Thanks DaveL, I changed my perms
  No longer will I pout

I think that Backtalk switched them on me
  When I checked it out

I clicked the link to change my list
To see what all I got

But I backed out of that page
  Without changing a dot

  Checking .cflist perms later
  rw-rw---- it said

Jan or Steve might fix it up
And put this bug to bed

Looks like ttyh4 is gone for a while
There are no processes on it, which should make you smile

But the system still thinks that kr is on
After the next reboot, that problem should be gone

Fat-fingered my password, what the hell,
"Incorrect Password

When Backtalk runs it isn't you
So changing files is hard to do.
A program called ``partutil''
Permits your .cf files until
They can all be written
By the group Backtalk is in.

Partutil, alas
Has been a morass
Of bugs which I trust
have now bitten dust.

I fear I gave an incorrect amount;
I got the http error on a shell account!

response 81 of 231: Mark Unseen   Oct 13 20:51 UTC 1996

I think that error is somebody's feature
The page explains the "bad login" creature

But if I don't know lynx,
then that URL stinks!

I see your point, but it's not a bug
It's a user interface debate to tug

response 84 of 231: Mark Unseen   Oct 14 04:32 UTC 1996

URLs are becoming ubiquitous.
(rhyming that would be ridiculous)

With respect to lynx, there's nothing to know,
type lynx <URL> and off you go.

response 85 of 231: Mark Unseen   Oct 14 05:29 UTC 1996

It also works, I think you'll see,
if from within Lynx you hit the "g"
Then enter the URL, and you're off in a flash!
(This has an advantage - the program won't crash
If you mis-type the URL from the command line.
I always use "g", and the program runs just fine.)

Of course I knew all that,
it's for the newbie I'm up to bat!
For how would I know,
the G key means "Go"?

The part of the message that says "Password Incorrect"
Is enough to tell most why they couldn't connect.
But for accounts deleted and passwords forgotten,
A help file you have to log in to read would sure be rotten.
That's the advantage of the URL:
You can access it remotely as well.

  If you've a browser, and know what you're doing;
Not everyone does, or they need some clueing

You know the person's at a login query
So why not give the info right therey?

Like logging in as "help" to get text
Or as "confused" if you're really perplexed

Tell them to log in as "badpasswords" to get
Explanations with no need for a web browser hit

        (That response at my sensibility is eating;
Stanza 2 has some blatant linguistic cheating.)

response 90 of 231: Mark Unseen   Oct 15 08:56 UTC 1996

The old message 'login incorrect'
was causing quite a flood of mail
from users most sincerely abject
because they could not connect

So as remedy new messages we provide
incorrect password, no such loginid,
and other short messages will now betide
the poor user whose fingers collide

The world's most popular browser is netscape
and url's are ubiquitious in advertising
so from confusion to escape
we post a url nice short and shipshape

While pondering a response had me stumped
I was unceremoniously bumped
from ttyh0
a "NO CARRIER" did show
(and my participation file was subsequently dumped)

Was your pondering of long duration?
Perhaps the idle timer is your explanation.

As I sit, weak and weary,
Pondering a question or a queary,
I find that thinking all in rhyme
Diverts my thoughts and kills much time.

My ponder did last but a minute
but alas the system did freeze
the item was stuck with me in it
then the modem hung up - geez louise

response 95 of 231: Mark Unseen   Oct 16 13:03 UTC 1996

Of course, the single "login incorrect" message is a security feature on most
systems - giving minimal info to those trying to crack accounts. On Grex,
of course, where anyone can get an account & then get all the usernames they
want, or even get lists of logged-in users without creating an account, this
is definitely not an issue. Giving more informative messages was a great
idea, Marcus. Hope it helps the flood of help requests.

Meg, I've had this happen to me a number of times - not mostly in reading
responses, either (so the combination of pager & idle timer is definitely not
involved - it's happened a few times in mid-keystroke in vi, for example).

Lately we've had small rashes
of Grex crashes.
Perhaps this explains the freeze
that Meg sometimes sees.

The system is up! I can play with my toys!
Unfortunately, I got lots of line noise
On ttyh7 and ttyh4,
The phone connection must have been poor.
I'm currently on ttyh9
And no noise at all, the signal is fine.

response 99 of 231: Mark Unseen   Oct 22 13:13 UTC 1996

I'm on ttyh1 and I can't believe how fast grex is responding. Here's hoping
that grex is working well because it is so happy with its new home. Of course
I expect that the difference is that I'm not usually on at this hour.
