The list is helpful, Steve. Thanks. (A typo though - take me out
of the "have neither" column.)

Well, for years and years M-Net has water oxen waiting at the
the gate so it's nice to see Grex has let them in. ;-)

Hey, never let it be said that we aren't an equal oppertunity group. :)

Steve - keep posting the list, it's useful.

I know this isn't the "cadidates speak out" item, but I'd like to ask the
accepted nominees: If elected, are you committed to "do whatever it takes"
to ensure that a competent and dependable treasurer is selected from among
the board members, including volunteering, if necessary?

So why exactly is the yak ineligible? And Steve, the lists are helpful; but
why are you keeping a list of people who are ineligible?

Re 79:

So they won't get nominated again and again and.. (?)

Anyone even bother to punt the nominated that haven't accepted?

response 81 of 167: Mark Unseen   Nov 10 21:00 UTC 1999

re 78: Yes, if elected, I would do whatever was necessary to ensure
that a competent treasurer (or any other position, for that matter) was
selected, including volunteering if necessary.

In fact, that's a clearer description of my feelings on the subject than
I had been able to think of previously. :)

I accept the nomination that has been placed on my shoulders.

And, if Elected, I promise to grace the President's head with dignity,
decorum, and, of course, a little bit of sillyness. Why else would you
elect a 'Silly' hat?
eeyore
response 83 of 167: Mark Unseen   Nov 11 02:41 UTC 1999

But are you a Sorting Hat also? :)

If elected, I would do whatever was necessary to ensure that a cpmptent
treasurer was selected, including making sure that I myself was not the
treasurer. :)

I intend to do whatever is necessary to ensure a competent treasurer is
appointed, including *not* volunteering myself. I don't think everyone
on the board has to have the same skill set, and I know myself quite
well enough to know I don't have the skills to do a good job as
treasurer. I can certainly describe quite easily the skills I think a
treasurer should have, I know there are plenty of people who do have
those skills and enjoy using them, and I know that I don't have those
skills and wouldn't enjoy it. I think it is important for the board to
be able to divide and share responsibility, and to delegate jobs to the
people who can best get them done, and while I would do my utmost to see
that the treasurer can and does get stuff done, my most important
contribution would be to not become treasurer myself.

The skills I could bring to the board include technical knowledge and
experience, and practical knowledge and experience gained from 19 years
worth of computer conferencing and 16 years of involvement with public
access computing. I think I can also point to a practical record of
getting things done, including having been involved with the founding of
both m-net and grex.

I would certainly hate to be on this list:
Laotzu
The Yak
The Silly Hat

It would certainly drop my self esteem a wee little bit. So, Corey, I still
hold respect for you and you mean *more*than*a*yak to me. Remember that,
buddy!

Well, out of the 3 that have responded so far about being willing to volunteer
to be treasurer if necessary, 1 said yes, the other 2 said no (1 perhaps not
strictly seriously). One said he knew what a good treasurer should be/do, and
it wasn't him. Fair enough. But this does suggest that, in absense of the
ability for a non-board member to fulfill the role of treasurer, and knowing
that the current treasurer can't be reelected to the board this time around,
that the primary consideration for this new board (3 remaining members, 4
guaranteed new members) is to identify the next treasurer *FROM AMONG THE
BOARD MEMBERS THEMSELVES*. That further suggests that there better be someone
on/elected to the board that can and will fulfill the role of treasurer.
I'm still not getting enough of a "warm and fuzzy" about that prospect...

Can a non-board-member volunteer to assist with the treasurer's job. (I am
not volunteering, just asking). May I volunteer Katie Geddes?

response 89 of 167: Mark Unseen   Nov 11 19:15 UTC 1999

Kevin: If you are saying the that I wasn't being strictly serious, believe
me, I am. I firmly believe that Grex deserves a much better treasurer that
I could be. Although I will admit that I was treasure of my Jr. Class in high
school, and did a darn good job. And honestly, if it came down to it, I would
do my very best if for some reason I did end up as treasurer. But I just
think that Grex deserves better.

And yes, I know that the board members will decide later. And everything that
I've said is purely hypothetical. :)

I find myself vaguely curious as to the opinions on this subject of the
board members who will be remaining.

response 91 of 167: Mark Unseen   Nov 12 03:28 UTC 1999

Why is the Silly Hat ineligible? It has it's own fund, already in the
treasurer's book. I'm sure that if it needed a membership, the funds
could just be transferred from one line to the other in the book.

response 92 of 167: Mark Unseen   Nov 12 03:44 UTC 1999

I second flem's inquiry: Remaining board members, please weigh in as
to whether you intend to volunteer, if necessary, to be the next grex
treasurer.

I don't know if this is the right item to be discussing future
treasurers.

I've been acting treasurer fairly often. I know how to do most
everything involved, and though I'm not as well-organized as our recent
treasurers, I'm not a total organizational disaster area. My problem
that I'm under pretty massive time pressure, and expect to remain so for
a couple years (though with some breaks from time to time). I have a
hard time getting around to getting things done in a timely matter. I
just got around with checking with my bank about an $8000 check that I
deposited 3 months ago and that didn't get credited to my account. I've
been wanting to buy a car for half a year now, but have only found time
to get to one car dealer to test drive cars. The concept of taking on
more work right now just doesn't click. I simply do not see how I could
do a decent job of it.

OK, a question that may lead to a suggestion: Is there a requirement that
the treasurer be the bookkeeper?

I would like to encourage two other people to become Board candidates -
Jeff Kaplan (kaplan) and Jeffery Corey (coyote). I think they'd both be
very good Board members.

After much thought, I'm going to decline nomination. I'm flattered,
but too much of my life is in chaos right now for me to take on any
additional responsibility.
