
can/could i determine.

TERM from setenv shows up as =vt102 fwiw.

thankxxxx in advance.

  Try:

      eval `resize`

at a shell prompt and see if it does what you want.

I've updated the phones command to reflect reality, instead of my own
hallucinations. I also found a replacement power supply for our last GVC
modem, so we now havd 13 lines running with all error-correcting modems.

The first number for fast modems is back to being 761-5041, and there are (as
in the past) 4 fast modems.

The older GVCs are the first 6 modems in the slow group, followed by the newer
GVC modems that some people have had trouble connecting to.

Re #88: Tried setting my termtype to vt102, and resizing the
screen continues to work fine, including lynx.

Scott - the "phones" command still says "Dialing (313) 761-4931 will always
give you a 9600bps error-correcting modem". That's not right, is it?

response 92 of 139: Mark Unseen   Aug 14 07:12 UTC 1997

on this particualr machine, the eval resize returns the termcap
(after noglob) and then the termcap particualrs, then unset noglob ...
but i'm on a 24 line term...

next time i amonthe 36 line screen, i'll try stty and then
eval resize, which is wht i think mcnally was wnating me to try to
see if :col#80li#24:cr....... changes with it, right?

TS, you need the backquotes (graves) originally given:
eval `resize`
not
eval resize

<<duh toasty>> thankxx, davel.

......however........
i just suspended out of agora to try to type it right, and, to my amazement
the response to: eval `resize` was
                        Unmatched '.

honest! and i got that three times, just ot be sure. now what?

response 97 of 139: Mark Unseen   Aug 19 07:18 UTC 1997

Hmmm.. Odd, that works just fine for me. I see that you use csh,
it should work for you too.. It's possible, though, that the resize
your shell runs is not the same as mine runs (which could be caused by
you having a different search path or having a resize alias..)

What happens if you type: " eval `/usr/local/bin/resize` " (without the "s)
How about: " set noglob; eval `/usr/local/bin/resize`; unset noglob "
tsty
response 98 of 139: Mark Unseen   Aug 19 10:08 UTC 1997

<<this is too weird>>

the first returns the same unmatched '.

and the second returns ..... the csh prompt after a few seconds.

note that in both cases of unmatched, the character
is the ' not the ` ` that were used in teh command.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, unix is *such* fun <g>.

mcnally
response 99 of 139: Mark Unseen   Aug 19 19:09 UTC 1997

the unmatched' is being generated by the resize command itself (but I don't
understand why it's only giving you one..) the second behavior (returns
the prompt after a second or two..) is what should be happening, try seeing
if lynx likes your terminal now..

anyway, I'll try and stop monopolizing the announcements item.
