My apologies for not being at TOP last night as I had hoped. Durn
Night Ride never showed up for my ride to and from the festivities.
BTW, the quote "I wish my brother George were here" is attributed to
Liberace, but was actually spoken by Bugs Bunny doing an impersonation
of Liberace.

The Grex sign that was on the tower is currently lying on the floor of
the Power Center rehearsal room.

*** Y'all gave away approximately 600 magnets? ***
Wow. I'm *impressed.* I'm so sorry I couldn't be there to see
it, but I had a date with a beach chair in Cape May...
anyway, *wowowowowow*....

I wish I could've made it to the TOP that night, but I didn't get back from
Sterling Heights until 10PM.

I showed up for a bit during GQ. I saw omni, *very* briefly, as I was
scurrying away, and also saw gregc. Didn't see any magnets, anywhere.
When I showed up a few days ago, a cute girl tried very hard, but
unsuccessfully, to sell me a pencil.

Now we will have to see if we do gain any more local users, via
the URL or via the phone number.

I totally missed the whole production, but I am very glad that the folks
who worked so hard to promote Grex had so much success with this
project. Now I am wondering whether I can obtain any of those "extra"
magnets.

Oops. Yes, I remember seeing an attractive lady I thought might be
birdlady, with a collection of friends heading rapidly the other way.

We might want to think about giving away some magnets during Art Fair.
I could probably convince the CTN powers that be to let me hand out
magnets from their booth when I'm there, espicially since they took
AALINC (and it's Grex ad) down.

I'm holding perhaps another 150-200 magnets.
I have some distribution obligations to cover with that stock --
making sure all those who gave money to the project get some,
and also sending some to some active users who have asked nicely.
There's no way I will get that completed before Art Fair.
I'm in no hurry to move out the rest of the magnets. Unless
some other people are feeling extra-generous, there won't be
more of them. Since we don't have a presence
in a booth at art fair, I guess I feel like giving the magnets out
there would be sort of like throwing them up in the air in a
crowd of 100,000. My inclination would be to hoard the remaining
stock for some future Grex-ish event.
(It would be nice to do a non-profit booth at Art Fair like M-net
used to do. However, it is a major volunteer commitment
to build, transport, assemble and disassemble the booth;
and to keep it staffed through the three work days of the fair.
I'm not clear that we have the resources to do this.)
If we could get flyers at art fair that would be great;
flyers are cheap and we can get more easily.

A few of us built the M-Net Art Fair booth in a couple of hours. M-Net
isn't using it any more; it may still be around somewhere, and if it is,
I'd be shocked if Arbornet wouldn't let Grex borrow it. It's no good
for this year, obviously; you have to reserve Art Fair space months in
advance. There's plenty of time for next year, probably.
Arbornet took in a lot of money from selling manuals and "Internet
accounts" in the early days when Internet access was expensive and rare
and new.
We also had a terminal connected to M-Net for several years. This was
kind of interesting to a few people; they'd come down and log in and
hang around in party. I don't think we gained any new users from this,
because the ones who logged in from the Art Fair booth were almost
always existing users. We didn't benefit from publicity, there were
dozens of non-profits with brochures, and people just plain didn't want
them. They got scattered all over the area, and were a nuisance.
What they wanted was to buy something. Anything. People who'd never
heard of M-Net wanted to buy t-shirts, sweatshirts, any kind of
souvenir, and in a few cases, the terminal. We could have sold the
users who were hanging around, as slaves. (I wish I'd thought of
this 5 years ago.) Sell cans of pop, bottled water, coffee, doughnuts,
the Grex stock of t-shirts and sweatshirts, those magnets, tours of the
Pumpkin, autographs from luminaries like mdw and katie. Print out some
ASCII pictures, frame them, and sell them as art (you could do worse),
or glue together computer components and sell them as "cyber-sculpture".
But don't run a booth if you're not selling something. People get
annoyed and stomp off and look for the next booth.
I don't think anyone really wanted Internet connectivity through M-Net,
they just wanted to spend their money. We had something cheap they
could buy.

As of last night, Washtenaw Non-profits still had two booths available. I
was going to register for one of them today, but the gang decided they didn't
have enough volunteers to staff the thing. John would probably be quite happy
to get a few more groups in.
